think i'm leaning towards black now. lot of people talking about appliance epoxy vs spray paint vs plastic dip. what is the best way to go if i do good prep job to get most long term return.......is one way better for the plastic chrome pieces vs the steel bumpers?? what about doing mirrors and door handles/......might as well go all the way if i am going to do it

thx

Can you show pics of the side emblems you did in plastic dip? Think the plastic dip would work for these? thx!

I'll take pics tomoyo and post.. I dont know how the plastic dip would hold on the front, but I will try it soon enough as the spray paint job on my front grill is chip chip chipping away any ways....

save up for better 'mods'

the cheapest way to go is to buy 2 cans of spray paint. that should last for a year and a half.

easy to touch up

powder coat what you can (door handles, bumper etc), but can't PC plastic - so have to do something diff with trim and such.

stock bumper? I don't know i'd PC it. An ARB on the other hand (or 4x4labs/SROR/IPOR etc...) definitely. I have my SROR bumper and sliders i'm going to get cleaned up and PC'd. Plus do some odds and ends while at it (good guys will toss it in for nada or very cheap). Like wiper arms (FR and RR), door handles, and my rear sliding window frames (spray paint wasn't working for me).

So i'm also looking for something that will stick and last. My prep sucked on my first headlight doors and they chipped the first week.

GL!

Your local hardwear store will carry primer and spray paint specifically for plastics. At Home Depot it is called "fusion" and it works very well in terms of adhering to the plastic surface. Prepping and sanding as you mention is key - as is doing a few coats to build it up evenly. My rear bumper is just rustoleum out of a paint sprayer and it has proven itself to be very durable... ridiculously so in fact.
Hope this helps

If you want to paint your plastic chromed parts that are peeling/etc have the chrome stripped off. I looked up plastic chrome plating companies and had them strip the chrome off. It cost $20.00 for grill and light trims and leaves a perfect bare plastic finsih to paint.

I use plastic primer and paint and it came out great. Sorry no pics, this was on another truck I had.

I used "Plastic Dip" Spray on grill, door handles, trim, fender flares and most of the other chrome pieces. This stuff provides a smooth professional finish and does not chip (it's a little softer than paint). Has lasted a long time and when a few scratches show up, a little mineral spirits on a rag smooths the minor marks

spray-painted my front end. looks good i think. primed and painted satin black.:D

have a part # and where you got it at? Wonder if you painted over it if it would be more resistant to chipping off?

Doug720 - great idea i'm calling some places local to me to see about removing the chrome. So far no luck - doubt it will be 20$ like yours, but seems like the best way to go.

Doug - really like the idea of getting to the plastic and then painting. Should stick WAY better...

finally got in touch w/ someplace local that can do it.

 Minimum charge is 150.00

OUCH - that won't work for me. I'll call a few more places, but was wondering if your place might be able to do more for around that price? It would be worth shipping if they'd do it again.

thanks!!

Sprayed with black hammertone- lasts about a year between touch up and then only a few spots

Now that's a nice, clean looking 60.

I used Cal-Tron Plating to strip my grill.

Spook - yeah It's dead sexy (imagine austin powers voice for full effect), and at a drop of a hat Smky posts up more pics of his truck than trapper50 does of his! That's a lot btw. :flipoff2: AND i never get tired of seeing it looking so shiny and clean... not like mine. :frown:

thx Doug - i'll give them a call and see what they say. appreciate it.

:whoops:I hope this isn't a total hijack to OP.

I gave the plastic a light sanding, which took all of the old paint off. I avoided the chromed areas and masked them off before painting. These parts were painted with black appliance epoxy from a spray can. I know from experience with my FJ40 roll cage that the paint is tough and UV resistant.

This is after I painted but before I removed the masking tape;

I'll attack the Land Cruiser emblem next.

I am just trying to keep hope alive for all the 60's out there that would normally be destined for the crusher and keep my picture count over Trappers- If I can help just one more 60 reach its former glory I will sleep better at night:flipoff2:

Since e've all been yapping about blacking out the truck this week so I figured "why not tonight - can't be that big of a deal"

Well, I can confirm that no, it is not a big deal. It is a piece of cake. I didn't do the door trim & the handles because I didn't want to take my doors apart yet (getting some sound deadener soon - will do it then) nor did I do the mirrors (because I got lazy).

But I did do the grill, headlight enclosures and vents. My rear bumper was done by the P/O.

I used Rustoleum Semi Gloss on top of Rustoleum Plastic Primer. One can of primer and two cans of paint got me one coat of primer (with primer left over) and three coats of paint.

It isn't perfect, but it looks a lot better than the faded chrome. I'm hoping to get the truck repainted in the next year or so and when that happens I'll have pro's knock it out again the right way (you know - with real painting equipment and training in its use vs. me and beer+spraypaint).

That said, I think it looks pretty good. I am going to let it sit in the garage overnight and slip it on in the morning when it is dry and ready.

Not too shabby.... and this is a total cakewalk compared to the spray can marathon that Alaska60 is working on this week...
