I'd generally suggest the same strategy but I believe @Bryanmc had a lot of trouble sourcing an engine that actually looked good when it landed in the shop.
Yeah, it can be the wild west with recyclers. I don't know the criteria he used to pick, but as with everything, some due diligence goes a long way so don't pick from the bottom of the barrel. You can work with the individual recycler for picture, compression, even running engine video before pulling. There are different grades of parts that the recyclers rate themselves to. Most are looking for a no-nonsense transaction as they are generally working with industry and shops and neither side want to waste time. Some will even offer startup warranty.
