Love the thread, especially the last pages specifically on the rebuild of the 2H. A couple of questions please...
1. Noted that you opted not to install a turbo (for now anyway). Reasoning makes sense. I read in another post that your 2H is slow to get up to speed, but am curious how well the 2H holds it's speed on longer hills? Are you in the far right lane with the heavily loaded semi's and your flashers on...or are you reasonably able to keep up with traffic?
2. Including machine work and the parts you had to buy (but not counting your labor) what is your ball-park estimate for the rebuild?
3. How is your fuel consumption now with some more miles on the engine?
Thankyou.
Hey bud, thanks for inquiring. Ok so the 2H is not really that slow to get up to speed. I'd say its all relative. For instance, you can definitely keep up with the take off at a red light. It just doesn't feel that fast. Also getting to highway speed is about a 20 to 25 second affair. By today's standards that is slow. Anyhow, I am more than capable to keep up with traffic, so no worries there. I do not live in a very mountainous area, but i do have a place where I tested the truck for speed keep on a long hill. I am able to maintain 55 in 5th, before I downshift to pick up more speed. I will have to make a video for better understanding. I did not install a turbo because of cost. A whole kit is 2.5 to 3k. I am now trying to build one from scratch. The 2H really opens up with a turbo. I am confident that the engine will last me a good while, especially since i rebuilt it.
I did not do any machining but cleaning and rebuilding the head myself with new valve seals and new precups, as mine were cracked. The head was straight and warp free. I did the deglazing of the cylinders myself with stones i bought at the parts store off the shelf. These stones are chinese made and are s***. It is the only part of the rebuild that i was not satisfied with but after a lengthy honing job, the cylinders looked deglazed and block was ready for assembly. The rebuild kit, which includes all gaskets and bearings and rings and such was around 1300, so not too bad. I did get new lifters and rockers prior as they were needed. Those items on their own were pricey, to the tune of maybe 1500 if i remember well. There is a list of the stuff i bought somewhere in the thread and the costs associated. Bottom line is, for a rebuild kit (no pistons) u are looking at 1300 more or less, provided nothing else is needed.
The fuel consumption was around 16mpg before, and now i got as high as 25 mpg. But I think my average after a couple fill ups is about 21mpg. I am really happy with that.
I hope this helps.
alex.

Great thread, and huge fan of your work! Your thread and photos saved me hours on my rig so thank you! I saw u had trouble getting motor back in, I just finished swapping frames and if I was to pull the engine again I would highly recommend pulling the passenger and driver inner fenders/wheel liner and angle down the front body section that holds the radiator and headlights. I did on my rig and it gives you miles of extra room to maneuver the assembely and get the damn drivers side motor mount in behind the steering box :) bear in mind only downside is if you have a/c, sadly u have to disconnect the condenser :(

P.s. Load leveler saves lives
Cheers!

Nice work!! I only had trouble getting the engine over the front valance, as the lift was maxed and the tail end of it hanging low. I'll be better prepared next time for sure. Hopefully not any time soon. Lol

Ok, so kind of keeping it in the family but a little different. Picked this baby up today. Awesome truck. I love it already.

Wife and I love our '11 4Runner. Was thinking that if work changed and I have to commute then I am looking for a 2nd Gen 4Runner with the 22re for that duty.

Oh yeah the 2nd gen with the 4 cyl. The 3 liter was bad. My pickup has the 22r carbureted and I love it a lot. This new runner is pretty good too

Very nice, looks wel serviced and clean, they were not sold over here. It looks like a 60.

@lovetoski My HJ is fine in the slow lane, you can rev it till it bursts and then go to the next gear until it slows down and lower one gear again and keep on doing that or just use a steady gear where it pulls nicely and does not need insane high amounts of rpm.
Also the tires 32x11.50 r15 dont help at all, with smaller tires it is a lot better, the gap (must use high rpm) from 3 to 4 is annoying.

Uphill with the boat trailer modern cars fly by but most hills eventually go down again.

That really stinks, sorry man. Ultimately if u support the wife in. Her time of need she will support your cruiser decisions later :) trust me I know !

Eeesh. I think I'd have anxiety attacks if I had to move back into the city....but in all seriousness, that can't be an easy decision. Says a lot about you. Wish you the best.

Thanks bud, I wish me luck as well!

You can still hang out in this forum! There will always be 60s out there, if your situation changes. Good for you, for standing by you wife. Trucks are just metal....

Damn that sucks, wish you guys the best and the solace you both need in the future.
Thanks Greg, I know this will work out, I hope so.
