Does anybody like any of the quiet generators like the Honda that doesn't cost what a Honda does? I'm gonna need to get one to use to dry out the lake house and power some tools. No water inside yet but it's gonna be DAMN close. No telling when we'll get power back but the lake has to drain about 2 feet before I can even drive all the way to the house, and that's before whatever increase we get over current levels.

So far I can safely say that I've lost a lawnmower, backpack blower, weedeater, grill, 4 Adirondack chairs, a couple NATO cans of non-ethanol.

Possibly will lose my house propane tank (it's almost empty so I'm assuming it'll float and break free of the flex line), control box for my tankless water heater, and will probably have 5-6" of water in my HVAC.

I'm not complaining because I know I'm lucky to have any of that stuff to begin with, just keeping y'all posted on my experience at the last lake on the Catawba River chain - Lake Wateree, SC.

Trying to load some pics that a neighbor took today when he waded in about a 1/3 mile to check on our houses but MUD ain't liking it. Stay tuned.

I’ve got a little Predator 2000 from Harbor Freight…I guess their answer to the Honda. I can’t complain. I just ran it for 3 days straight to keep 2 fridge/freezers and a full standup freezer going until the power came back on. I kept it in its throttled-down mode to be as quiet as possible and it was barely noticeable 15ft away. It had been sitting in my shed, neglected for 3 yrs, but fired up on the first pull.

It killed me to write that check, but I bought a Honda EU2200i Companion. I looked at all the brands listed in response to my question, and I really liked what I saw, but in the end I realized that I know lots of people with the little Hondas and it might be good to have a compatible unit to link together if ever needed. But damn…$$$$.

You won’t think about the cost 20 years from now when you’re still using it.

About 15 years ago a friend asked me to fix this generator. It sat for awhile and needed a carb clean. When I gave it back to him I told him if he ever wanted to sell it let me know. About two weeks ago he called and asked if I still wanted it, of course I said yes.

I love my Honda generator. I need to convert to run off propane then it will be perfect.

It's the generator equivalent of the Toyota tax.

I have a Westinghouse 2000 smart inverter gen. It's quiet, but struggles when our 24 year old fridge compressor kicks on. I didn't recommend it only because of that reason.

I bought it for the teardrop, and it does great with that. I can run the AC with it, and any other 120v things I'd remotely consider taking along.

My honda gen is one of the best things ever. Dead quiet, trifuel conversion is super easy, and it runs forever on a bbq tank. One of these days I'll convert it to natural gas and the only time I'll need to turn it off is when it needs an oil change, lol.

I can't believe im writing about the looks of a generator, but that reminds me of the old Honda scooters LOL. Edit: which I love to be clear :)

Our area in the Upstate got pounded. Huge trees down all over, one of them sitting on my house waiting on the crane crew. We just got power at 5 PM, out since last Friday morning before we woke. If I never take another cold shower it will be too soon! We have been camp cooking on the porch all week.

While sitting with generator power, fridge on, TV on antenna, no hot water, camp cooking, we had a lot of time to sit and talk. One thing that came to mind is that in ten years in Key West and many hurricanes the longest I went without power was 5 days. This time around, far inland we are without power 7.5 days. Odd. But a few items came into play. First and foremost the Keys are built for it, not here. In fact I have been told in the past that my area has one of the oldest, worst condition grids in the Carolinas. The other came up when we were driving somewhere and Heather says "You know the linemen coming in from all over have to think the electric companies around here are idiots. There are wires running through trees all over the place, before the storm" It just seemed odd that we would go that long.

I'll be figuring out a better back up generator system soon. I've actually been thinking about it lately, prior to the storm. There is the Generac route. Numbers I have heard are around $20K all in. Another rout I am considering is a used work site light system. Basically a diesel generator on a trailer with a light tower. Not all that interested in the light so much as the 110 and 220 outputs. Wire the appropriate cut offs to the main gris and proper box and run a cord from the generator to the house input. Food for thought.

check the gov planet website for auctions on old diesel generators. You’d likely be able to get a trailer there too if you wanted.

The units I am talking about come with the trailer. Likely all I will need to change out at first is the hitch.

We went with Canter Power Systems for our current house and at the last one. They do it all for you, which is nice, but the trade off is the cost. I have gone from do it all myself to "let them handle it."

Total cost from Canter for a 22Kw system was 13K.

Gas company did our natural gas line from road to house for free, that was the tipping point.

Our grid here on the EAST side of main street is bad - constant outages.

Previously we had the Honda EU7000is twice - amazing generator I just got tired of hauling it out and setting up the grid of extension cords that went through the house - like 12.

The United States sent millions if not billions to Ukraine the moment Russia invaded. Who knows how much since. Same applies to Israel. The Southeast has just gone through the most destructive hurricane since Katrina. I can all but guarantee our government has not sent 1/100 of that to this area. I've seen no other reports of foreign governments sending any aide at all to the US. I think that it is about time that we, the citizens demand our government stop taking care of the world and start taking care of things here at home. How many times have we seen our people as boots on the ground around the world when tragedy strikes. Why has the National Guard not flooded areas hard hit here at home? There are more private agencies operating in NC and SC than our own government.

We fought the Revolutionary war over taxation without representation. I've paid a hell of a lot in taxes over my life span, yet getting assistance here at home is like pulling teeth. We as tax paying citizens are the only ones that will ever effect change in our government. We the people (peasants) are the ones that pay the price for all of it.

Just something to ponder while sitting back enjoying a latte.

You want to go further down the rabbit hole?

How long do you think it took our global response to be wheels up after the order came down to mobilize after the Haiti earthquake?

10 hrs. Ten. Hours.

Our country's credit card is maxed. We have no plan for social security after 2036 other than to cut it by 30%+.

We are funding a country that is committing nearly terrorist attacks on terrorists and another that has decided to use our resources to pick a fight with mother Russia.

We can be sure of inflation averages in the 4-5%+ range to "buy" our way out of some of this mess. No way around it we have to print more money to help deflate the debt.

And both candidates have plans to increase the debt through deficits during their terms:+: $1-2T for Harris and $5-7T for Trump

I can tell you this. I am sure glad I am 64 and not 24. Can't imagine the future here if we continue on the path we are on.

At 52, my future is my own. Wish the powers that vote themselves a raise would have given me a heads up. I know, unrealistic expectations abound in my world.
