Pretty amazing and sad documentation of one man's trip through the storm - from his perspective.

@fordoford How are you managing in Boone?
Missed this until now. Thanks for checking in - I actually moved back to Charlotte a couple months ago, but I made my way up to Avery county to help out for a few days and it was real bad. Ran into @erymer at Banner Elk town hall

It was great seeing you too man. Thanks for all you're doing to support he locals up there. Hopefully we can catch up at an event and share some stories.

Spent the day in Minneapolis yesterday. Just really hard to put into words what these smaller communities are going through.

Down at Cape Hatteras this weekend. Had the truck pull a no-start no click on me in the lighthouse parking lot.

I remember what @Hokie LX told me about these plastic tube connector links running from the battery and how they can cause start amperage issues. I got the truck running again with a positive terminal disconnect and reconnect. I then went to the Napa here and got some electronic cleaner and terminal protector.

The links or whatever they’re called were a little grimy so it was good to clean those out. Fingers crossed that’s all it is on my FJ62 and we don’t get stranded on the sand tomorrow.

Well, I spoke too soon. More no start no clicks. Any ideas? Seems like the battery connection is intermittent but it charges ok and when I reseat the terminal, it starts right up.

Smack the starter??

That might be worth doing. A few taps and reseating the cables gets it moving. Think it’s the starter going out? It seems to engage out once it has juice.
I would clean the battery terminals as well.

If you look at the wires connected to the terminals….that blu-ish/green corrosion could be part of it. I had a 4Runner with similar symptoms a long time ago and it ended up being the copper wire corrosion at the end of the cables. I took a wire brush and cleaned it as much as possible. Hopefully it is something that simple.

I did just clean off each terminal disconnected to be sure. That blue goop is the terminal protector I sprayed on

For S&G's I'd disassemble the two hold down bolts on the terminal connector and just inspect the backside of the hold down. I've had it look "ok" from that angle but have enough corrosion on the underside to keep it from starting.

When you get home, maybe go at it with some baking soda solution and a wire brush on a drill. Knock that stuff down!

Confirm the baking soda idea before execution though.

Ive HEARD a trick to keep corrosion from terminals is a very light coating of oil.
Ive done it, not had any corrosion...but that doesnt mean it's for sure the reason why

OH! And Hi!
Ive not been on in a long time
Kind of left the 62
Ive been accumulating parts to fix it's mechanical issues
Ive hit a point where I just dont have the time, I'll have to pay someone to install the parts

Life got busy
I just left my job, and career, of ten years as a public educator and starting a new position on Tuesday.
Still have my 19 Rav4
Still have the 91 turbo MR2 that I spent the summer improving with Willwood big brake kit and other things
Picked up another mr2 turbo parts car, too.

Honestly, Helene made me interested in this truck again
I thought Id like to have something I could drive up to help
Instead I just donated goods
But this truck needs love, it's coming.

Made it back to Raleigh with no further starting issues. I'll disassemble those terminals this week for a deep clean. Thanks all for the help!
You should also pick up a denso starter rebuild kit (contacts and plunger), (plenty of rebuild videos on the youtubes), and a Painless Performance Hot Shot starting relay kit. The relay kit has 4 wires. Red 12v +, black 12v - at the battery. The two purple wires get spliced into the smaller on the starter. Small purple- dash side of ignition feed, larger purple as close to the starter as possible. When you hit the ignition switch, the relay supplies up to 40 amps to engage the starter.

That sounds like a worth while upgrade. Thanks for recommending it.

I've done it to every toyota I've owned in the last 25 years. Well worth the time and effort.

Anyone in the UTV world? One of the issues i had with the 80 was available wheeling locally. Im thinking about picking up a sport SxS and curious from people that own them. There seem to be a lot more options for the utv crowd around.
Bumping this back up. Any new owners locally? I’m going to be making the plunge soon.
