If you want lightweight strength, build it out of aluminum, not wood. You could bolt the aluminum 1" bar together with brackets instead of welding, and it'll still be lightweight.

Edit again, this is made out of steel, but it's still very light. Skinned with 3/4" plywood the weight is tripled and it's still light enough to move and install by myself.

Be aware that SYP (southern yellow pine) spans changed in 2014. The high growth rate of current pine plantations resulted in much wider annual growth rings and therefore weaker boards. Not widely publicized but was a major issue for the US South lumber business a few years back

THanks!
First choice is USC he auditioned there last weekend. Has an acceptance letter to UNCG and App and it contemplating going to one of those for the cheapness of it, and then go for a graduate degree at USC or Vandy. That said after seeing how much amazing exposure and experience his sister is getting at Vandy he's definitely considering spending the money.

James, how did your son's audition go at Vandy? Meant to tell you congrats on already getting acceptance letters...that's huge to already have options!
Our daughter had a great one at Clemson and like you mentioned, is leaning towards going in state and maybe out of state if further schooling presents itself as an opportunity! It was a very good sign that she was asked after her first audition/interview to participate in a further interview with different professors, as, from what i could tell sitting in the common area with all the other parents, no one else did that. The Sr. that gave she and I a private tour of their facilities was from Nashville....she already has offers from Carnegie Mellon and UNLV for graduate studies! We were told we would know something by the end of next month.....

Didn't get to sit in for the audition but he said it was 'pretty good'. Found out from my daughter that they brought 5 bassoonists to audition and they're choosing 2. My daughter told me (not her brother) that because my son arranged last year to have a personal lesson with the bassoon professor when he was visiting his sister, hes already well liked.

We'll see though. Very cool about your daughter! Jake will know by the end of march.

I wonder how expensive the rear driver side glass would be for a four door 'binder pickup?

It's flat glass so not much. Still trying to figure out the best way to make an easily set up "fence" for the sides. I would prefer not to be redneck and have the old 5gal bucket filled with concrete as a base, but I can't think of anything else.

Thought about having some black iron pipe that installs quickly to those screw-in bases already pre-mounted on the wall. But that would probably be too heavy.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Well you should at least roll that mutha down, man!

You could fab up some frames for side fences and have them hinged onto the board. They would fold on top for transport. My $ .02 FWIW.

Yeah, no parents allowed for any auditions/interviews! A huge plus for Jake already knowing one of the professors!

I was the only one that threw at the target on the truck. I'm not bragging but I'm kind of an axpert.

It's already heavy as is, looking into adding gas strut to help open/close. Would like something that can fit inside the bed and attach to it.

You could use hinges with pull pins. Pull the pins and put the side panels in the bed.

Didn't think of that. We're doing that lower section of wall (that covers the wheel) with a pull pin hinge. So I can remove the lower section and just drive around with a wooden bed cover to be "stealth"

iPhone and Chromebook help needed:

I've got two great girls, 4th and 7th grades. The 7th grader has an iPhone with cell service while her little sister has an iPhone that effectively works as a iPod. Neither can add apps on their phone without bringing it to us to input a password and the phone's restrictions are set to allow PG and below movies, music and websites. We do not currently allow any social media apps or Snapchat. We review text messages and website history occasionally to ensure they are not sending or receiving inappropriate texts or going to websites they shouldn't. The 7th grader has email and I check the account periodically as well.

They received a Chromebook for Christmas primarily for homework. I set it up with their student profiles and profiles for their gmail accounts.

I'm sure there is more we can do to protect them from the less than savory parts of the internet, internet bullying, temptation in general but I'm unaware of what all is available.

What others in the club with young kids are doing to protect their kids? Post up or PM me if you have "built a better mousetrap."

Im interested in to see what everyone is using as well the majority of my business is with large corporate accounts who have IT that limits what can cannot be installed on a company phone as well as blocking access to certain apps and functions but I am curious as to what someone with out the long arm of an IT budget is using because we do cater to smaller businesses and startups as well.

Thankful my daughters are 23 and 17 and we are in the "Facilitating Independence" stage with the youngest and trusting her to make good decisions unless she proves otherwise and thankfully she hasn't!....we have her passwords and she has ours so she can grab my phone anytime and can look at anything like i can with hers. We also have an app called "Life 360" that shows where everyone is....my 74 year old mother also has it on her phone and can see wherever i am so i always get calls or texts if i have left Greenville!

I have no direct experience with Chromebook. You might search "MDM services". Typically corporations use these Mobile Device Management services for managing permissible content on office devices and folks who BYOD. There may be options at the consumer level and from my initial search, Chromebook may have some of this built into the OS already.

Blackout curtains. Best money spent on my house ever. Only took Sarah 8 years here to come around to the dark side. I used to have amazing dreams about sleeping through the night that became tortuous nightmares mocking me when I would inevitably wake to find almost enough light to read by streaming through the old, almost invisibly clear, curtains at 3am. I can't say I'm sleeping any longer but I sure as hell sleep better, and I feel so much better for the last couple weeks since I got them.
