Just starting the cook. Temps are closer than usual.

I guess I just wasn't expecting there to be much of a difference... But the BGE had been doing fine until now. Maybe I was just getting lucky. :). Pork Butt turned out amazing as always. ABT's will result in us doing the Cowboy walk for a few days... But totally worth it! Thanks for the help!

I moved my sensor for tonight's cook. It is usually in the draft from the place-setter. Tonight it was blocked by the place-setter. I usually see ~ 50F difference if cooking at 300-325. Stayed at 275-278 tonight.

I don't understand why you would put it in the draft in the first place. That's not where your food is cooking. Seems to me to be like taking your temperature on top of your head - it might be near to your mouth but it's never gonna be correct. I actually wish the Egg probe was a little longer to put it more in the cook chamber area and less in the draft. I made sure to orient a leg of the Place Setter in line with the probe, just in case. School me if I'm wrong.

Not wrong ... I'll take a pic tomorrow to clarify, but my remote probe clips to the grid grate. I hate tended to have the probe at the edge of the grate and with it not blocked by one of the three legs of the place setter. This last cook, I moved it to be over one of the legs and the difference was much less.

The egg probe is a compromise, but I would not want it Andy longer. The last two turkeys I have smoked barely cleared the probe on the lid ....

On edit: iPad spell check sometimes makes my typing look like meatstick's ;)

Is that available to buy?
X2!

Edit: Apparently the guy that created the FJ40 is going to post the plans for free some time this month. Hopefully he'll tell us which Lego kit contains each of the unique pieces...

That's the coolest thing I've seen all day.

I was lucky enough many years ago to meet and become friends with a kind old man and a legend in the NASCAR racing community named Ben Barnes. Ben was the engine builder for the likes of Tommy Houston, Harry Gant, and Jack Ingram (just inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame) just to name a few. To step into Ben's office is a head spinning trip into years of racing history; the 1970's era pine paneling covered with pictures of greats from the past.

Early after us meeting, Ben and I discovered we had the same birthday, so I made a habit of calling him each year on Jan 20th to catch up and wish him a happy birthday.

This year I opted to play hookie from work to take the 40 for a ride to Asheville; back to her roots. I called Ben and told him I was on my way and wanted to take him to lunch. He turned 72 this year and still refuses to retire, arguing he's having too much fun to call it quits. For his birthday I took a framed photo of the 40, taken shortly after finishing the frame off, and with the 383 he machined for me under the hood.

It wasn't the first time Ben had seen a 40 but it was the first time he'd seen one with one of his engines. The look on his face; priceless. So now there is a photo of a Japanese truck hanging on Ben's wall among a sea of old school racing history. I'm quite sure it isn't the picture he is the proudest of, but he did hang it with pride.

It was a good day.
