ready to go

I made a little rack to hold the axle while working on it, and transporting it to the knowledge center of the world. Also TLCA headquarters.

Took apart the axle locks, and painted. Only problem is I think I lost the ball bearing or something that holds it in place. See last pic of the spring that I found on the floor, but I have a feeling I am missing a ball bearing or a short rod or something. It would go on the side of the Red center selector. Anyone know what I should be looking for? If anything? I am hoping it is metal so I can find it with a magnet.

THanks,

Yes, but I lost my balls!

Well, at least they are steel balls

Make sure you replace that o-ring at the same time. Probaby any smallish ballbearing or BB will work depending on size.. that is a detent ball.. If you can compare it to the size of a shot shell # I could probably cut open a shell and get something.

YOur going all out.. I'll have bench ready. Gotta find out what size batteries my calipers take.

Good idea on the shot for a ball bearing.

I found one of them after a half hour crawling around, so I can size the other one. I do have a set of 6" digital calipers from harbor freight. Worked pretty good.

I have a way of doing too much.... can't stand to half (buttocks) a project.

Oh, on the o-ring. Mine came out as a flat O-ring that was angled, seemed pretty specific. Have you had luck using an standard o-ring?

Can't remember the size of the calipers but pretty sure i've got 12".. I'll look tonight. I got em just for knuckle jobs because to measure the shim stack you have to go all the way from top to bottom of caliper. Look at manual and you'll see what i mean.

YOu ever get those birfs off the inner shafts? and if so did you test fit them into the bell on the axle? they won't fit. We can grind at my place or you can pre-grind now. On flats of bell on axle.
you can also put your rotors on the wheel bearing assembly.

No, I could not find a short piece of steel tube. I hated to shorten my cheater bar. On the grinding, I will see if I can see a picture on guppy's writeup. If I see a picture, I usually can do it.

Thanks, and see you monday. As Yoda would say, "excited, I am."

call me if you have any last minute questions. i'm working the other job sat but around.
I can probably find what your missing in the garage. Might have to move some stuff but it's all in there somewhere.

grinding

So, it appears that I need to grind the housing, to accept the larger axles, top and bottom. I will take a stab at it.

picture is from 1973Guppy writeup on FAQ.

yep, best accomplished with a birf that has no inner shaft attached. we can do here if you have trouble removing inner shaft from birf. just stuff a rag in the inner axle hole, grind top and bottom to fit when it goes in past the flats, birf oriented top and bottom flats with top and bottom flats on housing your golden.
i have spare birfs here if you need

I just had to do that on my 40 so I could fit longfields in it. Pretty easy.

Well, having technical difficulty with the camera: however, I was too excited to post up the progress over the long weekend, so you will have to read instead of slober over your keyboard with the eye candy.

Erik opened his shop up for the axle rebuild (and his parts boxes) and we were able to get the entire axle built up. It looks awesome, and it is also done right!

First, Erik has the SST, that precisely determines the shims needed to center the axle and keep your seals intact.

Second, Erik has the original factory service manual to describe exactly how to do the work.

Finally, Erik has the knowledge in his noggin' to know what do to do, and what not to do, to make this rebuild last!

So, this 1975 axle with Mini truck fine spline birfs is ready for the transplant into the 1968. Hopefully, I can get it swapped in soon. I need to order the tapered things for the tie rod ends, and a bunch of parts to replace all that we used from Erik's boxes.

Thanks Erik for your time and expertise, and mostly for teaching, not doing the work. As you said, I should be able to help others now after having done it.

Also, thanks to Jenn for putting up with all the noise on your day off!

Cheers!

Actually the SST is owned by Cheffy, just housed at my place.. I tend to use it a bit more than he does and i'm pretty sure he's possibly forgotten i even have it. I'll have to remind him when i have him captive for 16 hours in the truck next month.

It was a pleasure. Lots of projects goin on at the same time.. couple other buddies were over fixing lights and other stuff on an 85 mini. Most everything got done except figuring out the horn on the mini.

Kelly did look like he was working on a chain gang after getting done with the axle. grabbed a sledge and hammered out a section of the floor in the basement.

Erik-
Trying to order parts that we used from your inventory....

Where do you buy the top and bottom bearings with races?

Outer seals around birf?

Inner seal?

Pinion seal? (I think I got my last from SOR)

Another question, before I put the old driveline in (3 speed), and I don't know if it is leaking or not (tranny/transfer) is there anything you would do to it? Any easy seals to replace that are typically bad or cleanup to do.

I recall when I pulled the fluid out of the tranny, it was really thick... and black as night.

technoligically superior

I won the battle with the camera
