Are you still wanting to use the parts washer tomorrow (fri)? Give me a shout in the morning if you are.

Finally got out to MOfj40's shop and cleaned up parts. Thanks A! I will load you up on beer next time I see ya. Hope you have a good size frigerator!

Oh yeah, guess what part Marlin was backordered on... double lip seals. the one part I really needed from them! Oh well, no hurry right?

no hurry from me. i'm working on a secret project acquisition right now and will spill details after $ has changed hands. did get some slatwall hung in garage. more organization to come. take your time. longer we wait more organized the shop will be here. and refinancing the house.

progress report:

parts from mini- all cleaned up. Need to weld split on disk brake backing plate, and get ready for paint (or powder)

new old fj axle from 75 fj. Sandblasted, ground down old welds, cleaned up and rewelded nasty a** welds on spring hangers. Tore off drum brakes and hoses.

Question: Do I need to clean up the axles from the FJ axle? I was assuing we use part of this, but hate to assume too much.

Also, should I move the hard to soft brake line connection? If so, I would like to do it before I por15 the axle.

Eye candy to come....

Thanks,

Question-

Should the calipers that I have be for a 85 ish landcruiser too such that they work with the wider vented rotors?

If I look online at ROCK, they are a different part number from a minitruck...

minitruck calipers are narrower for non vented rotor.. landcruiser, minitruck ifs etc are wider and fit vented rotor. that answer one question..

"Question: Do I need to clean up the axles from the FJ axle? I was assuing we use part of this, but hate to assume too much. "

Huh? We're gonna use the housing itself only. Nothing from the old knuckle out. Take a picture of what your asking.

"Also, should I move the hard to soft brake line connection? If so, I would like to do it before I por15 the axle."
REmove? or leave it there? is that your question? Ok.. we gotta figure out if your using backing plates. sounds like you are, then we need to determine if we have a splitter on them or not.. For now leave that little tab on there.

ok erik, let me try to answer one, ask two. On my axle question, I meant do I need to clean up the birfs and the actual "inners" from the 75 Fj. I thought they were different lengths.

Question on brakes, I found this recent link about what brakes to use. Maybe all these different calipers work, but what I have is part number 19-826, the ones referenced above are 19-601. I need another set for my other project, so wanted to get the best ones. With the current discount at Advance, these are about $30 bucks each. It was mentioned in the link they have large pistons. Anyway, cheapest price I have seen, and wanted to jump on it.

https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/389502-brake-caliper.html

the latter number 19-1601 are for:

TOYOTA 4RUNNER SR5 (1991 - 1995)
TOYOTA T100 (1993 - 1998)
TOYOTA T100 DLX 1995
TOYOTA T100 DLX EXC 1995
TOYOTA T100 SR5 (1993 - 1997)

Second question, did you ever tell me what master cylinder I needed to get to use your adapter plate?

what's 19-826 fit? if the answer is any IFS toyota 4wd pickup of the above vintage or earlier to 1986 then yes that will be fine.

Clean up the birfs from the minitruck. Remove the birfs from the inners by slamming them down on a piece of schedule 40 pipe in a vice.. watch your toes.
Remove inner axle shaft from FJ40 1975 birfs same procedure. We'll be using Minitruck Birf and FJ40 inner axles.

Master cylinder. Ok. What do you have now? if stock 1975 master that's fine we'll just stay with it. otherwise I recommend fj80 or T100 master. but lets worry bout that later. right now use the master that's on there we'll remove the residual valve and call it good.

Don't worry bout a master cylinder right now.. lets just get your axle built for starters..

1986-1989 4runner caliper is what you apprently have.. Fine works great.. What we used for YEARS before these new fangled newer trucks came out. :)

Very good, and very close.

I will post up when I get the axle painted up pretty like.

FYI the 19-826 is for the following:

TOYOTA 4RUNNER DLX (1986 - 1989)
TOYOTA 4RUNNER SR5 (1986 - 1989)
TOYOTA LAND CRUISER (1976 - 1990)
TOYOTA LAND CRUISER BJ42 (1981 - 1984)
TOYOTA LAND CRUISER BJ60 (1981 - 1985)
TOYOTA LAND CRUISER BJ60LG-MK (1984 - 1985)
TOYOTA LAND CRUISER BJ60LV-KK 1981
TOYOTA LAND CRUISER BJ70 (1985 - 1987)
TOYOTA LAND CRUISER HJ60 (1986 - 1987)
TOYOTA PICKUP (1986 - 1988)
TOYOTA PICKUP DLX (1986 - 1988)

TOYOTA PICKUP LN67 1987
TOYOTA PICKUP LN76 1986
TOYOTA PICKUP RN63 (1986 - 1987)
TOYOTA PICKUP SR5 (1986 - 1988)

the 19-1240 are for:

TOYOTA 4RUNNER DLX 1989
TOYOTA 4RUNNER SR5 (1988 - 1991)
TOYOTA PICKUP (1988 - 1995)
TOYOTA PICKUP DLX (1988 - 1995)
TOYOTA PICKUP RN02 1993
TOYOTA PICKUP SHT BD DLX EXC (1991 - 1992)
TOYOTA PICKUP SR5 (1988 - 1995)

NO IDEA what the difference are.....

FYI - I don't have a master now, unless you count the brand new single for a 67' that I put in before you convinced me to be safe.

I will look for a t100 master.

I was able to pop the birfs off of the axles on both of the longer axles, but could not get the other ones to come off (short axle side). Any tricks? I beat the heck out of them.

I used a 2"PVC pipe, that was cut square on both sides, and slid it down the axle, held on to the axle exposed and used a 5 lb sledge to beat on the other end of the pvc.

Your holding onto the wrong part.. Lock that tube into the vice.. Hold onto the Birfield itself. Let gravity be your friend, lower the inner axle in the tube quickly it will bottom out on the inner race of the cage of balls. Once hitting that inner race the momentum of the inner axle shaft will continue towards the floor. the inner axle shaft will continue towards the floor until it contacts either the floor or your foot which ever is closest. this will leave you holding a birfield in your hand shaking your head.. You'll be shaking your head either in pain due to the foot or amazement..

Clean out the birf, there may or may not be pieces of the inner axle snap ring. check the inner axle for remants of the snap ring. sometimes they remain in one piece and play nicely sometimes they do not.

I have a few masters lying round the house if you wanna start there.. Free to you. Rob's picking up a booster today at my office.. so I know I saw 2-3 masters down there. dunno how good they are but we'll find out.

YOu going to rear disks later? the t100 and Fj80 masters like marlin has are a good option if you wanna just keep it simple. Or ebay is your friend. I think my last 2 t100 masters were like $30 or so and they're alum not steel so inner seal issues are not the same.

if you don't wanna lock that tube due to it being pvc.. open the vice up or grab a spare receiver hitch that's hollow thru and lock it in the vice.. or just use the vice jaws with room open towards the floor.

If you can't get em to seperate don't worry.. I will..

Thanks for all your help and insight.

I will try again on the birfs with your instructions. I have some steel pipe too, for some reason I thought you said pvc. My bad.

I don't plan on changing the rear to disk on this FJ.

I will hold off on the master..... Thanks.

By the way, you might want to get an extra frig for all the beer I'm gonna need to bring you.

Speaking of, I am getting ready to brew up a batch of the "black" beer that I brought to the meeting. It won't be ready when we do this, but would you prefer that I bottle up some for you, or just bring a small keg out to your place sometime?

Don't you have an FJ80 master sitting around?.......

The 3fe project has one on it, but I am trying not to rob peter to pay paul. The 3fe project will start rolling at some point.... ADHD boy here.

Did you think that there was an extra master? Guess I will have to look again. I thought I had the parts sorted and organized finally.

Hey Erik-

Any public information on your secret project? On the edge of my seat.....

k

Picking up the project the 7th of August in Colorado.
Will gain me 3+ inches of legroom, and a removable top. Since I sold the 40 i miss a removable top. It also will give me the ability to complete the cab then bring the 45 home.
