Figured it polite to move my wheel cleaning away from the "what did you do for your 4x4" as to avoid tribulations.
A series of progress on a wheel.
How it started.

1st pass hitting the easy to clean area using a wire brush in a cordless drill. Looks promising.

A second pass focused more on the back face and the tight corner area.

Last pass in the tight spots again.

Ran out of wire wheel.

Use a scotch bright pad and some clr

I tried the steel wool with CLR. It didn't seem to work that well. Some of the rust is kinda bad. I'll give it another try.

Steel wool was not working well at all. I did pick up more wire wheels of different sizes. I thought I would try something like this as well.

Knocks of the big stuff quickly. Can't get into the corners very well at all. I didn't use any CLR. I wish I had a tub and something to slowly rotate the wheel partly submerged in CLR.

Do we know of anyone that has gone down this path before?

I dont think Mr toyota really focused on the back of the wheels in the 80's. Might try that evaporust stuff? Naval jelly? Your dealing with 40 year old wheels. De tray plating in Independence could rechrome them but probably not at a great price point. Always wanted to have a set dechromed and painted off white.
