I ordered the baofeng uv-82 after reading reviews, with an hr-660 antenna. There's a specific PTT microphone (dual input) for the UV-82 and a car charger.

CB is still a good idea, I will bring mine too.

Rice, is that for simplex device to device? I think I get what you mean, the radio will ignore all other calls unless the carrier has the CTCSS of 100 at that frequency.

I found the repeater info for Uwharrie below. I don't have my radio yet, will figure out how to program all this stuff.

Ooh, I missed that repeater thanks. I will dig up the specs on it and post here.

Yes, our 146.460 Mhz is simplex.

The repeater I listed has a -600kHz offset ... that is to say you will recieve on the listed frequency and transmit 600kHz below that. Correct .... unless your radio sends a 100 Hz tone the repeater will ignore you. The very first time you program this into your Baofeng will make you nuts .... programming into Baofeng memory without a computer link cord is the single worst thing about the unit. But once in memory it's done.

You are correct, Izzy. The repeater you listed is closer than the one I listed.

In case of emergency I would suggest tuning to the 2-meter station since it will have more traffic:

Uwharrie Repeater: KI4DH 147.090 MHz (Offset +600kHz) with a 100 tone.

Rice,
I understood the repeater business fine (had to for the test), but thought you were referring to doing this below for the LR participants, using tone to identify the group members in the same frequency. I didn't know it was an option without repeater.

Got my vafangool! Got to love Lasership

I've got the 147.090 MHz repeater programmed into my mobile unit and will likely use it on the way in on Friday evening for any ONSC HAM's that are listening (since the range is ~60 miles), but otherwise I believe all our club/trail communications will be simplex 146.460 MHz unless Johnny wishes to modify that.

Just checked in at FCC KM4WOW, I might keep that call sign.

That is a great call sign :)

I have been using my Bafangool UV-82, and it has been easy to program with Chirp and the cable, piece of cake. But also heeding the thoughts from many here like SeanLX and others elsewhere about having a more bulletproof radio. I have been spending millions of hours reading articles in mags and on-line and looks like Yaesu is a great next step. Even though I know Japanese stuff is crap.

So looking at a Yaesu vx-6r and ft-60r as potential new radios. Still sticking to handhelds, so I can still use them when not in the truck. Anyone has these or other recommended higher end ones? Have read a good bit about Kenwood and Icom, and alpicas or whatever the other brand is. Yaesu yessir, is my current bent. No pun intended.

That's cool. With all those accessories it's really not that much more expensive.

I would like to pick up a handheld that's submersible.

Got my goodies, I really like this radio, easy to program with computer too. What it doesn't do is transmit on FRS, which my Baofeng do, it can only receive FRS, and there's a mod for that with a soldering iron. Other than that, it's awesome. Ordered the car antenna adapter too.

I have the same program for both radios, so tested them by hitting the Mount Mitchell repeater from my home. The Yaesu hits it and I can hear it clearly on the Baofeng. The Baofeng can not reach to transmit. Non scientific test, but impressive!

Guys, found the repeater book in Apple App Store, gets repeaters close to your location. This may be old news but I just found it.

Got the bits to connect the car antenna to the Yaesu, and that little radio can hit the Uwharrie repeater (50 air miles) from my home! Thats impressive, comes loud and clear.

Hit a question for you savvy people. I went to my first HAM club meeting yesterday, wanted to see what it was like, since it seems to be recommended time and again as a way to learn more about using the radio. How many of you gents belong to a local club? I am on the fence on this. Thanks in advance.

After listening to, and participating in, several ragchew nets I decided to attend a local meeting as well. Nice folks and all but came away with an overwhelming amount of "Eh". Didn't go back.
