$28 ? where? I put the cheaper 5 version on my wish list for the kids to get me...should be enough to get me rolling, but not likely weak enough to keep me from having to listen to IZZYs jabbering...lol or is it a waste of money?

Price went up, I paid $28, now skyrocketed to $29.95. It's a hobby, like anything else, try it cheaply, and if you enjoy it, go bigger.

For example, during our last storm, I was on the skywarn net, listening to the live reports of tornados seen on the ground by spotters and where. TV was very late reporting anything. Wife was impressed enough that my radio "capital acquisition request and release form" was approved by management. Buying some liquid electrical tape today to seal antenna cables....

Non-ham question...,I had considered getting a ham and taking the test etc....I just don't have the time right now...so maybe later. So my question is.....do the rallies at URE etc require some type of communication? If so I will just grab a CB and antenna until I get the Ham stuff figured out.

If anyone has converted to Ham and has a CB that they would like to sell please let me know!

I've never heard of communication being required enough to turn anyone away at any ride in Uwharrie.

A CB is on the "evaluated items" list for ONSC events so that's the official communication method. Lots/most of us that have ham radios still keep the CB to be able to talk to everyone else. I've seen FRS's used a lot too.

It's not the cheapest option out there but I've had really good luck with this CB...

None needed, but highly recommended as cell access is very limited. FRS is used by many, CB by some. The Midland CB works okay.

You have to have a frs as a minimum, for Logan's run.

This is what I have. It's nice but the rubber ducky antennae needs to be replaced with something nicer. HAM is leaps and bounds better and cheaper.

Family Radio Service. It's the little walkie talkies you see in Walmart, Cabellas, etc. The often also have GMRS built in.

They work well if you're right in front of or behind the person but if you get spread out then you're out of range pretty quickly.

CB's have better range. Not much better if it's a handheld but pretty good if you have an antenna on top of a metal roof. That's why I like that Midland, it works either way.

Ham's have the range. The 2 meter band is 2-5 miles (handheld) or 30-50 miles (mobile with antenna) or even farther if you get into a repeater.

Ah gotcha. FRS.....I will just do a CB for now. Thanks for the info guys!

Before jumping on the CB consider a couple thoughts .... HAM requires a license to transmit only so if you were okay with just listening anyone can. Exception to needing a license is in the event of an emergency.

2nd .... studying for and taking the tech license is remarkably fast/easy. So before you know it you will be up&runnin.

That is a good point. I probably wouldn't be talking on the CB much but a HAM would be better on a solo journey....and I can always listen until I get a license. Decisions.

Are you an engineer, physicist, actuary, programmer, accountant or any other profession where there is a reasonable assumption your glasses will be held together with tape on the bridge?

If you answered yes, go HAM.

I don't like that, next time I see you will not give you this pocket protector that I just got you!
I got my power supply today, so hooked up the TH-9800 and used the "mobile antenna on a cookie sheet by the window" trick, programmed the unit with my new Dell 8900 desktop (don't say anything Jim) and voila, it works.

I can send and receive CB, tested it with a sourly teenager and I could make out the complaints on my end. I know, I know, its not an amplitude modulator so it doesnt work, but hey, I could make out what he was saying and he could hear me, how about that?

This is the Boy Scout material for their radio badge, easy to review and take the test:

So, what's your callsign? :flipoff2:

His call sign would be "broken on the side of the road again, and again", but that would be mean so I won't say it.
