As I mentioned earlier, it is possible that you have other issues that may have contributed to the short service life. Since this is the downstream sensor it could possibly be a catalyst inefficiency or fuel mixture imbalance. Both of these being wild-ass guesses on my part.
 
I upkeep my rig pretty religiously. I do have the wits end turbo installed & run premium fuel because of it. But my timing is stock & about everything else. My injectors were serviced & mapped a few years back, so they shouldn’t be an issue.
 
Weird that they both threw the code simultaneously. I’ve cleared the codes with my scan gauge2, and both come back at the same time.
 
What cats are you running?
 
Cat or cats? It had 2 (one behind the other) to begin with.
 
My exhaust is totally stock, with the exception being the down pipe from the engine that was supplied with my turbo kit.

I built a “cage” around my cats when I designed my custom rock guards/side steps.
 
There is s possibility that one or both of your cats could be shot. Especially considering the mileage and the fact that you are now running forced induction. The 95-97 uses a three-way catalyst system as opposed to the earlier two- way. As a result it is much more finicky about cat performance.
 
On older vehicles (back in the day) the only way to get three-way performance was to use multiple cats inline. Modern cats are more flexible than before and you can likely find a single cat that can perform the job correctly.
 
I do believe the cats are important for the environment & intend to keep them.

Not only that, but are required in CA, for Smog.

That being said, my rig isn’t smog-legal due to Joey Romero (Wits End) never following up on the process/promise of getting his turbo kit smog legal.
But there are plenty-o threads bashing Joey right now, I don’t want this to morph into another.

I’d assume you’d suggest replacing the O2 sensors first, then if the problem persists, look at a possible cat issue?

I don’t know of a way to test the cat efficiency besides just throwing a new one on the rig?
 
If the trouble codes suggest cat inefficiency I would start with the sensors. If it persists the next step would be to replace the cats.
In view of the mileage, age, and now the forced induction, I would be surprised if the current cats are up to the job.

That being said, this is just my take on it.

Does the cruiser have a specific cat fault code? I’m just getting the po130 & po133 codes, which are specific to the 2 O2 sensors.
 
it's tough to be explicit/faultless with a diagnosis from a keyboard. your predicament with replacement OEM sensor(s) albeit Denso) vs non-Toyota specific Denso sensors perhaps "not lasting as long" is reasonably moot since OEM is no longer available.

a well maintained engine with 247,xxx miles on it is still subjected to a variety of "wear and tear" issues that could and will lead to o2 sensors failing, not to mention driving habits. your engine at 247,xxx miles on it could be experiencing blow by, improperly seating valves, a partially/seriously clogged cat (especially being original with that mileage) or many other possibilities.

in short buy 2 or 3 replacement pair of sensors and surrender to the strong possibility that you'll have to replace them again in a few years. an extensive service diagnostic with an emission specialists might reveal unsuspecting issues...........................
 
I doubt it’s engine specific to be honest.
I rebuilt the top end 3-4 years back before I slapped on the turbo.

I replaced every hose & vacumme line, rebuilt the head with OEM valve seals & gaskets. The only non-OEM parts used was a Cometic HG & ARP head studs.

I also integrated a Just Race Parts gauge. So now I can read real numbers from the engine. Air/fuel mixture, water temp, oil temp, oil pressure, boost, ect….

  • Denso 234-4153 Oxygen Sensor $53.70
  • Denso 234-4157 Oxygen Sensor $57.75
I'm not throwing any codes but the "Catalyst" test won't complete so I cannot get emissions tested here in Colorado. I'm pretty sure my cats are good since they are relatively recent. Looking at the data I'm getting from OBDII, I believe the #2 O2 sensor is faulty but I'm just going to replace both of them since they are not $500 each. For reference, I have a 1996 FZJ80 with OEM supercharger. Here's the screen from OBD Fusion:

Well, it’s been about 2 months of trouble free driving with the rig after replacing both O2 sensors.

Yesterday it received the PO130 code. Cleared it & it returned again today. Dang it!

I guess next up will be to take it back to the shop and see if I’ll need a cat replacement.

Does anyone know if the OEM cats & aftermarket cats are dimensionally the same?

I built a cat protector into my custom sliders being built. I’d really not look into having to redesign all that. It’s built from 3/8’s plate steel, very stout.
