For some reason this truck is rubbing me the wrong way.

1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40

Seller claims disc brakes, 2f and power steering. Though it appears to be drums and an F engine. They are also claiming it to be a 78 but Vin indicates an earlier vehicle. Long jumpseats, Bib marker lights and ignition switch on dash....

What are the major differences in the US spec and non US trucks?

That is quite a collection of different year parts.
Looks like an F engine to me.
Oil filler tube on passenger side of engine
Old style metal valve cover
Weber carb with really old style exhaust manifold
Canister oil filter on a 2F? :D
Alternator on passenger side of engine.
Single circuit brakes?
Interesting place to mount the power steering reservoir.
Key switch on dash, turn indicator lights on dash, 30 amp amp meter
3 speed tranny plate on glove box
Early style Tool box under driver seat
Wiring is a mess...

It is a mid 60's 40. F engine, drums non boosted, they made some weird bracket to use late model taillights in a early frame. The only thing not 65ish is the top and doors. Its funny because i think it would be worth more with no top and 1965 title. It looks to be only missing a few details to make it a survivor. No way its anything close to 78 no matter what planet it comes from.

??? this is not a discrepency.... they made their own vin plate from scratch

it is not in line with a 65 or a 78... and just throw a few letters at the end to make it look good?

On my phone and having a hard time seeing the pictures. Looks like a mix of years. Only year in the US that had that gas fill and stamped louvers in the side of the cowl was 72. Engine is from 68-72. Not seeing anything I would say is from a 65. Different manifoldis and valve cover on the F135. 65 Would have ribs on the dash. Three speed, drum breaks, no heater and long jumps seats with no roll bar are common on later FJ40s from other markets.

Someone should let BAT know about the vin discrepancy - that can create some serious problems later and the way they are advertising it doesn't help matters .
Sarge

I don't want to diminish anyone's sale thread or auction. This one is almost to much. I did email BAT thisnmorning and got a pleasant auto reply.

The intake manifold is 68-69 only. Engine block is clearly F.
Clearly is equipped with single circuit drum brakes, no power, no discs.
Early gas tank & fill neck.
Early fuel fill door.
early split hood, with bondo over the split, missing spear.
Early windshield hinges, but 75-newer WS frame w/ low mount wipers (don't try to fold that down!)
69-early bib.
Sketchy PS install.
No reinforcement for roll bar.
74-earlier spare tire
early rear frame w/74-newer taillights glued in

My guess: 1969 FJ40L with a 1978 WS frame, doors, hardtop, taillights.

Built out of junk in the jungle, par for the course with old vehicles sourced out of central america.

So how did they get the power steering to work on a 73 steering box? Jungle engineering at it's finest....
My bad. Figgerd out how to zoom in the pic, appears to be a Sag box, mounted who-knows-how. Can't see the mount or the column to box joint to say it was well done, but the stupid long lines, wrong size belt and cobbled pump bracket all bode ill...

I agree with all the above that this tub truck is a mess of parts - I love the ambulance doors that aren't recessed in the tub and the "forest green" that isn't forest green.

Question about the VIN though.
the vin is inline with a 68' ... but not that extra letters gobblygook

Is there a resource for non-us FJ40 VIN numbers? SOR's website says that the list of VINs is for USA vehicles only.

EDIT: after looking at the truck a little more I think it is definitely 68 era with later doors/hardtop. Split hood with center caulked up, Bib with lights, Late 60's dash, late 60's brake MC with rib in the firewall, no recess for the amby doors, tire carrier syle on the passenger side oh god the list goes on.

Where do I begin with this 40?

Some poor unsuspecting newbie will get sucked into this one and will get the short end of the stick.

IMHO this is not a true '78, this truck is a franken40!
