Sorry for the long delay. I have been digesting all of this while trying to get my current setup functional. I am leaning on the rebuilt 2F route with an H55 for now. Eventually go big with a diesel or LS, way down the road. Any major modifications with pairing up a 4 speed with my current F to get me by? Also, suggestions for sourcing a used 2F?

Separate question but very pertinent, any good resources for a valve adjustment on my F? I got the new carb from @Trollhole installed but I am getting backfires under load. Its not driveable outside of the neighborhood.

Thank you!

Here's my .02 on the 4 speed swap.

IF you are planning the 2F, 5 spd swap soonish, I wouldn't waste time with a 4spd swap unless you get a good deal on the parts. If you are talking a few years, then yes you would be alright with that. You aren't gaining any highway advantage with a 4spd over the 3spd as they are both 1:1 final ratio. A 4spd/3spd tcase gives you a better crawl ratio and another gear to daily drive a little bit.

Here's some info on a 4spd/3 tcase swap

Now your best bet would be to find a 2F/4spd/tcase complete and swap that in from like an FJ60 or something. That would give you the "newest" 2F and tcase. It's pretty bolt in aside from some driveline mods.

Is the backfire through the carb, or out the exhaust?

through carb indicates lean, through exhaust is too rich.

This is really great information, thank you! I was thinking the 4 speed for this summer and maybe going fuel injected while I save my pennies for the 2F H55 swap but if the 4 speed gives me the same top-end... then it is a waste. With the 33s I barely can do highway speeds, aside from my drivability issue...

Question about current carb... Backfire is through the carb. We did the papertowel trick and it is sucking in the towel, hence why I am thinking valves. Does this just sound like a mixture issue?

Correct, you won't gain any top end with the 4 spd swap. 33" tires are a good rubber overdrive for an FJ40.

Through the carb usually indicates lean. Make sure there are no cracks, or missing hoses or anything loose around carb base

I would double check timing and TDC. (you need this anyway to adjust valves)
Make sure your dizzy is correct and not 180° out
Adjust the valves

Then try it again and see what it's doing.

2fe or 3fe with the h55f is a good combination for most driving. If you are mostly just driving around town then the 5 speed is not worth the cost/effort. I drive my 3fe/5speed 60 - 70 mph on the highway all the time with 31" tires. The Toyota EFI is simple and reliable but the timing and fuel maps are in ROM on the processor in the ECU so not modifiable, and no knock sensor. The 3FE ECU does have a HAC sensor so that will help with your elevation.

I have also upgraded to the late 2F aluminum valve cover, no leaks and better cap position. Have to modify the side cover for a PCV valve.

Ok, my 40 has sat for almost a year without seeing any serious driving. Im caving... Is there anyone in the Denver area that would be able to come over and show me how to adjust the valves and do a simple tune-up? I need this girl back on the road!

THANK YOU!!!
