Hi everybody, I am Ron, living in Mongolia, and as there is no one to ask for advice, I hope you will be kind enough to address this issue that keeping me from sleeping for quite awhile now.

As English is not my native language, I hope you will go easy on me with grammatical or typing mistakes... Thanks in advance... ;)

I have bought my beautiful '94 VX limited 1HD-T auto trans' about 6 months ago, 130K on the odometer. The cars works perfectly, body in great condition, engine is smooth, but there's one thing that I am really concerned about- as I was pushing the ECT button few weeks ago, the O/D off lights started flashing, and since than it hasn't changed... The O/D works perfectly, but this blinking light just make me pull off my hair... went to the local Toyota service, and they told me that there is something in the tranny that is about to get broken (they couldn't tell me exactly what) and there's no one in Mongolia that could fix it. Well, that's quite a common answer in Mongolia... I asked what would they recommend, and all they could tell me is to wait until the tranny breaks down, and then to replace it.

Well, after that long (too long?) story, I have few questions-
1. Does it makes any sense? I feel that it should be something electrical and not mechnical
2. If I do need to change the tranny, they said I could change it only with '94 one, while I would prefer to change it to a newer one, will it be possible?

Many thanks for those courage enough to read it all, and for any most welcome advice

Sorry I don't have an answer but welcome :flipoff2: (that's the traditional welcome - no offense). And somebody will be able to help you I'm sure when some smarter Australians log on or the North Americans wake up in a few hours.

Cheers,

David

By the way your English is fine.

Hi RON and welcome .... THIS dose not sound like a transmision isue... more like censer! I don't think the trany is going to blow!

I don't know what tranny is in your model but in my Owner's manual for my 93 us model under the "Automatic Transmission" section, unit (h) it states" If the O/D OFF indicator light flashes contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible. There may be trouble in the transmission system."

Then looking in my Factory Service Manual there are a couple pages to diagnose the transmission by using the flashing code, similar to the "check engine light"

I have to take my kids to hockey practice right now, but when I get back I'll post more of the info up. In the meantime, go and look on the sticker on the door to see what transmission code is there so we can know exactly what transmission you are equipped with.

Hope this helps,
Dave

His tranny is an A442F, same as you guys with '93-94 cruisers here in the US.

This may seem obvious, but you might check fluid level in the transmission.

Welcome to Mud, this place gets more international everyday. I am sure a lot of us would be interested in seeing pics of your truck. Please make sure you post the answer to your problem when you get it figured out.

you ave a TCM code meaning the compuertized transmission control module in your a442 tranny has self-diagnosed a problem. to identify the code

1. get a metal paperclip or jumper wires
2. switch the o/d button on
2. go to the DTC output box on the fireall of the engine (small black plastic box with a pop up lid which may be labelled "DLC1". lift the lid. You should see two small grids of 3x3 contacts and the inside of the lid should have a label code. identify the E1 and TT contacts.
3. turn ignition on
4. go back to the DLC box and insert one end of the paper clip in the E1 hole and one end in the TT hole. BE CAREFUL AND DO NOT GUESS ON THIS. If you don't have ther label code I will post it up for you.

5. go back inside and watch the o/d light flash pattern.
if it blinks continually in 2 second intervals you no longer have a problem so just pull the 10 amp dome fuse to clear the code
6. otherwise count the flashes to get a 2 digit code. the flash sequences are sapareted by a 1.5 second pause. If there are 2 codes there will be a 2.5 second pause between each fresh code.

7. remove the paper clip. turn truck off.
8. post your codes hereand we will decipher.

Thanks guys ;)

In few hours I will finish my things at the office, and will go through the whole process as Semiln suggests, and will of course keep you posted.
I hope I'll be able to solve it out, it really drives me crazy!

As for pics, well, though I bought it 6 months ago, I have been 4.5 months overseas for business, therefore all the mods are still on the way. Once I'm done with the tranny, it is going to go under some serious mods, then it will worth not only a pic, but cover page on Vogue...

Just had all my fluids replaced, don't think this is the problem, but I'll give a look, ther's always could be a mec forgot to close it tightly...

ok Semlin, went through the whole process, and got the following sequence-
6 blinks
1 sec pause
2 blinks
About 2.5 sec pause
8 blinks
1 sec pause
6 blinks
About 4 sec pause

I forgot to mention in the original post that it doesn't start as I turn on the car, but only after I speed over 15-20 kmh

Thanks again :)

I was just speaking for myself.:flipoff2::cheers:

61 = Defective No.2 vehicle speed sensor (In ATM)---severed wire harness or short circuit

86 = Severed engine speed sensor or short circuit --- severed wire harness or short circuit

Looks to me like it's time to chase wires or find another harness in the wrecking yard.

Good luck.

are there lots of Toy dealers out your way?

mo gas has the correct codes.

i believe another member had one or both of the same codes a while back but can't find the post. At least I know I have looked at the picture showing the location of the no. 2 sensor before. i agree with landtank that a loose connection is likely. the #2 speed sensor is on the left side of the transmission looking forward about halfway up the side but I'm not sure from the picture it looks to be towards the back near the transfer case. It attaches with one bolt and look a little like a raked ships funnel pointing forward in the picture. I would disconnect it, clean the connectors and look for loose wires reconnect. pull and replace the 10 amp dome fuse to cleae the code and see if the code comes back.

As for the code 86, the manual points either to a bad harness or a bad TCM, or ECM. I would take a look around while you are down there for signs of wear or dirt of something to explain this.

if these don't work there is a flow chart troubleshooting guide I will scan for you.
