my mag antenna on the roof is a no go at the cove or other location with high degree of overgrowth. I bought the wagon-gear adapter and now I run my cb antenna over in the stock FM antenna mount location on the right fender.

I moved the ham antenna back to rear of the truck , off my gas/water can mount (off the bumper), even then I've lost one or two antennas there to limbs.

Next target antenna for ham will have some type of spring base to it, in order to help deal with the limbs and overgrowth. I guess my alternate mount location is prone to limb hits more than most. I thank Andy has similar antenna setup on his truck but the mount location is more to the center of the truck and up higher than mine...so far I think he has had better luck.

I know one of the mainstream ham antenna companies makes a 2m or dual band antenna with a spring base...I'll comment on that and how it works when I get one...

Hams are technically illegal where I am going. As are all other 2 way radios but cbs and they require licencing. I have certain privileges that I likely can apply. I will be interested in what kind of antenna you decide on Elbert. I like the rear door stop mounts that Shane makes

I have run a spring base antenna on my left front fender, it survived for 3 years but last run at North Cumberland a branch flopped down and caught it at the base of the spring and broke it. I am trying a rubber one, looks like a overgrown hand held antenna. It's only good to 60 watts but I rarely operate on high power. We'll see how it does on this trip.

I'll probably get this one, after my present spare take a terminal hit.

The rubber one Roger mentions might be a good option too...if it transmits ok. The woods and conditions just don't permit an antenna that is great for use and survivable on the trail a the same time.

I generally buy ham stuff from a place galled gigaparts....they are local to Huntsville where I work and on the web too. http://www.gigaparts.com/ Just letting people know if they were looking for a good source of parts. There are other places on the web and I would guess in larger cites as well (like HRO).

I think one of the CB mfg makes a ham antenna that's on a spring base, but I tend to use ham mfg for ham stuff (not that I know much about all of this). The diamond brand stuff is suppose to be well made (i'm told). The above noted antenna is limited to 50 watts too as I recall. I think my present radio puts out 75watts on high power which I dont use much or have not used that often.

Here is my set up. I went with a comet antenna. The bolt is firmly snug, but if u hit something it will move beyond the limit of the spring.

That is really short. :hhmm:
Oh, wait, that is just the base
On the phone it looked like a 6" rubber whip like on my dual band vhf/uhf in the govy.

:princess: volunteered to make about 20 pieces of oven fried chicken to bring along to share worth the group for either lunch or dinner one day. How is the head count looking? I count about 10. You coming and bringing the wife jynx?

So far it looks like the weather is improving.

I was planning on cooking so Jason will not starve. I 'll do a evening meal and 2 breakfasts. Chris Do you want me to do something to go with the chicken ? We need a good head count, right now I think it is: Rob and Hailey Me Todd Chris and princess Jason Mathew Elbert Pillguy Andy?????? Did I miss anyone, are you bringing a passenger?

MH offered to pickup a big tub of potato salad to go with the chicken. Once the head count is set we will plan on 2 pieces of chicken per person and enough psalad to go around. If there is some other side that might be kewl. She will precook it all so we can either reheat it or eat it cold. It is good either way imo :)

Chicken and potato salad sound good to me. I was thinking pasta and meat sauce ( can heat some sauce without meat) and garlic bread for the other dinner.

I missed Cam and Doug on the list.

Add me, my son, Todd, and my dad to the list.

We have been running full tilt for the last 2-3 weeks and I am not sure we will be running with either crew. That and we are getting ready to close on the farm so priorities are about to get shuffled up a little bit. If you guys get to wheel in the snow I am gonna be super jealous.

You guys have fun and be safe. I hope we get to make a trip or 2 before GSMTR.

Roger, do you need any more food contributions?

Am I reading right, we're on our own for lunches and one dinner? (I'll still bring something just in case)

If all goes as planned, do you think we'll be near pavement Sunday morning? Monday is a school/work day and we're looking at a 6+ hour drive home.

Can you camp anywhere along the trail here?

Chris and MH are doing chicken and potato salad Friday night and I will bake some biscuits and I am doing Paste with meat sauce and garlic bread Saturday evening. I will do breakfast both mornings. On your own for lunch/snacks

As far as we know you can camp anywhere along
The trail. We are exploring so not sure where we will camp Saturday night, but the trails parallel the Interstate so should not be far from pavement.

Sorry guys....I'm out, too much going on here at home.
