I can get your early FJ40 steering wheel made brand new. Actually, it will be better than new! Here is the deal:

I have a 1966 and 1967 FJ40. I will be restoring one of them. The steering wheels were bad, and had cracks separations, which I understand are usual.

I wanted to get a new one, but have found that they are not made new anymore, NOS are no longer available, and all used wheels are in poor condition.

I dont want a repair, as the repairs can NOT last, and will eventually crack. The ONLY way to get a perfect wheel is to have it re-cast.

I did my research and found the best to be Dennis at Quality restorations. Here is his website. His work is AMAZING!

Quality Restoration - Steering Wheel Restoration

He will take an old steering wheel, strip off all of the old plastic, make a new mold for it, cast a new wheel using high-tech plastics (IN ANY color you want) that WILL NOT crack (Lifetime warranty), and then sands and buffs till it looks better than a new one could EVER be.

Dennis' work is without comparison.

To make the mold, it costs money due to the time. If I can get 8 people to pay half up front, he will make the mold. Then, we will all have to send our wheels to him to have them cast.

Here is the BAD part........They will cost $900.00

Considering that we who restore can NOT get new ones, the price seems to fit the demand.

So.....if you are interested, let me know. Once we get 8 people interested, we will have to send the money and our wheels to him, or I can collect the money and the wheels to send to him. We can use cashier's checks made payable to him so that no one has to worry about me! I am an attorney here in Phoenix, so it would be pretty hard for me to con anyone. :p

Let me know if you are interested. Dennis told me that the CORD people (an old type of car) have been the only crew to be able to pull it off. I know that we are tight knit enough to do it. Let me know.

Thanks, CJ WILSON

I wish I could dump that kind of money.
Mine's on the way to being completely cracked.

$900???

So if you could get 80 people it would only cost 90 bucks? That's about what I would want to pay. . .

Is it a typo counselor? $900.00 in green George Washingtons per steering wheel?

Or is it $900.00 to create the mold and then how much per steering wheel?

Are the center caps going to be included or is that extra?

I am interested in learning more. Please submit briefs and proposed orders....

Wow! Sorry, too rich for my wallet.

I can think of about a million other things that $900 could be better spent on my rig. To a purist it might be a bargain, but way to rich for my blood.

Not for 99.98% of the LC crowd and only a few will pony up for that cost and if they do they wont tell you they did. My guess is either a FJ45LV or FJ25 I would imagine. Now for those guys that are restoring a 1930's - '60's euro or domestic ride that is nothing in the cost of the restoration.

His work is the best, you get what you pay for. In a LC the wheel is not the center of attention so it's hard to justify.

Wow CeeJay, is that really $900 per wheel? I guess I consider myself a purist, but even I find that really steep

Can you please confirm the end price per wheel, and if it includes refinished horn button and all?

Thanks for looking into this

Yeah, they would be $900 each, using our steel insides, and would not involve the horn button. Maybe we just have Ehsan start these up???? :o

I dont know if he is using the Alumalite or not, but he would somehow have to get our metal guts inside that mold to line up perfectly. That would seem really difficult.

Dont get me wrong, I dont think that is cheap by ANY means.

While the FJ45s use the same steering wheel as the FJ40s the FJ25s don't. The center part of the wheel is different. The bottom is bigger. There is a pin that sticks out of that to cancel the turn signals. I would be interested more in the FJ25 but there is no way in the world to get nine people to put up $900. I did get a FJ40 steering off of my 1961 FJ40 that is a about as good as you can find used. I didn't pick this vehicle up in AZ. While the tub was toast the great wheel was still in great shape. There still are few good steering wheels around probably not going to find them in AZ. I picked this cruiser up in The pacific Northwest. With the cost of the vehicle and getting it I still didn't pay anyway near $900. Looking out of state would be a better idea than trying to get eight other people together to pay $900 I afraid that just isn't going to happen. Do a search in the FJ25 forum for the tread on the side and rear Toyota emblem and I think you will see what I mean.

Maybe Eshan could simply export a few steering wheels from over there. They probably kept using the same wheel for far longer over there...?

I just wonder if they would be in any better shape. I think it's pretty dry in that part of the world. That's the main problem her in AZ is they crack from the dry climit and heat. Not to hard to find them just that they are all cracked. Central America might be a better place to find them in good shape as long as the center where the horn is isn't rusted out. Cruiser_Guy? Specter shows a change date of 7/69 for when the wheel changed from 36 spline to 33 spline to fit your 66 or 67.

Steering wheel changed when Toyota went away from the steering gear being integral to the steering column, 08/72.

I would think that restoring a wheel wouldn't be that difficult.
Cracks can be filled and sanded. I know resto guy's that repaint their stock wheels.

Cee Jay

What year? I have one out of a 71. Don't remember what kind of shape it is in though. Don't remember any real bad stuff. I'll dig it out this evening when we get home to see. If you are interested PM me.

I'm just going by what SOR has had on their website for years. A spline change in 7/69. Then in 8/72 (73 model year) the wheel designed change with the steering box change in the FJ40s. Seems I've seen the later style wheel on FJ55 of early years. When did the wheel design change in the FJ55?
