So camp it was and the 40 got ignored...

I did get the alt. and ps belts on, the last heater hose is on, shark motor bike stereo is 1/2 installed in the glove box (waiting to get the cage done and in before mounting the speakers), threw an led light in behind it to light up the glove box a bit, ds oe floor mat got rubber backing glued to it so now its not so holy and tattrerd lookin and fits pretty good. Probably some more crap but Im still in camp mode so...

Managed to get some junk done. Speakers are mounted under the dash and to the a pillar, started an exhaust and have it done past the t case x member. Buddy gave me a long assed cherry bomb muffler so thats going in for now, made a bunch of 1/4" flanges so it can be replaced easily if it sounds like s***. Got the msd high vibration coil and mount installed on the ps inner fender..... The steering links are all tight and jammed tie rods are tight and pinned, threw an ome steering stabilized on that I had lying around with an extra ruff stuff shock mount I had left over under the winch plate.

Summers gettin in the way man lol. Too much camp not enough garage time...

Bah! I dont know of I like winter anymore....

Well missed wheelin bbh yesterday so I hit the 40 hard to make up for it. Randy and Dan stopped by and the rest of the brake lines got finished and bled, clutch got bled, carbon build up in one of the spark plug holes got chased away (po left a plug loose), and some beer got drunk.

Roll cage is gone to get blasted, epoxied and painted. Seats are out to get redone. Shes got speakers now.... Exhaust is built and installed. I think thats it....

Just need a carb master to stop by and help me set up the new trollhole carb and dizzy. Have to figure out the timing and a bunch of crap ive never done before lol. If it wasnt for that we were tempted to fire it up last nite for the first time in 18 months. That and I didnt have any gas lol.

Progress pics. Well kinda, found out my brake master has a leak so thats one step backwards lol. Lucked out and a buddy of mine had one that should work from a 75 series, bolt spacing look to be the same so Im gonna try it out. Front and rear lines are roughly in the same spot so thats a bonus. Its brand new so it shouldnt leak. Dude also gave me a new style 2 bolt 79 series master and a new style 2 bolt clutch master for the hell of it. Gotta love ppl who give you free stuff

Picked up the cage and light buckets from blasting/epoxy priming/painting yesterday then in a moment of weakness pulled the trigger on a set of new style truck light led headlights. Gotta say, they look like shiny candy that I just wanna pet...

Bunch of other junk Im sure I forgot about but its all in the pics.

Bunch more stuff off the list yesterday.

Swapped out the leaky brake master and bled the brakes. Had to make one new line but it was a nice short one so it wasnt a huge pain and Im an expert at bench bleeding masters now so I can teach classes and whatnot. Extended the ps cowl vent drain down to frame level, the stock tube came out of the firewall and was pointed right at the starter so i used a brass elbow from an old heater line to make a 90 then attached another drain line. Gave up on routing the ds drain like it was from factory (3 freaking 90* bends lol) and just ran it through the top of the tranny hump and down past the bell housing. Funny thing, I somehow had a chunk of the exact same foamy rubber hose that the stockers were made out of, love finding random stuff you didnt know you had.

Found out the key for the lock on my stoosh box under the ds seat hit the handle so I threw a new one together with some 1/8 plate and an old acme wrench i bent up. Half assed but it works. Threw the third brake light on, drilled a hole in the fw for my speedo cable, then for some unexplained reason I spent an hour making the most complex overflow hose holder dealie ever made. I had the stock clip attached to the side of the rad mount where the support rod bolts on but it wasnt the right shape to hold the hose good and it ended up getting all bent to s*** from someone tryin to make it work. Ended up using a piece of 1/8, a piece of 3/8 and a hole saw slug to whip up a new one. Had this little mini clevis lying around so it holds the hose and is attached to a mini tow point lookin bracket thats bolted to the rad support.... Yeah.

No beef missing from this rig. It's been a while since I caught up with your progress. The taillights look great.

Thanks man, was wondering what ppl would think of the transport exhaust light buckets lol. At least I can say theyre one of a kind....... lol.

Yesterday I finished off a few small things then got semi edumakated on the finer points of setting timing. My buddy Frank whos my old mechanic (certified my first car ever) popped by. Havent seen him in ages and I loved the look on his face when he saw the 40 for the first time. He liked it for sure. Anyways this guy used to teach in automotive department at the local college and he was hitting all the key points regarding timing that ive been reading up on here which gave me a lot more confidence. Said hes gonna pop by with his timing light this week and help get er timed and fired up. Sweet.

If thaT gets done maybe i can get it over to my buddy pete the electrical wizard to wire up..... I just wanna drive it now man. Have to remember to start going through it checkin and tightening junk..

Love the tailgate!

That exhaust is going to melt your bushings. Ask me how I know...

Yeah, it is kinda close to the shackle eh? Lol. Ill wait to see what it sounds like before I chop it up. If it sounds half assed ill mess w the tail pipe a little and get it to a better spot.

Painted a bunch more stuff blue yesterday then rearranged the garage a bit while the paint was dryin. Seat back panels are done as well as the seat mounts, front outer fenders, and due to popular demand my rear diff cover is no longer mint green. All my buddies were buggin me to get the cover done so I guess peer pressure works.

Yesterday I finally motivated myself to find the leak in my xfer and fix it. Had all the seals on stash for a while now and was too stupid to fix it when the tub was off but thats another story.

Anyway practiced on my spare transfer case then undid the rear d shaft and messed with the leaky mofo. Broke one of the bolts that hold the backing plate to the nose cone (makin up names for s*** as I go along) but since I had the spare apart I just snagged the cone from that one and cleaned/painted it. Turns out it was leakin between the cone and the xfer case, it had a gasket in there but there was an obvious trail of gear oil where it was seepin through at the bottom. Threw on a thin coat of sealant on both sides of the gasket, put the new seal in and reassembled then filled the case up.

No leaks this morning!!! Awesome! It leaked a drop or two/day before, just enough to leave a wet spot on the floor. No wet spot this morning man.

Today my mechanic/carb and dizzy guru is comin to help fire this mofo up and hopefully set the timing. Im damn excited to say the least! Wish me luck man.

Yeah well we didnt get it to run yesterday. Had it all hard wired and the motor was turning but we would only get one spark out of the distributor then nothin. After screwing around for a bit we figured it was the points coil dealie in the distributor. Called Marshall who answered right away and hes sendin me another one. Awesome service man. Got as far as poppin the old distributor in then called it a night.

Actually no, like a dumbass I hooked the old dizzy to my new msd coil (that doesnt have a resistor) and cranked er over a couple times... It didnt fire just sputtered a couple times. The coil did get really hot though and thats when I decided to take a break.

One other thing I noticed while cranking. The fuel filter which is before the pump never got any fuel to it and im thinking it should have because we did crank it quite a few times. Theres gas in the tank and I have the fuel line hooked up to the nipple thats closer to the front of the tank (looking from the ds). The other nipple is plugged since the trollhole carb does not have a return line. Is there a way to check if the fuel pump is pullin? Disco the line at the pump and check for suction maybe?

Dont know if im gonna try again with the old dizzy and coil or if I should just wait for the part for the new dizz and go from there....

On a positive note we had a vacuum gague hooked up to it while we were messing around and it held steady at 24 psi the whole time. Even at 11pm it was still holding at 24 w no movement. Guess thats good.

Took a break from tryin to start the 40 yesterday and invented some front bump stops. Cut up a pipe that fit nicely into the coil bucket posts and welded a 1/4" cap to it with a big bolt welded through a hole in the center. The pipe fits into the coil bucket tube with an extended tj? bump stop bolted to it and is held in place by a nut/ bolt. Turned out semi adjustable lol, just have to drill another hole in the bucket pipe and slide the stop mount up or down.

Took this opportunity to make and throw on some coil isolator rubbers and paint the coils since they were out.

Aside from the fabrication and build, I like all the little details you add your your builds like the D-shackle hose bracket, JD sticker, open end wrench welded to roll cage, tailpipe trimming, etc... Lots of Rat Rod inspiration. Great work.
