Took the 40 for a rip with a buddy the other night and after making fun of him for drivin like a grandma we swapped seats and i proceeded to show him how its done. While doing so i broke the damn thing lol.

Taking off while turning left in 1st from a stop sign we hear a loud crack and i see shrapnel fly out of my periferals. Turns out the golden torque monster under the hood coupled with the aussie and big meats (and obviously the dumbass behind the wheel) sheared the axle studs and both dowel pins on the ps rear axle. Happened a block from home so i kicked the shaft back in and nursed er back to the garage in 1st.

They may have gotten loose since we had it on the rocks a little the day before, the ps nuts were all still nice and tight if that means anything.

So i said f it and drilled and tapped both rear hubs and axle flanges to accept 7/16-20 x 1.5" fine thread cap head bolts. Pretty straight forward, had to grind the bolt heads slightly so the rim would clear but that isnt a big deal at all.

To finish the ds off i replaced the 7mm 80 series dowel pins with 10mm 100 series units. Used a 25/64 drill bit to open up the holes in the hub and a 10mm bit for the holes in the axle flange. Worked out mint and the new larger dowels went in with the help of a hammer and brass drift. I left the 7mm dowels on the ps for another day cause im lazy.

After a confirmation boot around the hood all is well.

Chaswick (if that even is your real name !! :D) - where did you buy your Nitro shafts from?

I think if you go to stock shafts you probably won't break studs... I'll be happy to trade with you :D

Lol thats my trolling alias. Used to be "cheezeburger wallrus" but the facebook nazis wanted my real name. I gave them chaswick william burger with an id to prove it and they were satisfied.

I got the shafts last summer, a local parts place supposedly found the last available set from the last run nitro made. Would have had to wait for the next batch if he didnt snag em for me which was cool. Gotta admit I did hesitate before taking the drill to them. ..

Your trade offer has been considered and declined btw.

Thats a good upgrade. Put some loctite on those bolts too if you didn't already so they don't loosen. I haven't broken mine yet, but shafts are still tight from the factory. Its a low mileage junk yard axle, and I haven't removed the shafts yet. Ive taken it to moab twice and the studs have held up. I even got on it a bit and snapped my traction bar and they are still hanging on. You guys need to have a jeep safari or something like they do in Moab. 2000 trucks brings a lot of money to a town, and the cops leave them alone as a result unless they are doing something crazy.

I was trying to figure out if you actually could build/own your trucks on a fry cook salary...

^ Damn straight I can. Lol. Nah I really make nickel for a living the burger boy deal was back in college.

Meh we have too many big brodozers that agitate cops and some picky officers. Locktite was applied.

Havent updated this deal in a while now....

The 40 got driven a lot last summer and it even got wheeled a couple times. Did good to boot.
Workin on the hard top now, got a "new" set of full doors and a "new" frp lid that are better than what i had but still require some work. Ordered some keyed steering arms and gm 1 ton tie rod ends and links so thats hopefully gonna get messed with soon. Also planning a cut and turn at the same time as i found out it doesnt have enough caster...

Pics.

Substituted some paisely material for fiberglass mat on the inside of the hard top....

Still a bit of work to do on it but it turned out decent. Drip rail will not be staying black.

Thanks guys!

Nowhere near done but its good enough to enjoy on the road and decently capable on the trail. When i recoup from the steering arm/trunnion/cut n turn/one ton rod mod im planning to start saving for the orion it sorely needs.

Couple crappy vids from this summer.

76 4 speed and one piece, 529s in the diffs. The t case has the nose cone brace and the case brase so hopefully it wont rip apart before i can afford an orion. I do have 2 spares on stash just in case.
