Do you have 20K or 30K in it? I didn't want to question Kevin earlier because I thought he mixed it for you. (I don't see 20K pic in the 1st post.)

Is the ~60F temperature when at idle or driving on freeway? What was the ambient temperature? I am trying to decide if I should switch over to 30K.

Mine's at 20k. I staying at about 60 at idle. On the freeway, I'm dropping below 50 pretty regularly. I haven't checked the ambient temps but its :censor: hot. If its working in this weather, I would call it a sucess:cool:

I replaced the fan clutch in my '97 80 about a year ago with a new one from Toyota. The A/C at idle is cooler, but still unacceptable. The A/C cools off quickly at speed and will get downright cold after a few minutes at freeway speeds. This is quite annoying on the drive home on the freeway, as the A/C heats up as traffic gets worse.

I need to clean everything with simple green, I expect that to help somewhat.

Do you think simply adding (rather than refilling) the 30k CST fluid to my clutch would improve things?

Sounds like typical low airflow and AZ heat deal. Are the seals in place? Most important are the one on the hood that seals to core support and the foams around the radiator.

Whatever brand of soap works, but I have found that soaking with water for a couple of hours works best, so sprinkler, etc. The bug entrails get baked on, soaking liquidizes them.:hillbilly:

Adding to your fluid will improve it, but IMHO with our weather, it needs all of the help it can get. If your going to mess with it, I would do it right, new fluid at a known viscosity. I have plenty of fluid, so no issue there.

FWIW, I've been fighting AC issues for months now, about to tear into the evaporator for expansion valve replacement. I had some 10kcst so put that in the fan clutch but have seen no measurable difference but will still be moving to 20kcst after the expansion valve replacement.

Hey Kevin, do you know if the LC100s used 3kcst like their 80 brethren too?

 I have always been told that 100's are perfect in every way, so why would it matter?

Have played with most of the Toyota clutches, the 100 is the exception, have only briefly looked at, tested the drag on one and it felt good. The owners that I have talked to haven't reported much vent temp rise at idle. The other 4.7 rigs (Sequoia & Tundra) that I have done resulted in a noticeable improvement. My opinion is; with AZ weather if it makes a couple of degrees difference, I will take it!:hillbilly:

My experience is; it doesn't matter what viscosity came in them, if they have a full set of shearing ridges (like the early clutches) they need ~10-13K, the later type with the neutered ridges need thicker. The limiting factor on the later rigs is the serpentine belt, they tend to slip easier, so cant tune them as tight.

Local source in Tucson if needed

Testing about to commence on Kenny's Sequoia and Taco fan clutches. :hillbilly:

Called Hobby Barn in Tucson at Speedway and Alvernon (for those who can't make it up to the Valley of the Sun) they have 20,000cst 30ml containers for about 8 bucks each. Don't know how that compares to the local dealers, or if they stock that high. They also had 50,000 for those who want something that will probably *never* freewheel. :)

It's the season, I still have plenty of fluid if anyone wants to tune/change the clutch juice before it gets hot. Have 10K-30K so can be mixed anywhere between.

The 3rd one of the week is draining.:hillbilly:

I've been thinking of making a trip up there once school's out in a few weeks, if we can find a way to make it work.

Do want. I'm gonna have to figure out a way to get a small quantity from you- enough for 2 clutches. I'll maybe take pics or something to identify them (or re-read all your threads to figure out how to identify them) to figure out which fluid to use. I'm not concerned about mpg...

Why? Buy some and do it at home. It's easy. I was thinking of doing Michelles XTerra this summer.

but it won't have the magic touch of the master ;p

what are your thoughts on the pusher fans? Will that help make the system cooler or will it only help with the warming at idle?

I think most don't need it. However, I did!!! I have a black LX and with a new radiator, thermastat, reworked fan clutch, and foam blocks around the front of the radiator I was still having warming at idle. Now with the pusher hooked up to the ac mid pressure switch with after run I don't have the warming at idle, on trails or in rush hour traffic...and as a little bonus it is cooler when I come out from running in some where (ie the ac is cooler faster). I am a fan!! However I have to understand that it does restrict some flow at speed, which I was ok with since I had no problems with that and still don't.

Now the master can comment;)
