Got this from another thread:

On a 2000 LC/LX the speed and reverse wire are tapped at the ECU behind the glove box... Should be the same.

There are 5 connectors on the ECU, looking at ECU, from top to bottom

E5 / 31 pins
E6 / 24 pins
E7 / 17 pins
E8 / 28 pins
E9 / 22 pins

Speed wire is VIOLET E8-Pin 15

Reverse Wire is Red-Blue E8-Pin 2

You'll have to remove the glove box to get to the ECM.

Amplifier placement

Reviving an old thread to confirm that this information, along with the factory wiring diagram book, were accurate regarding the wiring. This info helped tremendously with making the install easier.

The reverse wire is E8 Pin 2, although on my 2000 LC it was Red-Black as far as I could tell. It may have been Red-Blue. The Violet speed sensor wire was in E8 Pin 15. I wired the reverse wire and speed sensor wire for the for the head unit to these wires.

I wired up a Kenwood DMX7706S with an optional backup camera. I grounded the parking brake wire to the head unit chassis itself, to override the "only in park" functionality. I wired the camera in line with the head unit when I connected to power and ground (i.e. I did not tap into the reverse light for power or ground, since I have already tapped reverse at the ECU).

I also had to repair the factory wiring harness for the factory amp and speaker wiring, a previous owner had hack jobbed the wiring to install an aftermarket system. I replaced the cheap aftermarket speakers he installed with some Rockford Fosgates. Crutchfield had a Toyota speaker bracket that dropped them right in the doors with the factory installation holes. They also provided a factory wiring hardness adapter that made installation with the factory wiring harness a breeze. I discovered one of the wires for the driver door speaker had been cut at some point, so I had to spend some time fishing a new wire through the door to replace it. I'm pretty impressed with the quality of sound I'm getting out of the factory amp and sub.

Will post pictures later.

What did you need the speed sensor wire for?
Thanks!

My 2 cents, This all was a bit confusing... Just finished my back up cam installation... 8 hours later!

Here is the camera I used and looks great even at night!

Amazon product ASIN B005Q65JHM
They just updated it this year to look better and its SUPER CHEAP! (like 8 bucks cheap).

Anyways, the first bit of running wires and what not just took time to do it correctly and not break any of the tabs on the panels when rooting around. I Tapped the reverse light wire in the back (right at the tail light) for power for the camera that way it only turns on when I'm in reverse (as stated before the downside is you can only view your camera when you put the rig in reverse, honestly though the only time you will actually ever want to look at your cam when not reversing is when you first install it all and are still enamored with it).

Anyways, when I ran all the wires I plugged in in and turned it on however to my dismay when I put in in reverse... NOTHING happened.... Grr this was frustrating!

So I did some searching and found that when I was installing my Pioneer deck (appradio 3) i never connected the rearview (violet) wire to a reverse wire... So this started another wild goose hunt... Upon reading this Thread i was convinced that i could take the "5 min Route" and tap it at the ECU, however upon seeing the SH!TTON of wires ClusterEFFING the ECU and the fact that there was NOT a red/blue striped wire at E8 pin 2 I decided to take a little look-see at the Kick panel.

This was a great choice, because there is really only two bundles of wires there... a grey rectangular bit (the wrong one...) and a WHITE SQUARE one (the right one... At this point i was quite tired and convinced that I would not finish in one day (at this point it was 11:15pm).

So I tapped the red/black striped wire that was in the second row from the top. And second wire from the left.... I attached a picture to show you what one.

From here on out all else was smooth, I hooked it all up and tested it... and the feed flipped on when I put it in reverse! (I WAS SO HYPED)...

Anyways hope this helps anyone else that tried to find the right wire lol

This helped tremendously. Thank you!

Seeing as how you circled all of the wires I will point out that it is the one that is directly center of your circle and most prominently touching your finger.

I think it's generally totally fine to skip it. Some head units can benefit from the VSS to:

- Make vehicle position in driving directions more accurate than with GPS alone
- Raise or lower volume depending on speed (to account for road noise)
- I guess they could also display a speedometer though I don't know if any do
- It used to be the case that wireless carplay only worked if you had VSS set up, but the regulations changed and manufacturers issued firmware updates, so I think that is no longer a reason.

I can't find my VSS wire in my 2000 100 series... the #15 pin on the E8 harness is brown, not violet, so I don't know if I'll bother sleuthing it out any further. I guess I could hook it up and see what happens, but I don't know how I would tell if it's actually working.

EDIT: Actually, in full daylight, I can tell that it probably was violet at some point, pretty faded now. So that's definitely the one.

Thanks ya'll. This thread was really helpful. I learned a lot about the ECM. and Kickpanel. My backup camera install was pretty easy. I just finished installing it on my 02 to go with my Grom Line VL2. I powered it from the right rear backup light. The camera is integrated into one of the license plate lights. Since my other license plate light is LED, there is still plenty of light to the plate.
I made an install video on our YT page @AirstreamNJeepNLandcruiser
