Correct, but remember, the camera will only have power while you are in reverse, if you tap into the reverse light circuit to power the camera.

I'm fine with that, only need to see behind when backing up. Just want to make sure I understand how it's giving to work. Probably time to bust out the radio directions.

Yeah, mine requires a few finger strokes to get to the camera, from the display screen I usually leave it on. Tried it out before I hooked up the reverse wire. Hooked the camera up to begin with, mostly for the :princess:, so it HAS to come on with reverse, or she won't remember how to use it......but it is nice for dogs and kids and such.

I stuck the camera where I thought I would want it with 3M double sided tape, then ran my wires. Next, I'll hard mount the camera to the bumper, as it appears to be a good location.

EDIT: There is at least one wire up under the trunk that will allow you to give power to the camera anytime the ignition is on. There was some discussion of it, either above, or in another reverse camera thread. If you go that route, you can pull up the camera anytime you call it up on the screen, reverse or not. Not necessary, but I figured I might as well. Never know when I want to look at it.

At the moment I have to push the camera button on the radio to have vision, the camera comes on when in reverse.

My 2 cents, This all was a bit confusing... Just finished my back up cam installation... 8 hours later!

Here is the camera I used and looks great even at night!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005Q65JHM/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They just updated it this year to look better and its SUPER CHEAP! (like 8 bucks cheap).

Anyways, the first bit of running wires and what not just took time to do it correctly and not break any of the tabs on the panels when rooting around. I Tapped the reverse light wire in the back (right at the tail light) for power for the camera that way it only turns on when I'm in reverse (as stated before the downside is you can only view your camera when you put the rig in reverse, honestly though the only time you will actually ever want to look at your cam when not reversing is when you first install it all and are still enamored with it).

Anyways, when I ran all the wires I plugged in in and turned it on however to my dismay when I put in in reverse... NOTHING happened.... Grr this was frustrating!

So I did some searching and found that when I was installing my Pioneer deck (appradio 3) i never connected the rearview (violet) wire to a reverse wire... So this started another wild goose hunt... Upon reading this Thread i was convinced that i could take the "5 min Route" and tap it at the ECU, however upon seeing the SH!TTON of wires ClusterEFFING the ECU and the fact that there was NOT a red/blue striped wire at E8 pin 2 I decided to take a little look-see at the Kick panel.

This was a great choice, because there is really only two bundles of wires there... a grey rectangular bit (the wrong one...) and a WHITE SQUARE one (the right one... At this point i was quite tired and convinced that I would not finish in one day (at this point it was 11:15pm).

So I tapped the red/black striped wire that was in the second row from the top. And second wire from the left.... I attached a picture to show you what one.

From here on out all else was smooth, I hooked it all up and tested it... and the feed flipped on when I put it in reverse! (I WAS SO HYPED)...

Anyways hope this helps anyone else that tried to find the right wire lol

Thank you for this, ran into the same thing, you are right about the "ClusterEffing the ECU" this made me laugh as I thought the same, never like to tap into tight spaces like that accidentally pull something loose. I also did NOT have the Red and Blue wire at the ECU e8 could of done with out having to hunt that down, I though I might be color blind I stared for so long.... I have 2001 non/navi.

Hooking up an AVH-NEX4000 tonight and trying the kick panel method... Thanks again for the pics and humor.

Let us know how it works out with pictures. Im looking to add the rear back up aid or camera. It would be nice to have it automated so that it auto mactically turns on in reverse...

Reverse= Red/Black wire, driver kick in square white plug (+) trigger

I completed my install today with a video cable with a built in detection wire - just one wire to run from back to front. I ran a pair of wires from the left reverse light to the tailgate, utilizing the plastic chase that the license plate and lock wires are in (tight fit, but it worked) In the tailgate I spliced the three positive wires (camera, reverse, and detection) and connected the camera. I ran the video cable with integrated detection wire up to the head unit and made the video and reverse detect connection. No need to dig for a wire up front at the shifter or in the harness, done in about two hours.

This is the one I went with. It was too long, but I just coiled the zip-tied the excess. There is a 20 footer that probably would have been enough.

I'd like to confirm that this wiring worked with my pioneer head unit on my 2000 TLC. Thanks!

Hi All

I am hoping that some of you who have contributed to this thread previously can help me diagnose where I have gone wrong with my reverse camera! I have just installed a Kenwood DDX717WBT (DDX717WBT | Multimedia and Navigation | Car Electronics | KENWOOD Australia) and Parkmate CDD28-KN (Parkmate | Products > Reverse Cameras > CDD28KN HD Colour CMOS Camera) to my right-hand drive 2007 UZJ100 (no factory reverse camera or amp).

The camera has been wired as per manufacturers instructions. The power wire has been connected directly to the positive wire on the reverse light assembly; and ground connected to the negative at the reverse light assembly. The RCA runs from the camera to the dedicated rear camera input on the Kenwood HU.

I expected that with accessories on and reverse gear selected the camera view would automatically display on the HU but this does not happen (nothing happens when I select reverse). If I manually select the camera via the HU settings, it displays the camera, but only when in reverse gear.

There is a dedicated reverse power supply on the back of the Kenwood HU which is not connected to anything. I don't think this is necessary as the camera is obviously getting power and displaying when manually selected and in reverse. However after a whole weekend trying to figure this out, I tried connecting the reverse power supply from the HU to the locations behind the glovebox and in the footwell (as described above) without any change.

If anyone has suggestions on where I went wrong or what I need to do to make the camera automatically display when reverse is selected it would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Both camera rca inputs aren't brown are they? are you sure you got the right one? And are the soft controls set up right? As in page 35-37 of the online manual

on page 69 I'm looking for what you said is a power supply for your camera? is your purple wire connected to anything?

I'm thinking it isn't. I also have never seen a 12V out dedicated to a camera.

car needs to be running, in reverse, purple wire connects to reverse trigger from car somewhere.
Power and ground from reverse bulbs is OK to power the camera. Then your video signal goes to the deck. You shift to reverse and the purple gets a poke and tells the HU to display the rear video input.
Double check REAR/FRONT input for RCA on the back of the kenwood.
Double check soft input controls on touchscreen.

Had the same sort of problem on a different model Kenwood.

In my case there was a headunit system setting for the reverse trigger. The setting goes one of two ways, 1) the trigger is a wire going to ground, and 2) the trigger is the wire going to 12v.

Thanks jerryb and LBridges. RCA inputs on the HU are both yellow and labelled 'rear camera' and 'front camera'. I am definitely connected to the rear camera input but will try the other to be sure.

Soft controls have all been set according to the manual.

I can rule out any issues with the camera as it operates properly when manually selected through HU settings (and in reverse).

The purple camera power supply (P. 69) is not connected to anything currently. I am let to believe this is why it does not auto display when reverse gear is selected (and how I ended up at this thread!).

I did try a few of the reverse power options suggest above without any luck. Any suggestions of where the nearest/most convenient reverse power supply is in a late model 100 series keeping in mind this is a right-hand drive? Might be time to buy a multimeter.

Cheers

there are red with black stripe wires all over the place. '05-'07 at least. I'm just assuming they would use the same wire colors in other markets.
If you didn't bring one from the rear along with your RCA plug I would take from under the shifter, ECM probably behind glove box, then both lower cowl areas.
once you get that you should be good to go. Probably need a look at your year and model manual to be sure. DVM is sort of important to install electrical stuff.

I just install a double indash dvd, reverse camera, tv, & navi system. It looks freking awsome, but I have a problem in order for the reverse camera to work when I put it in reverse, I need to hook up the reverse wire from the radio to the revers connetion some where in the shifter are (I think) but I can't find where the wire is located in the shifter area can some one help me out? Maybe some one that have a wiring diagram might help.

I ended up hooking up my camera to a specific fuse under the dash (presumably related to back up lights). Might suggest you give Crutchfield (Crutchfield: Car Stereo, Speakers, Home Theater, Pro Audio, 4k TV), a call. Not sure, but they might be able to help you with a specific location for your hook up. Ask for the tech folks in automotive before you go into an explanation, they are great folks with all kinds of automotive wiring knowledge.

Thanks for your input guys, appreciated. I had a spare cable run to the cargo area from the dash for future accessories and just used this to get power from the reverse + at the taillight to the dedicated camera power input on the HU. The camera is all working fine now.

Cheers

There are 5 connectors on the ECU, looking at ECU, from top to bottom

E5 / 31 pins
E6 / 24 pins
E7 / 17 pins
E8 / 28 pins
E9 / 22 pins

Speed wire is VIOLET E8-Pin 15

Reverse Wire is Red-Blue E8-Pin 2

You'll have to remove the glove box to get to the ECM.

Amplifier placement

I found the reverse wire as shown in the quote above however on my 2000 Land Cruiser the reverse wire was red with a black stripe not a blue stripe. ignore the purple wire with the tap on it in the pic. the red/black(positive trigger) reverse wire is on the ecu, second plug up from the bottom and second wire up on the front of the plug as you face it
