I am nearing completion of a frame off 1979 FJ40. We are respraying color code 031 on the body which is the factory color. I have seen the CCOT trucks but I was looking for (hoping for) a few trucks out there to be posted up in how they look clean and in the driveway. The painter told me yesterday that he is surprised that the 031 is so crisp white as the original paint we started with was tinted a bit yellowish. I figured it was tinted a bit yellow from age. I went up to his shop and did note that the doors has already been painted. They are a bright clear white. I know who provided the paint and there have been no mistakes.

I used search but it shows several versions of white which don't help me much. I reallly was hoping for 031 on a few drivers that I can see what this will look like.

thanks

1979 Factory white color

Hi Riddler,
Isn't the Cygnus White or Swan White (012 or T12)the original factory white for that year? As far as I know it's been the standard white in the middle and late seventies.
Anyway,I've seen FJ and BJs in original paint and it was a bit tinted yellowish indeed!
Enjoy your resto!

I know the ID plate on the truck has two color codes listed. One for the body 031 and one for the front bezel which is more of a creamy white. I know CCOT did tons of trucks in the 90's in 031 and all were late model 79-83 trucks. Somewhere on mud was a color chart that was posted. I am going to FAQ now.

thanks

Mine's 031--not wrecked any more :) it's definitely creamier than pure white

Question for Texx

Texx- So does you truck match teh colors shown in the two links? Both appears to be called 031 but seem like a bright white? I know that 1979 is color code 031 with a creamy white bezel right? Is fresh paint brighter than aged paint. I know that sounds dumb but I am wondering...

My color sprayed so far looks very very close if not exact to yours.

thanks

Aaron

My '78 is 031 and the bezel is gray. I'll post a Pic a bit later.

Oh. Here's a rig that I like a lot. Looks like 031, but the bezel isn't gray. Wish it were mine....

Paint definitely does "color" and age with time and pollutants, and there are variations from brand to brand of paint. I can send you the formula I'm using if you wish, to see what differences there are, I've just finished repainting the truck after the repairs. I'm using PPG. Also, trucks that have been clear coated tend to look lighter, mine's single stage catalyzed acrylic enamel. I'm also painting a 85 Toyota xcab for my daughter right now, with a totally different code, but it looks very similar as well...have your painter do a color card and match it to interior un (re) painted items such as the glove box interior.

but seriously....

here's one shot where it's about the cleanest it ever was. along with a couple of shots where you can see the white.

nuclearlemon- now that is a funny freaking response to my "anal" post. I had to laugh and show my wife. She thought it was funny.

My painter talked me into a modern paint with clear coat so that it can last longer and it matches the look of the truck posted by fyton2v and Chris Wade

thanks to all of you that chimed in to help out.

I think everything is in order. Still that muddy white 031 is funny.

Riddler: The 031 code is correct for that year. I too am undergoing resto on my 79. The color code on the tag is listed as 031. The color seems to differ a bit on area that have been exposed over the years and those that have'nt. The outside is a bit on the creamy to yellowish tint. The areas that were not exposed such as under the windsheild gasket were definately whiter. The bezel is a bit more on the gray scale. Here are a few pics of the before state with a close up out in the sun. Hope this helps in your project.
