Good morning,

when I got my J4 4years/25.000km ago, I did a big service, replaced all the oils, greases, fluids, etc. The maintenance history on a more then 30y old car is not reliable.

Yesterday I greased cardans, etc. Toyota wants me to repack the bearings in the hubs every 20.000km, which I thought is a quit short interval. WHen I did it the last time, the "old" grease looked yellow/green and in a very good shape.
I checked on of the hubs yesterday: dark grease inside. So I repacked all hubs. I used a dark blue type of grease back then. But the color turned really dark, it was hard to tell, that it was blue somewhen.

Now the thing: Is that normal? The preload on the bearings supposed to be right. The bearings itself looked good.
Maybe the preowner got this done right before I bought the vehicle. I thought, with the huge amount of grease in the hubs, it should last forever.

I don't go in the mud, driving hardly in the rain, etc. No real offroad at all, my truck has a easy going life with me.

IMHO you can't grease the u-joints often enough. I use a water proof stuff you can hardly wash off your hands with gasoline Mystic JT6. I think my knuckles took a stick and a half a side to fill up.

Take your grease, put a dab in the palm of your hand, now wash your hands with warm water - does your grease foam away?
Put a dap of grease on an anvil - swat it really hard with a hammer - does it just fly away and leave no trace it was there?
You will be surprised how many can't pass those tests.

The U-Joints gets lubricated often, mostly 2000-3000km and when I was in the mud.

I was a bit concerned about the wheel bearing.

I will be doing them again as soon as I source some speedy sleeve for the flats on the axle shaft. Two nice grooves were cut in the flats by the seals. It didn't get hubs until about 60,000 thus the wear.

I have the same issue on the rear right side. I already had little diff oil in the hub. I pushed the seal ring a bit deeper into the axle, I hope that works for now.
