Builds My New Project

A little detour that kept me from working on the pig lately. In my last job I had access to a mill and found that it was useful so I found one for myself. My wife isn't too hip on it taking up space in the garage.

I also got around to finishing my seat mounts and my leather bucket seats are now firmly mounted in place.

I found a Corvette pedal to match my Vortec engine and I managed to get it mounted. Bolted up with no modification and looks like it was meant to be there. One tab bolted to a column bolt and for the top mount I had to grind a bit and then weld a stud to the firewall.

Started work on the front fenders. Got one side mostly complete and ready to test fit the other. Good time in the garage today; I was in the mood.

My Lokar shifter was waiting for me yesterday so tonight I spent time fitting things. After I got this far I sat in the front seat dreaming about what this thing might be like to actually drive it.

I do the same thing, just don't let your Wife hear you making motor noises. :) You won't live it down, trust me.

Hunting season started so my garage time was shortened but I was able to fabricate a mounting for the fj60 emergency brake that goes with the axles. When I bought the axles and did the soa conversion I torched all the bracketry. I didn't think I needed them so as usual I had to rework.

NikP,

Question on your E-Brake. Is that where the stock 60 cable places the handle. Other words, did you shorten or lengthen the cable?

Are you putting in a console, between the seats?

I'm still looking at all the options, before cutting my hole for the handle.

That's where the stock cable puts it with some slack for suspension. It ends up right at the rear heater circle.

I'll probably have some type of console but not sure yet about the logistics. Even on the 60 the stock console works around the e-brake and there's plenty of room for whatever I can dream up.

I debated on the floor cut and then decided I was over analyzing things and pulled out the power tools! Worst case I'm welding up another hole in the floor (although this time I'm watching for fire from the Raptor liner )

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg It been a while since I've updated. I've been tinkering on a few things like body work. I know it's sacrilege but I cut holes in the front fenders to mount VW beetle turn signals since I've never been fond of the stock light the way they scream "hit me". I wanted something a bit more streamlined but couldn't find any good alternatives.

More pictures when I refit the fenders.

I also put my new sheet metal bender to work making mounts for the computer components.

I had VW blinkers on my 40, years ago. Looked like they belonged. What kind of bender did you buy. I've been looking at old finger brakes.

I wanted a finger brake but could swing the cost for what I would use it for so my wife bought me an Eastwood model for Christmas.

Need some opinions on the issue of turn signals and side marker lights.

I mounted my fenders so I could mock up the VW turn signals. I like the line of the turn signal but I'm wondering if the side marker light is now a bit out of place.

With the large side light on the turn signal, I don't think I need the marker and I'm not sure if they'll look good together.

I'm thinking about welding up the marker hole. Give me your thoughts....

Strictly my opinion.... I would leave the side marker lights in. One, they look good, not out of place with the VW blinkers and Two, you can always go back to the stock blinkers with the side lights, if you so choose.

I really like the VW look. You won't break those off. Had them on my 40, but I had the older ones.

I dig that look and have wanted to see since Ron suggested some time back.

Glad to see them installed as it solidifies......although I've a different, more heretical plan for mine.

Personally, I'm glad the '76 I'm planning this on doesn't have the side markers in the fender, because I'd be faced with similar and probably opt to delete, but Ron is right in his suggestion to leave them in there, just in case.

Killer post and pics!!

That makes the decision that much easier, because they, not only don't look out of place, look like they belong there.

Nice work, Nik and, once again, thanks Ron.
