Yep, got rid of the 1st gen mini (hilux here) and the van. Also sold a Mazda. Still 2 datsun 2wd rigs behind my garage next to the donor 60. Really low mileage on the oldest datsun, planning on having it as a rat diesel rod later on, it's the one with longest bed. My dad bought it new in 83, so it will probably stay. ;-)

finally... im getting something done on my beloved cruiser again! ;) gutted the insides now, knocking out old sound deadning plates, removing ALL non 24v wiring. FINALLY!
doing the inside rust job. but debating on wether to install new dynamat'ish product, or some kind of bedliner.
Would really just do a non carpet trick, wich will be hard if i go the dynamat route. or Cruisercrap, depending on what i can get my hands on.
What are my options, of what i cant see? Silence, but ready to dip in water and mud?
Also mashing up the old oem interiour colours, tan and brown, and will make most use of the tan in other parts, both internal and external surfaces.
RTT is on, similar to the CVT tents, havent tried the annex yet.
Removing alot of crap, lights etc, waiting for a new ome heavy, saving for tires.
Planning the aux battery setup, maybe i'll go a diffent route with an extra 24v bank, to simplify charging without loss, and running most accessories on 24v and a 12v converter for other misc.
just a few pix of the mess...

Now, there has been some progress.
Most of our spare time has gone into getting the rig ready for new adventures.
My girl is really helping out, now we're into the cruiser together.
So we gutted out all interior, pressure hosed everything, removed all non oem wire, cleaned engine bay, stripped axles, scraped frame, gutted rust.
Basically, we took it apart. Just not frame off. Regret that, after spending lots of time on my back.

Lots of gunk!

Cleaning out the interior, in freezing temperatures!!

Cleaning inside of frame, and a complete section right next to the muffler was all rotted out.
Thirtytwo years of old junk build up was in the frame!
It's now welded and looking good ;)

Ripped off the axles, they both needed a good cleaning and full service. EVERYTHING was worn out.

Cleaned, serviced, and painted. A happy axle!

Rear axle is in progress, brakes will be serviced when i tuck it underneath the rig again.

My GF is mounting the flip kit from Dave Gore.
Beefy and a perfect fit. New ome heavy springs.

looks good, always a good time getting it cleaned up and serviced...in preparation for another trip / for the future.

Just a comparison picture of the OEM setup with OME heavy, versus @lcwizard - Dave Gores U bolt flip kit.
it shaves off quite a bit, and raises the shock an inch or two. I'm really satisfied!
I was looking for this kind of picture before i bought it, so here it is:

Thanks, Elbert! Yes, definitely. We're actually planning a 4 week trip this summer.
So we're in quite a hurry, departure is mid July....
Have lots of mods planned, we'll see what happens.

I always enjoy others "prep for trip" threads, so i'll just continue with what we have done this far.

Wheels are getting new paint, and the beige color is scanned off the old dash from the donor cruiser.

The handbrake is painting most of the interior parts, cleaning what can be used from the donor, fixing stuff and doing magic to the tuffy! ;D

The fabric is from the donors seat, padded and niice!

Fabbing new mounts for delicious seats. Did not find any to match the new color scheme, but comfort comes first. Went to the wrecker to get these. Sweet!
Lower dash is now also painted! (PO did put in a grey lower dash, and painted the upper black, it all had to go)

Don't mind the chisel and axe ;)

Patching in some missing pieces, not done yet.
Also, i present to you: THE FRESH FRAME!

Will make some rubber flaps to cover the gap.

Yeah, been quite busy, done tons of boring stuff that is not listed here.
Will make sure everything mechanical is in order, and the inside is being upgraded, but I'll try to keep the gadgets out of sight.
Been having a steady progression the last months, not much social life…

Considering putting in a separate 12v alt and battery for camping and fridge.
I just feel like leaving the 24v system stock, and put no extra load on it.
Looking for new gauges in 24v,but seems like I'll have to settle for 12v on them, and maybe change bulbs to 24v.
Anyone who has a lead on which 1wire 12v alt I can use? Will have to build a mount anyway.

The body is in rough shape, but I'll patch it up, and get it weatherproof.
There is just not time enough for bodywork.
If I can afford it, the front windshield will be replaced.

Budget and time is getting low, but I'll try to find a way to get the last pieces put together.

Fridge is a problem… my old coleman just don't cut it anymore, so I'm searching for a 2nd hand engel or something.

Slowly getting more stuff done.
Inner fenders get some splash-proofing, thanks to the handbrake...
She doesn't like to be called that, but she'll get used to it ;)

Air filter box had to be modded, to fit the new location, hooked up to the snorkel.
New feets, and managed to use the old hole for the inlet, just flipped the bend, shaped it to point more up, hooks directly to the snorkel on a 80-70mm silicone straight reducer. tight fit, but gets the filter in the right location.

This means i need to relocate the preshaped washer fluid tank... thinking of finding another tank, not so oddly shaped. Made three new mounts for the filter box, and moved on to the pre-turbo tubing.
2014-06-17 21.34.02.webp

I really wanted to do something else, not having the crossover pipe 2" above the exhaust, there is just no more room to move it back and over the booster. And i got by with the parts i had of stainless and bends. Bent up a little support bracket that supports the end of the long tube, bolts to the booster.
I could have gone diagonally across the engine, but that would mean blocking the easy access to the oil cap, and the dipstick. I'll wrap the exhaust and inlet pipe with shielding tape, hoping not to heat the inlet pipe too much. Maybe i'll add a scoop direcly above the turbo, and make some kind of shield, but not sure if i can find time before departure.

I still need to make some more room for the rear 2" of the batteries, they are turned 90* to allow the IC tubes to pass between the rad and the batteries.

I also changed the fuel diaphragm in the ip, which was full of oil... and i replaced the primer pump and fuel filter, while down there in the dirty...

Love that idea with the air cleaner up there near the firewall. Make sure to post up what you do for the washer bottle.

got some insulation laid down in the interior, rotted floor was patched up. bailey channels on front windows are spanking new and in place.
Not long before i can do the final electrics and button up the interior.

Handbrake is figuring out the new handbrake cable.

And the rear axle is ready to enter its final destination, here she's bolting in the amazing flip kit. Love that s***!

Within the next few days the engine bay should be complete again, just waiting for the EGT probe and some misc wiring.
Cant find the time and cash to do a 2nd 12v alternator now, as i really should move on to making the rear swing out tire carrier.
and weld in the other rear fender. and fix the exhaust. and do the aux battery wiring. and the brake lines. and the clutch master. and the rtt slider. and the rest of it.

Yup, i've dreamed of that location for too long, was just a tad lazy to get it done.
Will either have to find another toyota tank and swap the 24v pump over, or a completely different tank and run it on 12v.

I am still not perfectly happy with the location of the tube over the exhaust, but i'll figure it out when i get it running and can measure temps.
Will have to plunge in the oil catch tank into that short section somehow, sometime.

By "tube running over the exhaust" you mean the turbo's intake, right? If you flip that 180* up front then the tube leading back could be over the valve cover, then it wouldn't be over the exhaust.

yep, i could have done that, but it would be in the way of the oil cap and directly above the dipstick.
after i get the ic and radiator in, i can see how much room i have in the front, maybe i can extend it forward from the turbo.
But i cannot move the outlet of the filterbox more than 10* degrees clockwise, then it will collide with intake.
If i pass the intake, it is too close to the hood... blah.

I hear you there man. I'm still trying to figure out what the best intake setup would be for my rig without eating up all of the available underhood room on the passenger side.

Yeah, its hard with the turbo mounted high... and a front ic...
When all is in, i guess there is no more room. makes wrenching a pita. so im at least trying to make things easy to disassemble, welding nuts and using 12mm heads on most stuff.

Monday was the worst day in my life. While i was at work, the whole garage and the beloved sixty burnt to the ground. Barely saved the house, everybody lived.
There's nothing left. And no insurance will cover it. Just the building. A family member is gone.

Will just add the few last mods i did the days before the fire.

Pieced together the engine bay, got the washer fluid tank mounted in the only place available.
Got the filter box painted and mounted to the snorkel with new filter.
2014-06-28 20.48.22.webp

Assembled the new fan clutch and blades, new water pump, belts and mounted the rad overflow tank.
Everything fitted in nice. (not final picture)

Drilled and tapped the manifold for the egt probe and a AutoMeter pyro gauge.
