I vote corrosion in bulb holder or bad ground. Then again light bulbs aren't made as good as they were - filament too thin and poor quality for the metal composition and I doubt they use a getter any more to take out the oxygen.
I thought of that too today - I did clean them last year - used Deoxit too - that did wonders. Will get into that.

Thx

Been helping out with the other Rigs going in a couple weeks.

Removed side windows on this one. One side the PO used window weld, the other was mastic. Window weld sucks to cut though/remove. Had luck clean the frame today of the mastic window with mineral spirits/W40D.

The top is fiberglass so being careful not to scratch/gouge (especially since not my Rig).

@Ol Yeller … in my opinion, I like the flares. I had them on my ‘74 and they are on my ‘75. The tub is un-cut and the tires are just a hair outside the body so it keeps the sides cleaner. I did re-install them with black pop rivets…. Probably a sharpie would accomplish that same effect
prior to me, someone sprayed the exposed surface under the flare with flat black. It did make it look like the metal was gone but the paint under that spray is perfectly un-touched…That paint spray came off easily with a little acetone

Correct - I made Yellr do the Triple Lindy

On that side -

Both were working the day before I hooked the new BT up. Not saying that they are related - circuits are different - Going to do some more investigation between now and launch date.

Thanks about the brake switch - will look at that. Would be sweet if that simple.
My brake lights were staying on. If I pulled the brake pedal by hand toward the switch they would go off. Adjusted the switch and all good.

Even with hacked quarters I prefer no flares. Had some on a 40 with hacked quarters. Destroyed one on a rock, replaced them, happened again. After that I just cleaned up the openings as best I could and called it good.

Hacked quarters are what started me down the path of a full blown purist restoration. Be careful. hahaha....

That being said...you could re-lip the rear quarters and spray just the quarters (have two quarts of 532 color matched and mixed up) and you'd be off to the races. It isn't actually that bad of a repair.

For me, fender flares ruin the boxy utilitarian lines of an FJ40. No, 40's are not smooth and sexy like a 250 GTO...but where they lack in Italian sex appeal, they more than make up for with their character, soul and relentless companionship. To me, fender flares hit the "minus key", probably like Chewbacca wearing a tutu would. Just my .02!

The flares on my truck are holding me back from ripping it down to its base element and starting from the ground up. The PO did a lot of good things on my rig but must have been snorting gasoline when he cut the fenders.

B- I thought they were uncut... Flare away good sir!

unsolicited opinion: flare-less, original fender cut outs. those lines make me very happy.

then we're back to fix your tub with new skins/rear seal/every hole and rust patch we can find vs. who's got the best replacement tub?

it's like finding parts for the rear window frames.. how original does it need to be to make you happy?

Appreciate the comments Dallas.

(Love your build thread). Seems I remember you posting the paint you had made up when you redid your side members or something.

Don’t forget the rear sill that is rusted (well the tiny bits that remain are rusted)

Got new one waiting for the day.

Maybe we had the same PO?

Maybe we had the same PO?
Dr. Norman Clausen of Friendswood, TX? (RIP).

He really did do a lot of fantastic things to the truck, to be fair.

yeah, yeah, yeah. i was gonna mention that too. 8^p

Doing some small odds and end when I not lending a hand to get though big stuff. On small item is the lock for the popout window. First is this stripped out screw - was difficult to remove - not just strip - but then with loctite on top.

here is the replacement on top and the old broken latch below - I was thinking about the colors - and the interior was grey for roll bars etc (so that color will work long term).

Installed with the new OEM screws.

With that done I can get that side roll bar in and then the seat.

Next up.

Here it is in the steps of install..

Other side.

Took the old ones off and final..

Biggest issue with install was the white bushing was in a separate packaging and I missed that with the first mirror install and had to go back.

Review = I love these things. I can actually see traffic behind me. I am kicking myself as I've had these over a year and never got around to it. One of the best things I've done to Yellr this year..

When I had my electical event back in June. Fried the radio circuit - Got a cheap BT replacemet on the Amazon Prime deal for 11 bucks. Made connectors, etc. Nothing. Did continuity check and nothing on the end where it plug in but could see power was getting into the connectors. So ordered 5 mm x 2.1 mm connector from Amazon and wired that one up with the connector. Bam - got blue tooth music going.

IMG_3371.webp

Old one on left - cheap one on right. User review - the 11 buck deal is a million times better than then old one. I can actually turn the music up and hear it no matter the speed on the interstate. Soooooo enjoyable to have tunes. Especially with Solid Axle Summit coming up. Wheels up Friday. Made a new punch list - will see what really gets done. Main thing at this point is Oil Change/Rotate tires - check fluid levels and pack. If I get other stuff done, bonus at this point. Been helping on Rus's - pulled the Radiator yesterday - cleaning and flushing out today some and a little install progress. Have AC to install on his too - not sure how much if any "help" (I like to inflate my presence) he needs with that. But many hands to get it all done.

Here is a sample issue @solomrus and I had with the 1HZ engine last night. Find the engine block drain. We knew it is on driver side of the engine.

IMG_3365 2.webp

This is a close up of the area it should be - and long story short. the PO removed the drain and just stuck a 14 mm bolt in and blended with all the other bolts.

Removing the bolt include the chant... "please don't strip the threads. please don't break.." repeat until bolt out. Today, installed the rest of the roll bar and rear jump seat and headed to Omaha. Helped Rus with flushing the system, cleaning surfaces so new water pump/t-stat, and timing belt can go on.

Edit - found a pic of the bolt for the engine block drain... circled in red.

Glad to read about your Bluetooth amp. I have that same one in a box on the floor of my 40 to wire in once I finish the power windows. I paid $15…you saved over 25%
