Built me a transmission / transfer case jack adaptor this morning. All out of scrap I had laying around. You can't see it but at the bottom I ground down (to the right angle) a old 7/8 deep socket and welded it to the bottom plate. That locates it into the floor jack (once you remove the pad) I know some guys like to bolt the engine trans and transfer together but My engine hoist has to be fully extended to reach and I did not feel safe hanging another few hundred pounds on the end of it. And I know I could have pulled the trans cover and used my hoist But I have already rhino lined my interior and I did not want to scrape all of that off and then deal with possibly rusted/ broken bolts ect ect. And there is a method to my madness. I figured I will have to test fit and remove it all a few times to get everything to fit how I want it to. With cutting my cover for the shifters, fitting everything, checking clearances and fabing up a mount for my parking brake caliper hopefully on top to keep it away from rocks an mud. Making a new crossmember. ect ect. Anyway that's why I did what I did. Total cost $0.00 well ok a few bucks for welding wire.

Well that worked out pretty slick. I got the trans&T/C in. Good news is it even clears my factory rear cross member!! I had read another thread where he was installing a 2f and split case out of a 60 just like I am and he had to cut his and move it back. But he was also using a drum for his parking brake. With the disc, I think I lucked out.

Amen! I'm about a year away from buying a house. 2 car garage is a requirement! Right now I'm working out of a borrowed corrugated steel barn with a dirt floor. Steel is not a good insulator!

Keep it going - really enjoying all the fab work you're doing to modernize your 40. Getting lots of ideas!
 
Today I did the final installation of the trans & T/C. Got the holes cut and shifters installed. I notched the body just above the t/c high/low shifter lever. And where the clutch fork area is. Nothing major just made a little room. The trans shifter was angled towards the rear and sits a little back from a stock fj40 location. So it would just touch the seat when it was in 2nd & 4 th. So I took the shifter out. Clamped it in the vice, slid a 4' pipe over it and bent it up more. Clears fine now! Installed the exhaust and intake. I'm kinda proud of my alt adjusting bracket. I needed the space on top where the stock 2F alt bolted for my 100A onboard welding alternator. So I did some thinking and got a little lucky. I was able to use the F lower alt bracket bolted right up to my 2F. And the top mount lined up perfect with the bottom of the p/s pump bracket. (Where the old air pump adjuster bolted) so I blew a slotted hole in it with the plasma cutter and it's now my alt mount. Pretty slick and the belt lines up great! It also solved my belt tensioner problem due to removing the air pump.

I'm using a externally regulated 100A Ford alternator. A little rewiring and it turns into a on board stick welder and 110V power source. To run brushed power tools like drills, grinders ect. It will also run 110v lights. So if I'm on the trail and break something I can weld it up. Google alternator welder and you will see.

I will make a box to house all the wires with quick connect welding leads. And a 110v outlet, switch ect. The 100A ford alt I bought is BIG so I needed the room up top to make a mount for it. I will post pics when I do.

Thanks guys. Not much to show on the mount. It's ugly but it got the job done. Just made from scrap. I did not cut or drill anything. That square chunk missing out of the rear is from what is now my trailer hitch that I made a while back.

And you just bolted that to your regular floor jack right ?

I made one for lifting out axle and it worked well.

Slow day at work today. I was able to fully rebuild my F carb. Since the 2f carb will not fit with my brake booster in the way. I used some rubbing compound to clean up the sight glass and it worked great! It was all milky and not very see through before. I also drilled and installed a ported vacuum port to hook my elec. dissy to.
I just robbed a vacuum port off a old carb I had. I drilled a small hole all the way through to just above the throttle plate. Then drilled a larger hole only about half way through and tapped the port in.

Got the kids fed, homework done and put to bed. Then snuck out to the garage and made some mounting brackets for my onboard welder. I modified the factory lower alternator mount. As well as made a new lower bracket. I had to extend the factory upper adjuster mount 2" to work with the larger alt. Also had to extend the adjuster screw bracket thing.

Thank you. I spend more time on it than I should. But most of it's in the middle of the night....... The last few months I have been suffering from insomnia :-( I will wake up at 2 or 3 am and not be able to go back to sleep. So I have 5-6 hours every morning before work to tinker. Anyway. This morning at 3 am..... I was back in the garage. I did the final installation of the onboard welder. :) yea it has belts! I finished up the clutch line. My slave was on the drivers side with the F motor and it's on the passenger side with the 2F. My bell housing only had the hole for the fork on one side so I had to run a new hard line over to the passenger side. Turned out good. Made a aluminum line bracket. Bled the line and made a new pushrod and adjusted the clutch.

I also run a F carb on the 2F - works fine
 
Today I did lots of little stuff. Made a bracket for my new braided stainless throttle cable and attached it to the carb. The f motor had Many different throttle linkage rods. All where 50 years old and worn out. And one that bolted to the block. The 2f does not have that hole in the block. So I figured a cable system would be the best solution. I still have to figure out the gas pedal end.

Also cleaned, painted & Installed the heater control valve off the parts car 60. My 40 had a universal aftermarket heater in it previously. With no control valve. I took that out and found a factory heater box and ducting from a 1965 FJ40 on eBay :) cleaned it up painted and installed it. Ran all new heater hoses. Installed the fan clutch. Installed the radiator. That was a tight fit with the steering gear box but it fit. Found new upper and lower hoses that matched up. I used the metal t pipe off the 60 on the lower hose.

Installed the fuel line. Put on my new shifter knob and TEQ oil cap I got from the Toyota dealer. Almost ready to fire it up and break in the cam. :):):)
