I am looking for exhaust options that will not make my FJ60 sound like a Rice Rocket.

I have been listening to sound clips on Youtube and nothing sounds good to me. Flowmaster, Dynomax, Magnaflow all sound like a honda civic rice rocket when they rev up. I've heard good things about Borla, but I just need some 1st hand experience here before jumping into my purchase decision.

So A few different questions.

1st - What muffler to run without the annoying rice rocket sound?
2nd - Would removing the cat eliminate that horrible sound?
3rd - Would different size dimension mufflers play a role in sound?
4th - Would moving the placement of the muffler closer to the front of the vehicle change the sound?

Yes I know put a V8 in it. One day :)...... But for now just looking for a nice sound for the hills; not the the sound set of Fast & Furious.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

What really changes the sound for the better is a 2.5"+ exhaust. I'm running a Magnaflow and it grows, this is on a 3F-E

I run a magnaflow as well behind a warm 2FE. It's borderline abnoxious loud, but not ricer at all. It growls to 2500 and barks above that.

Can you by chance tell me what model Magnaflow you are running. I should of asked for model type in my original post i suppose.

Summit fully welded muffler here. 2.5" In/Out. Running Catco Cat. Also 2.5"

I don't think it sounds ricey. My exhaust is pretty tame in my book.

Eliminating the cat would make it louder, wouldn't it? That's what F-body guys and Mustang guys do for noise, rip out the cats.

I've got some vids on my YouTube channel. Linked on my profile I'm pretty sure. Sounds different with the Aisan carb back on now though.

Not sure. 2.5" inlet and outlet with a straight-through design. Basically a glass pack with an oval x-section.

I have a man a fre header no cat and a 2 chamber Flowmaster and it's a love hate relationship. I've gotten quite a few people asking if it's a v8 at idle, however, the loud annoying banshee wail kicks in at 2500rpms which I hate. Luckily I rarely take it above 2500. It drones a bit but not over the top annoying.

2 chamber flowmaster will resonate.. That's a direct result of the muffler.

1: I have a Flowmaster Super44 on mine and its just about perfect for me. No really noticeable drone on the highway, but just the right tone between 1,800 and 2,300. Enough grunt to let me hear whats going on, but not so much that it pisses off the neighbors.

When watching YouTube videos, keep in mind that most camera's microphones do not pick up sound very well, and even the good ones usually struggle to deliver a perfect replication. (what im saying is that your best bet is to meet up with some other landcruiser owners and see what sounds the best on theirs)

2: Removing the cat will increase the raspy-ness.

Never have liked the Magnaflow in my custom exhaust that was done numerous years ago. It drones and vibrates the vehicle. It's annoying to me.
I'd like to re-fit a stock muffler to my set up, not sure how that round can would fit under there now.

dynamax welded.
2.5" on the 75, no cat. growls and barky can be loud.
2" on the 87 gutted cat. quiet but has a manly tone under load.
both have headers and webers.

I have a new OEM Toyota cat back exhaust on my 87 FJ-60. I think it sounds great, and the quality is top notch.

And really restrictive..

Apples to oranges, but I have two magnaflows on my DD and they will really drone at certain RPMs. I'll actually change my speed on the highway sometimes just to avoid the noise.

And please don't remove your cat. If anything, having it there will make the truck less "ricey" and certainly less annoying and stinky.
