Makes sense, that's probably what I will end up doing.
Where did you grow up in Jersey?
If I visit Alaska I'll bring you some pork roll.
We should continue this conversation in PM's or on my build thread, Johnny has enough going on as it is.

Sorry about the hijack Johnny.

Hey Johnny!!!! sorry:flipoff2:

Lookin Good.

So you opted to pull the engine and drivetrain out first, any reason in particular for doing that?
When I do mine I was planning on pulling the body off first and leaving the drivetrain attached to the frame.

I wonder which way is easier?

We pulled the drivetrain first because of a couple of reasons, none of which really have to do with the actual work to be done. Nick blew up the steering arm on his runner and it's at a different shop getting repaired. That opened up the other bay of the barn, which we didn't think would be available to host a drivetrain. The new frame still needs some work and steel, which I'm held up on getting right now. It was easy for me to disconnect everything from the motor, so that's what we got done! I tell you what though, it was a cake walk taking it out with the core support removed.

You and Tom are hilarious by the way

Holy crap dude.
I just pulled a motor the same day as you....but I used the 20 ton overhead crane and then hung it from a skytrack lift!!!!!
I like the bob cat though. Im splappin a 5.3 vortec in a friends 60. i'll send you pic or two.....glad to see you diggin in deep here Johnny!!!!

Send the pics over man! I love pictures of engine swaps:D It feels good to get this involved in a project. Feels like I'll have a real wheeling rig after this is done:grinpimp:

Getting there Johnny. Just a thought..... For what you are paying per ounce in spray bomb cans you can buy a decent little top feed jamb gun and buy the paint in quarts. The paint goes a hell of a lot farther that way. Nor nearly the over spray that you get with the spray bombs. I have a jamb gun that I bought at Lowes about 4 years ago for $40 something and it continues to work well today.

I thought about that, but I don't have a compressor big enough to run a spray gun. That would exponentially add to the cost of the gun setup. If I had a nice, big compressor, that's what I would have done, but oh well. That's what my house in NC is going to be for:grinpimp:

Ironically, the old frame does not look that bad from the head on shot.

That tilting bucket and strap has to be the best ever engine puller--good use of what you had available.

Looking forward to more.

Let's see...Swap the suspension and axles, install old body, install motor and hook up. It should go fast.

Strong work.

Yeah, the front of the frame isn't bad because it's been coated in engine oil for so long:lol:

Exactly what I'm thinking Drew, the rest should go fast.

The bucket and strap tilt worked GREAT, much better than I thought it would. Being able to tilt the bucket made taking the tranny crossmember off really easy. One cool thing about using a strap to lift the drivetrain is that with the strap in between the bell housing and back of the oil pan, the whole shebang was pretty close to balanced. When we turned the bobcat, the drivetrain tilted back a hair and the front strap came off because it was unloaded, which scared the s*** out of me because we only looped the strap around the bucket since it was hooked on both ends. The whole thing just stayed in the air, almost perfectly balanced.

Thanks for the support everyone. Stay tuned!

Lots of work done this weekend. Nick, thank you again for the awesome shop and your help on this project.

I'll let the pictures do most of the talking. To do list is:
  • Cut off transmission mounts and weld to new frame
  • Bolt drivetrain and driveshafts up (tranny held up with ratchet straps)
  • Drop body on new frame
  • Hook up everything else

One thing that isn't pictured well is the rear frame section that I plated in. Used 3/16" plate, came out pretty good. Note to anyone reading, using a 10% duty cycle welder is the most frustrating effing thing on the planet:bang:

Also, that's the color the frame is going to be. The topcoat I picked up ended up being the same shade as the primer. Looks great to me:D

Oh my hell Johnny.
I thought you were just painting the front of the frame.
Nice work. i am excited for you man! Thats gunna be sweet. That frame looks bad ass with just tires and motor on it. Lookin good bro!

Nah, figured I'd do it right since I have awesome access to the whole thing right now. I love the way it looks too. Nick thinks I should scrap the body and weld some tube right to the frame, it'd be a sweet buggy!

Thanks for the support Tom!

Looks serious now. Very nice.

Now get that thing out here on the West Coast.

That's good progress!

Thanks Drew! Rubithon 2012, that's my goal. After this phase is done the body is up next. Should look completely different by the time I get out there.

Looking good, everything seems to be going pretty smoothly.
I'm definitely going to hit you up for a checklist of things to take apart when pulling the engine/trans/tcase.

by the way........

did you drink all those empty Kegs under your rig?

 No, Nick had them laying around in the back of the barn.

Thanks again for the support guys!
