Your Charcoal canister, if you haven't resolved yet, I think is diagrammed in one of the toyota manuals, maybe the emissions manual...

On my '74 one of the hard lines just disappears into the frame rail to vent to the atmosphere. Later models they vent into the air filter housing. If I understand the charcoal is supposed to absorb hydrocarbons and the "gassy" smell from the tank venting.

And heater hoses running into something with an AC plug would be an engine heater, from Montana, where it's often well below 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and oil get thick.... Plug it in to warm it up for 20/30/60 minutes before starting. (Having grown up in Alaska, joining ih8mud has shocked me on how many people don't understand what these are for...)

I found the hole where the charcoal vent tube is routed through the fire wall and stuck it through after @fjc-man pointed me in the right direction.
Yeah I figured the plug going into the heater hose line must’ve been some sort of pre heater for frigid climates. Will probably do a delete on that when I change all the hoses which is on the honey do list.
I received the new oem fuel pump from @ToyotaMatt and got that installed. It took me longer to scrape off the old gasket than to install it and came with new bolts and gasket. I ordered a new Toyota gas tank from the dealer today and will pick it up tomorrow. I will install it this weekend. It was $$$ but I don’t want to keep guessing on the condition of the old tank and will try to ospho and clean the old one up as a spare. I also didn’t want a poly tank as I’ve heard nightmares about leaks and fittings on non Toyota tanks. All in I will have replaced the entire fuel system and hoses on Montina so shouldn’t have any worries after the new tank install. I need to get it up and running before I dive any deeper into the blue plate ‘79.
The ‘79 has no keys at all so will need to figure out whether I can just get a new key set or will I have to get a complete lock set with new keys like @ToyotaMatt sells on his sight. I don’t have the little key number tag for reference. For now it’s soaking down the cylinders with the Marvin’s mystery oil.

When I first got mine I remember it kinda smelled like gas all the time, especially inside. Even after removing the top it kinda had that smell. And it had a clear plastic filter that looked like it had seen some crap in the past but wasn't really clogged or anything big in it, but right under the passenger seat.

And the gauge didn't work, so I finally decided to pull the sender... (I seats mounted to the roll cage, and that all had to come out to get at the tank...)

I was surprised to find a plastic / poly something tank. The PO had gooped up every hose and the sending mount surface with mass RTV all over everything. And left the separator sitting on top of the tank, under the cover, very incorrectly plumbed. Looked at a few diagrams, thought about how gravity worked, cleaned everything up and put it back together with the separator mounted sort of near where it's original place and plumbed as documented, all new lines and clamps, new gasket on the separator and no RTV on anything.... Only one filter and put that in front of the carb...

It's worked great every since, and no smells. Make sure you get the separator properly plumbed to the tank and the charcoal canister. I think it's there's an emissions manual, search a bit and you can find the pdf, that shows how to connect everything, you will want to make sure it's all properly connected to vent without stinking everything up.

You can find your key code on the passenger door lock cylinder. Did you disconnect your 30 amp ammeter when you installed the 50 amp alternator? If not, you may fry your 30amp gauge if the alt can actually put out 50 amps.
I’ll take a look at the passenger cylinder, thanks for that info. I haven’t disconnected the ammeter. I’ll have to do that then.

I looked at the tank and hoses and they look in order and original. I’ll dig into it more when I replace the tank, thanks.

New tank arrived at the dealer this morning. Also had to stop at Asahi Japanese Steak house while I was in Tifton for the fish plate. Will hopefully have the tank in by beer thirty today.

Thoughts and prayers go out to @slow95z for him and his boys. May God bless you and your family. She’s in a better place now.

Painted new Toyota tank. Old tank was in bad shape as well as sending unit. Have a new one coming from cool cruisers of Texas as well as new plug wires. I replaced all fuel hoses with heavy duty usa made fuel line.

Ospho’d the spare wheel. Will primer and paint dune beige. Bought a Napa battery tray and hold down kit. Had some rubber matting from Lowes and cut to fit for the tray liner. New Napa legend battery.

Installed the new Toyota tank. Cleaned up the original sending unit. It actually still works when I hot wired it outside the tank. I used throttle body cleaner and a wire brush. I’m still waiting on the aftermarket unit from CCOT to come in and will use that one. The dogs love hanging out in the cruiser while I work on it.

Painted the spare rim and the battery tray. I used Rustoleum etching primer and their gloss nardo gray paint (2 coats) which was close to the factory color. Battery tray was stripped, ospho’d, primed and painted with rustoleum gloss black. It had a lot of rust build up. Also using rubber undercoating on the tray. I’m still waiting on the new sending unit so I can fire Montina up since the new gas tank install.

Temporary solution to the ripped seats, ordered a few roles of stick on vinyl to make some ghetto seat covers. I was actually impressed with the product, not my upholstery skills.

Took Montina out for a spin around the block for the first time since I got her. She did surprisingly well. No more stalling with the new oem gas tank, fuel pump, and fuel lines. See if you can spot the deer in the third pic. It’s rut season here and a nice sized buck ran out in front of me and wasn’t bothered by the engine. I even hit the horn and he wasn’t spooked. He had something better on his mind, lol.
She does have a significant exhaust leak from the header. Will need to replace the exhaust manifold gasket soon. Anyone have any suggestions of what brand to use with headers?
