I found the hole where the charcoal vent tube is routed through the fire wall and stuck it through after @fjc-man pointed me in the right direction.Your Charcoal canister, if you haven't resolved yet, I think is diagrammed in one of the toyota manuals, maybe the emissions manual...
On my '74 one of the hard lines just disappears into the frame rail to vent to the atmosphere. Later models they vent into the air filter housing. If I understand the charcoal is supposed to absorb hydrocarbons and the "gassy" smell from the tank venting.
And heater hoses running into something with an AC plug would be an engine heater, from Montana, where it's often well below 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and oil get thick.... Plug it in to warm it up for 20/30/60 minutes before starting. (Having grown up in Alaska, joining ih8mud has shocked me on how many people don't understand what these are for...)
When I first got mine I remember it kinda smelled like gas all the time, especially inside. Even after removing the top it kinda had that smell. And it had a clear plastic filter that looked like it had seen some crap in the past but wasn't really clogged or anything big in it, but right under the passenger seat.I ordered a new Toyota gas tank from the dealer today and will pick it up tomorrow. I will install it this weekend. It was $$$ but I don’t want to keep guessing on the condition of the old tank and will try to ospho and clean the old one up as a spare. I also didn’t want a poly tank as I’ve heard nightmares about leaks and fittings on non Toyota tanks. All in I will have replaced the entire fuel system and hoses on Montina so shouldn’t have any worries after the new tank install.
I’ll take a look at the passenger cylinder, thanks for that info. I haven’t disconnected the ammeter. I’ll have to do that then. You can find your key code on the passenger door lock cylinder. Did you disconnect your 30 amp ammeter when you installed the 50 amp alternator? If not, you may fry your 30amp gauge if the alt can actually put out 50 amps.
I looked at the tank and hoses and they look in order and original. I’ll dig into it more when I replace the tank, thanks. When I first got mine I remember it kinda smelled like gas all the time, especially inside. Even after removing the top it kinda had that smell. And it had a clear plastic filter that looked like it had seen some crap in the past but wasn't really clogged or anything big in it, but right under the passenger seat.
And the gauge didn't work, so I finally decided to pull the sender... (I seats mounted to the roll cage, and that all had to come out to get at the tank...)
I was surprised to find a plastic / poly something tank. The PO had gooped up every hose and the sending mount surface with mass RTV all over everything. And left the separator sitting on top of the tank, under the cover, very incorrectly plumbed. Looked at a few diagrams, thought about how gravity worked, cleaned everything up and put it back together with the separator mounted sort of near where it's original place and plumbed as documented, all new lines and clamps, new gasket on the separator and no RTV on anything.... Only one filter and put that in front of the carb...
It's worked great every since, and no smells. Make sure you get the separator properly plumbed to the tank and the charcoal canister. I think it's there's an emissions manual, search a bit and you can find the pdf, that shows how to connect everything, you will want to make sure it's all properly connected to vent without stinking everything up.
