Decided to pull the trigger on a suspension system for the oldgrey60. Read too many threads and talked to way too many people. Getting a high quality articulating SUA suspension always intrigued me. Yes, I did consider SOA but not now. The 60 is still a daily driver and better half likes to drive it. Plus still have my 69' FJ40 to play with if serious wheeling is required. Since Dave (4+) and Al and Steve at Man-a-Fre came up with what I feel is a great SUA designed system, what the hell. You can spend a lifetime debating all the pros and cons of all systems, all that does is take time away from wheeling my cruisers.

So I told a few people that I would post the complete build up from start to finish and keep you all posted of the trials and tribulations of the build as well as the evaluation of the finished product, drive characteristics and last of all my final opinions. This hopefully helps and give and unbiased opinion of the system and it's performance.

To give you all a background. Original owner of a mostly stock 87' FJ60. on this build I am installing Mojave 4" Suspension Kit W/4+Plus Front Shackle Reversal, Front & Rear U-BOLT Flip, Mojave 60 Series leaf springs, Bilstein 5125 shocks, Ford shock towers, OME steering dampener, Polyurethane bushings, Extended front sway bar link assemblies (not sure I will re-install sway bar), SS Extended brake lines frame to axle, center bolt spacers, greasable spring pins, greasable anti-inversion shackles. Steel 4* Shims (I S*@T canned the aluminum ones in kit), Oh yea, and a new radiator since I got to get to the front frame horns for welding the gussets anyway and my radiator is leaking from cracks in the tank.

After the install, I will evaluate articulation to see if front DL, High Steer and bump stop modifications are necessary. Tires and wheels are up for discussion. tempted to go with 33"x9.50's for maximum travel, but will entertain thoughts on that. Looks are secondary to performance. Plus the larger I go then I need to open the diffs for new ring & pinions then I might as well install lockers on and on and on... I'm trying to maintain costs a little on this build. That's stuff can come later. I will post pics soon. Just waiting on my steel front axel shims to arrive.

Hope this will help those that are on the fence and considering this spring kit, besides someone has to be a guinea pig. I will post lots of pics. Stay tuned.

Subscribed. I'm forced to live vicariously through everyone else's build threads.

I understand. I had to save my lunch money for a long time plus get permission from my project manager :)

Subscribed also , I have been reading the Family Haulin thread ,, I'm amazed at the work that Boots / Mike did on the ground and outside.. I read his welder was a 110 volt flux core ,, WoW..Anyhoos , ill post a pix of my outside area.

Mine is to start in 1 more month, buying right now ..

I am in the process also , Plus did get a similar suspension kit from MAF.

Thinking of going this way instead of SOA. Any idea if it would work with the weight of a 40 gallon LR fuel tank?

Started Today Post Pics

Well, still waiting for the 4* steel shims to arrive, but went ahead a started the tear down so I can gain access and do some cleaning. Off with front grill assembly, radiator and removal of front bumper brackets. All easy, steady as she goes. Will lift frame remove wheels and start tear down of front hangers, springs and shackles tomorrow . Hopefully I got the pic posting figured out. Will keep posting pics.

Hey,

On your gauges (where the radio use to be) what did you use for the material there? Assume those are 2 1/16inch size? Please let me know the material you used and what you used to cut the holes... Looks like some type of plastic material?...

Thanks, Elbert

Albert, I used 3/16" 6061 T-6 aluminum sheet stock and bevel cut/ sanded it to fit just large enough to bind against the the OD of the opening. Cut the holes for the gauges and sprayed it with can truck bed liner spray I got from Pep Boys. I used screws that fit the stock radio mounting brackets/ ears and location. Makes a nice clean factory look and could be returned to stock, did not damage any mounting the stock radio would use. It's light and strong will not buckle or rattle when you're wheeling.

My radio is sitting in my console and I have a small piece of aluminum sheet that I got from Lowes or somewhere that's just a filler for now. I want to install my aftermarket temp and oil pressure gauage in the same manner as you have. IN my case I'm not concerned about going back to stock as I've made to many changes to worry about that. Just looking for a clean functional setup..

Thanks..
