With 2 days left for us to work on the cruiser we still have some work left to do, the cluctch is almost all done and the diff is still out, but we should be able to make it with some time to spare.

That's how she is sitting as of an hour ago
009-14.jpg

Thats the housing ready to be bolted back in
010-10.jpg

That's the new bracing on the bottom, there will be another one on top but it will get welded when the housing goes back in to get the right position to mount the shock
011-10.jpg

I had the spring perches made up longer this time around, this should help stop the axle wrap I was getting. I also did something different with the diff brace, should hold up.

003-31.jpg

This is the axle extension on the short side, this was done so I didn't have notch the housing to fit a spring perch

Here's some of the transport truck too, it was a pantec but we took it off and made a head board, ramps and fixed some side rails

Nice work mate ,
Is that a 60 front diff you used

Cool looking mwb mate, just out of curiosity have ya hit anything hard with your front bars yet? They look cool but the angles worry me a bit? They look like they would bend up or down reasonably easily?
Wish it was warmer over in NZ or Id have cut the roof off my mwb instead of making it a single cab:rolleyes:

Nice work! Why need to extend the diff housing?? Is it longer housing tends to bend easily. 60 diff is considered wide for 70. Housing extended, Shaft inside the housing??? Extended the shaft???:confused::confused:

Thanks mate, haven't hit anything yet but I think it will take a fair old nudge to get them to move, the two braces on each side should provide bracing to stop the corners pushing up too easily, either way its better than not having anything.

Thanks mate,I have never heard of a 60 series diff being considered too wide, the more width I have got the better, considering what I'm doing with the cruiser.I have added much more bracing than last time, so if it bends again I'll have to start considering a custom housing. The extension is so I don't have to notch the short side perch into the diff pumpkin, if you do a bit of a search you will see what I mean. I had two shafts sent over from longfields, one a standard long side from a 60 and one custom made shaft 2.75" longer than a 60 series short side.

You won't be disappointed in Bobby's shafts (lol).

Are you going to run your shock mounts in double sheer? Reason I ask is because I think two pieces of 3/16 or 1/4 steel would be more supportive than one.

I really like the rig and I still do not understand why Toyota chose not to import those to the USA, they beat the hell out of any J%*p.

Exellent thread mate. Thanks for posting!

It would be nice if we had competitions like you guys have !

I am a big fan of longfields thats why I didn't hesitate in going to the trouble of getting his shafts again. I haven't got a photo of the finished shock mount but I have done as you suggested, with bracing as well, should be plenty strong enough. I cannot understand why they never sold them in US, where I live is close to a lot of mines so there is HEAPS of 70 series new and old.

Thanks mate, I'm going to have a bit of a break from comps for a while, I need to sort out a few little bugs before I can really drive in anger again.

I'll do an update on the damage from this weekends comp tomorrow,

Cheers
Rob

Ok a bit of a delay in updating after the comp, I suppose because there isn't a great deal of good news to report. It wasn't a very successful weekend for team middy strength but we still had fun. It is a awesome property with some serious potential.

It turns out there is something wrong with the rear diff housing or hub, as we broke two axles on the long side. I think the first one was broken before we got there and was broken from easter comp. I'm pretty sure the housing is bent and that's what is giving us grief. I also twisted the box section front shaft, and also twisted the bush fix replacement.

Here's a few pics

4mm wall 40x40, going to try some 40x40 solid or a really heavy wall

looks like it has been cut.... it wasn't.

So we are back into it! Today was the first time we'd taken a grinder to the cruiser since easter and it felt good to get into it again. We have started by doing the rear wheel arches, we have done the drivers side so far and will knock over the passenger side tomorrow.

I have also just ordered the items needed to do some hydro assist and the Advanced adapters 4:1 transfer gears from locktup, so hopefully that will turn up in the next couple of weeks.

We have made a good start, life is soooo much easier with the hoist, hardly any swearing (in anger), minimal spanner throwing and virtually no kicking of any items on the ground  .

IMG_0245.jpg

Got the rear axle out so it can be replaced with a 60 series axle. I've also cut off the old fixed hanger, I'm waiting for new ones to be made so I can move it back about 3 inches. This will stretch the wheelbase, improve my departure angle and will allow me to use the same springs and shackle as the front.

IMG_0249.jpg

This is the new axle, 50x50x5 rhs for those playing at home, they are just tacked on for now until I get the whole shebang mounted under there.

IMG_0250.jpg

Diff guard tacked on, just made from scrap and put my newly acquired press to good use, for something I have never had or really used before it has got a bloody good work out already.

IMG_0251.jpg

The track bar brackets, I've just got to cut them down a bit. The lowest hole and the hole 2nd from the top are the ones that will line up with the original track bar. I am changing the chassis end of the track bar too, I've ordered a 1.25" heim and I am thinking that I will fit it to the crossmember so it pointing up and down and fit a shackle to that.

IMG_0246.jpg

Simmo is halfway though doing the 4:1 transfer gears, The back half of the case is at the machinists to get the clearance needed for the bigger gears, I tried to do it with the grinder and I failed :bad-words:.

IMG_0247.jpg

The 4wd on these and I think some 60 series had a vacuum operated solenoid, I didn't like it as I was always having problems with it. If any one else is thinking of doing it, it's pretty easy really, you will need the oil seal, dust boot, the gear stick and all the bits of it.

IMG_0248.jpg

Got the front end all pulled apart too

So we're just waiting for some brackets, to get the axle under it, I ordered some solid pinion spacers too. I'll be away all week, so hopefully I'll get a chance to do some work next weekend.

a hoist is a bitchin addition to any shop.
after only having a wrenchers pit for 30 years i did not know if i would like a hoist ... now that i have one i would not be without one ... by choice.

Thanks nobrks, I'm trying to build it so I can get 40's under it if I want to.

Crushers, I agree 100%, even though I've only had it just over a week it's easily the best tool in the shed. I just hope that we are building it strong enough not to brake, I won't want to fix anything lying on the ground now.

Made a bit of progress. Here's some pics.

IMG_0284.jpg

Dropped the front crossmember, this is because the castor wasn't quite right but not being able to turn it forward much more because of tie rod- spring clearence and the draglink would make contact with the drivers side spring on up travel.

IMG_0286.jpg

Rear end all mocked up, the rear shackle angle is a bit steep, I think I will try a shackle maybe an inch longer.

IMG_0279.jpg

Simmo pulled the rear diff apart and discovered why we weren't getting anything to the passenger side axle. Broken locker, the one on the left was ok but you can see the broken bits on the ride hand side.

IMG_0278.jpg

Got a heim joint for the ladder bar too. Going to go with a shackle style instead of the slip style, should allow for a bit more adjustment.

how about relocating the shackle hanger back instead? wouldn't that give you more travel?
just curious as i am enjoying this thread ...
