Here's my original thread from the expedition section
https://forum.ih8mud.com/expedition-builds/302091-middy-strength-bj73.html

Since it's taken a new route to the more competion/ hardcore side of wheeling I thought I'd move to the 70 series section. There is probably more people in the know about the Middy and the mods I want to do to it in this section.

Ok so I've had some time off from the cruiser. I've been working on the hilux and trying to set up my own business so I haven't had alot of extra time for the cruiser. Now things have been organised I should be finding some more time to work on it. Heres a few pics, 'cos pics a better than words :P

heres the chop line
001-15.jpg

to fit these, 37x12.5 r 15. I with these because they are what I think are the best tyre I could get in a R15.Cheaper than I thought too so I can get a good discount on the 4th one with the res tof the voucher.

And i pulled out all the storage system, all that work for nothing, but is all for a good cause

I'll put up the plans for it too, to save people having to go back to the original thread.
I'm going to do a spring over with flattened 60 series rear springs f and r, shakle reversal, hi-steer, trussed diff housings, 60 series rear diff housing and spacers on the front to make up the width.
Other mods will be running it on gas only, exo cage, internal rollcage, soft top front air locker, possibly some transfer case mods and I was thinking of doing dual shocks to help control body roll for the higher speed stages of comps then removing them for the slower stuff, any thoughts on that?

Current mods are
extended shackles on sagged springs, holden 308( GM motor), front and rear lockrights, 30mm body lift (probably removing), longfields, 3/8th rear axle studs and the rest of the mods were all related to going camping so I won't bother with that stuff.

Cheers

Wow mate
this sure is going to turn into a beast , are u going to change the diff ratio or will the 5.0 turn the new shoes

If you're going to keep it registered, a springover makes it into a cop magnet. Just so you know.

Yeah I was thinking of going to a cryo'd set of 5.29's and hope they are strong enough. Herbs yeah mate I'm all over the legal issues of spring overs, she's is going to be on a trailer, thanks though.

Another option is transfer gears, gears from some auto cases will bring your overall gearing down the same as if you had ~ 4.88 diffs. Can be done pretty cheaply.

Oh ok, is that the 2.3:1 ratio or is it lower again?

Please get some good photos of the guard chop, and show us, I am interested in how it goes.

Too easy mate, I am interested to see how it goes too.

Allright so i've had a big weekend. Starting to set up the diff for the spring over, the laser cutting is still getting done on the brackets, getting the perches and the U-bolt plates made. If any one is doing this sort of stuff you can save a bloody fortune if you get the brackets laser cut and made yourself instead on buying them at snake, superior etc.

pulled the axle out yesterday. I really need a concrete slab, getting over working on grass
003-15.jpg

decided to shave the diff, I reckon I've gained about 12-15mm extra clearance
011-4.jpg

plated and welded up

clearance on the ring

diff protector and trussed. Is it worth trussing the short side of the axle?

I got the rear spring over done yesterday and its all back in with the 60 series rear spring.

I took a couple of leave out of the pack but its still too tall, I'm going to get them reset so that they are almost flat. I thought the shackle angle would have been steeper than that but not to worry it will flatten out a bit when I get the springs reset.
005-12.jpg

As you can see it's sitting pretty high, I'll probably take the body lift out too I think.
009-7.jpg

I went a little crazy with the pinion angle I turned it up about 3 or 4 degrees, I think I'll chuck the wedges out of the front on the to save cutting the perches off.
002-16.jpg

did a little brace and worked around the diff breather, in hindsight it would have been easier to drill and tapp a new hole but I would had to have gone to the shop to get the right tapping bit, so I did it the hard way.
001-17.jpg

Replaced the studs with cap screws
007-10.jpg

And replaced the already upgraded bolt to cap screws aswell for extra hectic. :D

That is all for now

Nice work mate
any reason for the different bolts in the diff?
Maybe take the body lift out befor you reset the springs and see how it looks
what size tyres are on it in the pic with only the back diff in it

Cheers Clint, yeah the cap screws are a higher grade bolt, I have seen a few people on various forums have problems with breaking the studs. I think it was mostly on hilux diffs but I thought while its off I may as well make it stronger and its one less thing to worry about. Also to because I shaved the diff I have to use the bottom stud hole for the drain plug, the cap screw maeks that easier. I'll definately pull the body lift out but I will definately lower it too, I'm trying to keep it as low as I can, sounds silly with a spring over I know. And it was 35's on the rear diff.

Got a little bit done this weekend, it was slow going, I spent more time sitting down brainstorming (read: drinking in a chair). Heres some photos

draged the front axle out

Cut the spring hangers off, PITA of a job.

Half way there mate
