I had to laugh. I saw this thread right after my key broke on a recent road trip.(5500 miles and just got back yesterday, i will have a thread up on my cruiser soon)) I am in the machining industry and was thinking about making an aluminum one and doing a hard coat anodize. It would be a bit of work to get programmed and setup but might be worth it. Would a lot of people be interested?

I would be in for two.

I know i have been MIA on this but its still in the works between vacation and an emergency french drain for my house i was a little behind!
Soon!

I am interested, on my way home from 100s on the hills the valet in Denver broke mine off in the ignition and hooked me up with a new shell.

I actually prefer just using the key without the door lock functions. The remote range is so awful in the 100 anyway!

Are the Lexus keys different than the LC key? Why can't we just put our Toyota guts in a Lexus eternity key?

Lexus is a laser cut key, Toyota is not. Totally different.

I have never had a problem with these keys. Just twist the key body with your fingers down towards the blade of the key. No issue on either of my rigs.

Or do you "fellas" hang a bunch of stuff off your key rings? Maybe that's an issue. I just have the house key, a key to the office and my LC key.

I have the eternity key for my Land Cruiser as well and I'm really happy with it. Seems very stout. I had it cut to the vin at the dealership instead of copying one of my existing keys and it solved some of my key jamming issues. I also wanted to comment on the remote range. I was worried a metal case may shorten the already ridiculously short remote range. I'm happy to report that this "military grade plastic shell" is the same (or better for some reason) range as the original plastic case. I'm not sure they're available yet officially, but don't hesitate to email eternity key and they can get one to you in the mail. I can't say what the longevity will be cause I've only had it for a couple weeks, but they offer a lifetime warranty. Hope that helps some of you with broken keys. I can't imagine I'll be worried about it anymore.

Just received my Eternity key today.

Gonna have mine cut to the vin at the dealership, just to make sure it is cut correctly, since a copy of a copy doesn't always turn out the best(thanks @mr111 for the idea). It doesn't have the rubberized texture I expected, but definitely looks stronger than the standard case(my replacement hasn't even lasted a year).
I bought it directly from Eternity Key, they said they had a few R&D keys left for the LCs and expect them to go to market soon. Although not much cheaper for the R&D key, I think he said the production keys will be >$120 each.

Edit: Also, a word about the factory and replacement cases: As you can see, I don't hang a lot of keys on my ring, and I'm very careful when turning the key in the ignition, to make sure I'm not stressing the fragile aluminum ignition shaft, which is prone to failure, and the case still developed cracks around the screw head in the back. I would imagine the toughest thing my keys go through is being in my pocket, including when I go to fires and emergency calls at work. The key and head is somewhat long and I could see it being stressed trying to bend in my pocket.

Before you cut the eternity key to the vin at the dealer, make them cut you a cheap blank and make sure all the locks turn. If at any point in the trucks life the locks were changed, you would be out the cost of the expensive key if it is cut to the wrong lock.

I'm interested.

I bought regular keys, had toyota cut them and programmed them my self as backups for when my remote key breaks. There is one in the console at all times. It is also handy for leaving the truck running with the ac on when I have to leave the dogs in it for a few minutes.

I'ld hide the key somewhere not just leave it in the console. When I was in high school my car was stolen. It happened during school and the thieves broke in to probably just steal the radio but my mom had put a spare key in the glovebox so they just took the car instead.

I keep a spare under the license plate with one of the mounting screws through it.

I scooped up the last LC key from the R&D batch. Took it to the dealer today and they VIN cut it for free which was a surprise (thank you Tansky Toyota).

Works as expected and definitely appears durable enough to be the last master key I'll need to buy.

Are there any plans for these eternity
Folks to produce yota keys? Their web page only shows lex keys.

Disclaimer: shameless plug coming...

I was very excited about these eternity keys a year or two ago, but I don't think they ever launched officially for the Toyota version. I was fed up with waiting for something to come to market so I made a shell for just the FOB and use a regular transponder key. Link below if you're interested.

Trunk has a good sense of humor as long as we stick to tech (and I did!)... but we've decended into chat and that will bring the Mods out in force.

I'm actually considering trying to make an alternate key shell, metallic or otherwise. If it comes to anything you guys will be the first to know!

Would I be able to take the actual key section from a broken plastic case and affix to your metal case?

Just as a reminder.......

There is a cheap way to solve this unless you are just hell-bent on doing things the hard way:

What have you done to your 100 Series this week?

My local ACE Hardware store had no issue with cutting my new keys to match the old ones, and I was out the door with TWO brand-new keys for $14....

1 Banana Job.... or less. :)

FYI / YMMV / BTDT / ETC.
