Parts for Steve trickling in, new Full-float 70 axle here.
Hope to be picking up by Thanksgiving

So, with a lot of time and effort we have an OEM FF axle under Steve. 70 series housing and 6 lug hubs from another application (can't recall), drum brakes with parking brake. The 70 spring perches are too far apart by about an inch. I didn't want to cut and weld a bunch on a brand new housing, so fabbed up some extensions, filled in and relocated the centering pin hole and packaged it all so that it would fit under a stock 55. It's a much better option than a custom rear axle as everything is available new from Toyota and from current models. So parts availability will be good. Plus we retain the correct track width.
I'll snap more installed pictures next time it's on the lift.

Don won't have any issue keeping up with traffic now.

The truck is essentially fully loaded right now so I decided to get it weighed. It has most of Don's camping gear, fridge, tools, toilet, Starlink, water tank (empty), tent, awning and I filled up the 55 gallon fuel tank.

That's without me in it. So figure with food, water, 2 people and some more gear it's probably going to be 7000lbs heading down the highway. That poor little 2F was never going to cut it.

I can't wait to hear more about the mods to the 70 FF housing - it sounds great.

The FF rear sounds like the perfect choice for a porker of that weight!

I will add that this thing is great to drive now. No issues keeping up with traffic (or passing).

One of the decisions we made was to ditch the mechanical fan due to packaging constraints and went with Mosely's LS swap radiator with electric fan. We struggled with cooling issues with the 2F on 100+degree days in stop and go traffic while the AC was on. With this radiator the temperature never climbs and I have no concerns about overheating. I do have it wired so the AC triggers it to go into full power automatically, but based on what I've seen I think it would be ok without on all but the hottest days.

It definitely helps. It was no small undertaking to piece it together and a lot of effort went to finding the correct seals, etc. that would work with FF hubs not designed for this particular housing. It's a viable option for anyone now, but you will come close to your $5k overall Pig budget.

It sounds like you learned a lot.
This question reveals my lack of knowledge of FF rear axles, but why not use hubs that were designed for that housing?
