Original first post:

Guys, this is going to be tough to say, but I think I am going to sell my 40. :crybaby: The wife has been talking babies A LOT lately, and I need another car that is child friendly (carseats, AC, etc.). I plan on looking for a Amazon Green Metallic 200 series. I am not sure the best way to sell the 40 and get top dollar. I have had a few people offer to buy it from me when I am out and about, but I think I may try and find a place with good real estate so it can get more traffic. I have no idea what I can get for it either; I have had serious offers of $10k-$15k (which I would of course never sell it at that price), to half-serious offers of $25k-$40k.

I am not sure how I should go about selling it, and would appreciate any advice from the group. I have thought about cleaning it up really well and driving it to dealerships and seeing what I can get for it in trade. I am also thinking about contacting MS AutoSource (on Lakeland Dr.) and seeing if I can sell it on consignment and use their lot to try and get more traffic. I would have to call them and see if that was even an option though. I have even thought about taping a For Sale sign to the windshield too. I know there is a lot of negativity with trying to get top-dollar for Fj40s, but I can't afford to NOT get as much as I can, so I will not be posting it for sale on MUD.

Depending on what I can get for the 40, will determine my price point for the 200. I am seeing the green 2008s average between $30k and $50k, and we could easily pay a little more to get something a little nicer, depending on the specs. I would prefer that it have less than 100k on the odomenter (if it is close, I would also perfer that the scheduled 90k or 100k service be done). Looking for a non-smoker, and I really really want one with a Cool Box.

So I ask 3 things:
1. Keep your ear out for anyone looking for something like my 40, and let me know.
2. If you have any advice on the best way to get the most money for it let me know (MUD is out, as it is probably the worst place to sell a landcruiser).
3. Keep an eye out for a Amazon Green 200 series in the $35k to $55kish price range. The lower the miles the better. I will not be buying one until the 40 is gone, so no rush. (there are a few 2008s on cars.com this very minute).

I'm gonna miss her:

mud and eBay would be the best place to sell the truck. A dealer in town will not understand what the truck is....they just use a book and recent local auction numbers for value.

I got what I wanted for many vehicles on Ebay. Put the price you want for the truck as a Buy It now auction with no expiration and be very detailed and let it sit people will offer. That seems to better on higher end vehicles. Also put that you will trade for a green 200.

You have a badass 40....you have time some time.

I would not bring it to MS Autosource. They are great guys and good if you want to buy a car from auction, but they would just bring it to the Memphis auction where it is mostly newer cars. If you to sell at auction I would bring it to a classic car auction like Barrett Jackson to get the most money.

I agree with Bomar about putting it on EBay and mud. Yes there will be cheapskates, but the guys on here will also appreciate it more than the average person. I would pick a price and list it those two places and maybe even Craigslist. If it doesn't sell then go another route.

That is the best looking 200 color in my opinion...but also the most rare from my regular searching.

I've driven half a dozen and looked at lots more and they have all had the cool box.

Good luck on your search!

Thanks guys. I think you are right about not trying to take it to a stealership. I put some FOR SALE signs on it yesterday. I will be driving it around town and seeing if I can generate any more interest. I did talk to the owner of the MS AutoSource dealership, and he said that he would help me sell the 40 by using his lot on Lakeland Dr. For those of you who might not be familiar with the location, it gets huge amounts of traffic during rush hour. He told me that the way he usually does it, is we would agree on a lowest offer amount, and anything he sells it for above that price, would be split 50/50. It sounds like a pretty good deal to me, expecially given that fact that so many people would see it every day. This would be strictly a lot sale, not taken to auction, etc.

He also told me that the 200s he has sold have had an average mileage of 80k, and they have sold for an average of $34k, which would mean that I would be paying about $36k or $37k in the end, which is also a fairly good deal from what I have seen.

I'll keep the thread updated with what happens.

Good luck with the sale. Hate to see you sell it as well. I would clean it up good and get Nolen to take some poser shots of it to post on Mud. Do a really detailed post in the for sale section. You might be surprised at the response.

Small update:

I have had two offers for $25k so far, and that was just calling a few people that had expressed interest in the past.

I think I am going to ask around $35kish. I have not even advertised it for sale outside of this page and facebook. I think having it on Lakeland Dr. will really boost traffic.

I am in the process of fixing up all of the "little things" that were bothering me; replaced fuel guage and sending unit, fixed a few leaks, fixed some paint chips, replaced seatbelt, etc. Hopefully the work will pay off.

was just about to ask if you were getting any bites...

I'll be taking it to MSAS on Wednesday to talk to the dealer and agree upon my minimal asking price and the advertised price. I assume that the car will probably be on the lot late this week or next week. Wish me luck.

Ok. Not that it matters to me but you've been offered 25k. But you gonna put it on a lot-internets with their mark up on it. How do you gain?

I'd take it and run! Great offer for any 40. Hell I'll sell mine for that all day!

All you want Fireman! Smart ass!

Yeah, 25k is good, but no hurt in seeing if I can get more. If I can't, no harm no foul. I need to get as much as I can to put towards another ride. If I can't sell it, I'll just keep it.

I agree with the others that $25K is a fair price for your 40. I hope you don't end up getting burned by trying to squeeze more out of it. That would be my luck... :-/

Kinda lost by the logic of needing to get as much as you can so you can buy a new ride, or you'll just keep it??? $25K is $25K more towards the purchase of a new whip than if you were to just keep it.

Good luck with whatever you decide!
