Hey folks,

might attempt this conversion from man-a-fre:
MAF Disc Parking Brake Conversion Kit
and new cable:
Parking Brake Cable
(item 46410-G)

now, while im there, is there anything else i should replace? read somewhere that the t-case output shaft seal, leaks t-case fluid into the old oem drum style e-brake assembly..? if so, i'm tryin to figure out which seal it is on the MAF site...:

Transfer Case Housing and Related

is the :

36104A-B36104A SEAL, FRONT OUTPUT 1963-7/80

... ?

and would i need the deflector (or is that a metal piece?):

36104B-A36104B DEFLECTOR 1963-7/80

or use the orginal... ?

just want to get my parts list before i commit.

if all goes well, i'll document with pics for the next newb to follow.

and yeah, no point finding a used drum assembly, cuz it sounds like new oem costs more than the disk conversion, and it's clearly a better mechanism to work with...

any tips, hugely appreciated.

oh yeah, i'm tryin to visualize where the assembly would bolt on to?? after the flange??

romey

(think i have a pic on the camera, will try and post it)

brake kit

I tried to install one thinking it would solve my clearance issue with the crossmember when I went from a 3 speed to a 4 speed on a 71---it didnt

I took it back off and put the drum back in as it would not clear the crossmember

it is very lighly built out of alum and the pads are surprising small
just hold on to your old stuff just in case you dont like it

I'm pretty sure it will work ok but I had the issue of clearance to deal with

thanks bsmith, i just reread your thread too a second ago, form your orginal link to my old thread re: e-brake. it's 78 with stock 4speed/driveline, so i shouldn't have clearance issues..?

There's a good write-up and pics here...

What I don't understand is how MAF can sell you a new disk brake but charge you a 100 bucks for the drum core...if you send them your old drum do you get your hundred bucks back? or is that just a sneaky way to tack on another C-note to the price?

huh, so the core charge it comes with isn't necessary cuz the stock one works fine? so they're making you to get something you don't need with the job...?

but yes, saw that thread too, just no mention of that t-case output seal or any other extras, guess it's that simple...looks like it bolts infront of the square piece/flange...

edit: it's the REAR output seal i need, duh. i knew the diagram looked confusing!

Part Number 36132A-A . . . seal rear output

If you are really sold on the MAF idea PM me and I'll make you an offer you can't refuse on the one I did not use--it's brand new --installed and removed only.

hmm, should one be "sold" on it?! it is vulnerable to hard wheeling...

pm sent.

Fabricate a skid plate that protects it similar to this one.

In Marks Off Road FAQ, it seems like he discourages this type of conversion... He is wise, it would be wise to follow in his footsteps.

"d. DISC PARKING BRAKE. Other than the bling factor, I don't recommend this unless your cruiser is not going to leave the pavement OR you have a skidplate that is impregnable. While the theory of the disc is interesting, as a practical matter you cannot get a disc big enough to reach into a caliper of any worth without it being big enough to hang lower than the transfer case. That being the case, it becomes the weak link, because as soon as you hit it, you WILL dent it, and it will not travel thru the caliper any more. At that point, something will have to give, and I don't want to be there to find out what it is." - Marks Off Road FAQ

Unless they have changed the kit, they take the drum housing and machine off the drum to bolt the disk onto. On the one I had years ago the bracket that held the "caliper" didn't locate it very well. Ended up taking it off and using line locks.
