Update update - am toying with the idea of a trade for the General, but only for a late 85-87 FJ60 for a potential H55F swap down the road. If you are interested, hit me up.
Otherwise am happy to have it stick around. Description below is all the same, except that I had B-Z rebuild (really re-seal) the steering box and P/S pump; had Cruiser Tech in Laguna Hills replace the rear main seal; replaced the air rail check valve; and fixed an electrical gremlin with the fuel pump (which is fine). It passed CA smog in April.
1988 FJ62 Land Cruiser
195,600 original miles. Work done includes:
Rust repair and respray of roof, rear quarters and hood. Reseal drip rails and repair all rust holes on roof and in rear quarter panels.
Rust repair on frame and C-channel reinforcement replacements installed from Trail Tailor.
New OEM dash pad and rear bumper
Replaced seals on pushrod cover, front crank, and oil pan / valve cover gasket to clean up oil leaks.
New OEM valve stem seals installed in July 2024
Rebuilt alternator, rebuilt smog pump by B-Z Rebuilders
New catalytic converters, exhaust downpipes, O2 sensors, OEM throttle position sensor. Rebuilt injectors and replaced cold start injector, EGR valve, EGR switch, and all vacuum lines. New OEM fuel pressure regulator and fuel pressure damper. Passes CA smog.
New harmonic balancer (Australian) and new belts
Replaced neutral safety switch with good used OEM.
Auto transmission fluid flush (Rodney flush), installed external Hayden ATF cooler. Replaced transmission computer (idiot light does not come on). Clean and replace transmission filter and gasket. Trans shifts great and stays nice and cool.
Rebuilt transfer case with all Japanese parts / bearings from Cruiser Teq
New custom driveshaft from Full Torque Driveshaft.
Rebuilt knuckles with all OEM bearings and parts, replaced wheel bearings at all 4 corners with new Koyo bearings from Japan. Replaced driver side rear axle shaft and rear third member with good used OEM. Birfs are in good shape.
Michelin Defender XTS tires have about 3K miles, replaced March 2024. Replaced 2 bad wheels with good used OEM.
Remove and repair fuel tank, replace fuel pump with new OEM as of November 2023.
Replace headlight harness with heavier gauge OEM wiring and relays.
Tune up, new spark plugs, spark plug wires. Replaced distributor with good used OEM.
Replaced radio with a slightly newer Toyota head unit. Has Bluetooth streaming for your phone to new speakers at all four corners under OEM grilles.
Replaced passenger window regulator and window channel felts on both sides. Passenger window is still a bit difficult to roll up and down but does work. I have the OEM regulator to reinstall if you wanted to.
Replaced all coolant hoses and installed new Mishimoto aluminum radiator. New Aisin OE fan clutch. Runs nice and cool even in hot weather. A/C was converted to 134-A by prior owner in 2019.
Replaced webbing on front seat belts, mechanisms overhauled by Safety Restore. Rear lap belt reels are a little temperamental but work fine. The rear does have threaded holes on the C-pillars under the liners for a shoulder belt installation if you wanted to go that route.
Replace front brake calipers and newer pads. Replaced rear drums and shoes. Replaced brake proportioning valve. Flush and replace brake fluid as of May 2023.
Oil changes completed every 3K miles with synthetic Rotella T6 15w-40 and OEM filters. Retained all records dating to 1990. Purchased from second owner, who had owned it from 1990 to 2023 and had purchased off a lease.
The bad stuff:
Driver’s seat cover is not OEM. I have a good used OEM one that I may put on down the road.
Interior could use a good detail. Small crack in the dash bezel just under one of the vents. I have a new fuel filter and may toss that on just to do it.
This has been a fun project getting up to daily driver reliability and spec. I specifically didn't do a full-on restore but got it looking good cosmetically, so I could enjoy around town or camping or whatever, without worrying too much. Ham radio can be removed prior to sale, no holes were created in the install so it will look like it was never there.
Trade considerations for late 85-87 FJ60.
