My point is "if everybody likes the same we all be married with the same women". So keep looking and i hope you find your cruiser!!

Very true my friend

We may not have all married the same women but I think we all are married to 'Cruiser Widows. I know my wife probably feels that way with the amount of time I spend in the garage turning wrenches on my 40!

Well said by roxx.

In my opinion none of us are "working that hard" to give brysen leads that he may or may not be able to chase down. Im quite certain these leads hes being given are leads that all of us saw while looking ourselves and maybe even dreaming. We just passed on to him in hopes someone we know could score the deal. I was in his shoes in 1994 when I wanted a cruiser so bad and had a dad who needed convincing. As someone mentioned above , I too would buy a truck trader after school with my friends every Monday in hopes the magical truck was there. I drove a 15 yr Oldsmobile for a year before I got my fj60 that i had save up and pay half of and it was 12 years to finally get my fj40.

Unless any of us are sending him a check to buy the truck, l think we should all let the process play out and celebrate with him when the big day finally arrives. Whether that's in 2 weeks or 2 years. No one is being harmed, losing money or time by his hunt taking a while.

Brysen. You'll find the right truck one day whether your dad is the person who helps you buy it or you have to do it on your own. Keep up the hunt. You're prob learning a ton about these trucks just looking for one.

Just my .02 cents

NCFJ speaks much truth. If you look back to post #99, I basically told Brysen to go buy a TJ. I still think it's the best vehicle for him. It makes so much more sense than a 40 given his situation. However, you gotta give the guy credit. He does have impeccable taste. He knows what he wants (at least he thinks he does). His devotion to the FJ40 is unwavering. He seems like a good kid. He's involved with school, church and scouts. I respect that. He kinda' reminds me of myself back in '83-'84 when I was his age. That's why I continue to try to help him out.

I think a lot of us are frustrated with the fact that nothing has happened yet despite having given Brysen multple leads and seeing several good deals come and go with little or no action on his part. We are anxious to see him make a purchase and start turning wrenches. We want this to happen almost as much as he does. I keep trying to remind myself that when I start to feel frustrated it has to be ten times worse for him. His hands are pretty much tied. He's 15 and dreaming about his first car. You guys remember how that was for you, right? And nowadays with the internet and forums like MUD, a kid can go in and post about his dream car which serves to perpetuate his dreams. I remember as a 15 y/o getting the old paper Car Trader mags and trying to search out good deals. I had no money to buy a car but I bought the Car Trader every week just to see what was out there and to dream about what might be my first car. I think that's what Brysen was doing initially on this forum. He's in a little deeper now but he's still in "dream mode."

Bottom line: Brysen came on here too quick asking for purchasing advice when what he really needed was general automotive knowledge. Maybe he should have waited until he was really ready to make a purchase. The knowledge he has gained thus far will help him in his search but he jumped the gun by asking us for leads when he was not ready to move. I gave him a good lead yesterday on one in ATL. We'll see if anything comes of it. I will continue to assist Brysen because I think it's the right thing to do. Not too many kids out there interested in these vehicles. Most of them post up on the fart pipe tuner car forums. If we can save one then we should try. I'll do my part as frustrating as it may be at times....

Very well said. I too will continue to dream with him

I am truley a fortunate man in this department. My wife loves LCs and has talked me into buying a couple when I was on the fence. She claimed the green 80 as her own and took the for sale signs off the 88 4RNR when I was selling it. She is also my parts person and tracks down parts for me all the time.

Now the FJ Cruiser is a different story, she will be happy to see it go, never liked it.

Made the trip to pigeon forge to look at the 76 today. Seemed to drive/ride well. Thinking of an offer but haven't decided yet and I'm still weighing the pros and cons.

What did you like? What did you love? What are the truck's problems?

Pros: Engine ran strong, tranny shifted smooth, sounded great when running and driving. No oil/fluid leaks. Steering felt good (it was manual, and my dad drove it some).

Cons: Needs a little more body work than I'd like, but I'm researching and looking into it now and getting ready to look at another. Suspension and frame were solid and didn't show any rust (maybe a little surface rust but nothing through) so that's a plus.

Your gonna see surface rust on the frame unless it has been restored.

Sounds like a great fit at a great price. Body work can come in time. Mine was a disaster when I got it an i did it over the course of a few years. As long as the seats aren't falling thru and its bolted safely to frame you're safe.

X2!! Go for it

Does the price fit within your budget, allowing for future repairs/maintenance/modifications?

Sounds solid if it does.

If everything is solid except for the body and the price is good you could most likely repair the damage or replace the tub and still come in near budget.

Before I answer or say anything else here's a couple pics of what I would be getting into body wise. Didn't post earlier because I didn't want to get heckled and I wanted to do some research and try to figure it out on my own. Both quarters are shot, same goes for the wheel wells, and the outer rocker drivers side needs some work, there's also a few fist size holes in the rear floor. No telling what's hiding under the paint of the rear sill too. I figured up some rough estimates of what it would cost based on cool cruiser body panels and parts, and I factored in a rough estimate of labor and came up in the ball park of 2500 to 3000 at least for the body work needed on it and that's just an estimate I came up with. Body work is expensive stuff. That adds up and who knows if it will stay in good shape mechanical wise? I think the best and safe play for now is to pass and maybe keep this one in my back pocket. You tell me though.

Well i will admit body is worse than i imagined. But if you can get for the price you told me they is lots of $ left for body work.

how much does an aqualu tub cost????

tub replacement would most likely be the way to go.

Wilecoyote has a tub for sale in Kentucky.

Al,

4k or so not including shipping/freight to get it here from Canada where they're made at. Plus whatever it would cost in paint and installation costs too. I agree it needs a new tub but I think it's got too much body work for me at this point.
