There are those that talk and those that do! Buy one already and repair what it needs.:D

You have 2 very good prospects, IMHO, in the one in Pigeon Forge (which is probably already sold) and the one Gabe just brought to your attention from an Upstate member. Well worth checking out before it too is sold. If I had the extra dough, I'd be hot on either one.

I've been reading posts from other 40 wannabee owners and they all say the good deals are sold before they even get a chance to look at them. That's why they are good deals!

Tell your parents it will be an early Christmas and birthday present. That works, trust me! ;)

are they as game and ready for this plan as you are? just wondering.

its not spur of the moment when you spend a year looking and educating yourself getting closer to the one. Just saying others are looking too and a good deal wont necessarily wait for you to make time to come look/offer.

ive waivered on a few for just a day and somewhat regret two of them

youve had great luck in the process so far:
1: education- you found mud and already know more than most blind buyers
2: find vehicles for sale: youve had good luck digging and been given many leads
now its time for step 3
3: communicate and go see it. It all starts here.

ok so pass on the mustard one.... just saying it might be worth a peek but obviously not

id be asking mom or dad if they could drive you to winston this weekend. I think ive seen that one for sale before, might be a friend of s4's. It looks pretty original unmolested and has most all the desires you started this thread with.

otherwise plan a mtn leaf watching trip on the BRP and swing by and see the one in pigeon forge above. That one would be worth a phone call and email first maybe for distance. Part of the process though. I drove 3 hours twice and came home empty handed but got to satisfy my curiosities by seeing in person. I know easier when you have a liscense :D

I couldn't agree with Jason more here. People here are giving you leads and trying to help you out but if you are not able to go see these vehicles in person and if you and/or your folks are not in a monetary position or mindset to jump immediately on a good deal then you might be better off waiting until that can happen. Good deals don't last. People won't hold on to a 40 and wait for you. We all want to help you but you don't want to be known as the kid who cried wolf. I realize that at your age you are dependent on your folks for money and transportation in order to check out and possibly buy a 40 but if you can't follow up on the leads you are given maybe you should hold off asking for them.

Yes they know that I'm obsessed and serious about getting one and they know that there's no changing my mind on this either. It's just a matter of timing of when they aren't working and when we aren't so busy so we can go check it out in person. You're right I have had lots of luck and good things happen in my search so far. I wouldn't have made it this far without all of the help, encouragement, and advice from all of y'all. I'm not saying the mustard ones not worth a look. I'll definitely look into it and I'm definitely gonna contact the guy that has the 76 in east bend and the one in pigeon forge. Maybe we can go look at one tomorrow afternoon/evening or Sunday. Who knows? It just depends on finding the time when my parents aren't working and when we aren't busy. I'm gonna call some people and send some emails today. I've thought about the prospect of maybe flying out west to maybe Colorado, New Mexico, or somewhere like that and takin like a long weekend (maybe a Thursday to a monday) to look at several that I've found on craigslist and hopefully buy one from out there since they're all basically rust free out there. Again this would have to be a time when we aren't super busy and when my dads off work. Thanks for the advice again. I really need and appreciate it and keep it coming. The 40 is gonna be here before you know it.

How would You get the truck back? Shipping isn't cheap and that's money lost that could go towards repair/ body work.

Here's an idea...Tell your Dad to join Mud. Get his excitiment level up a notch. Get him involved and educated. Ya'll learn this Land Cruiser thing together. Pitch the purchase to him as a father-son project. What Dad can say no to something like that? Go to the Cars and Coffee. Meet the ONSC group. Everyone I've met has been super-nice and very helpful. Y'all are welcome to come check out my 40. Take it for a drive. I know others have offered this as well. I'm close to you...Weddington. It would take you 30 minutes tops to get from your doorstep to mine. This invitation is open to you. Once your Dad takes a sip of the Kool-Aid he may be more excited about driving you all over creation in search of your prize. Heck, y'all might end up with two. It happens all the time.

This is great advice and a perfect example of why it's so great to have a forum like this. So many people looking at things from different angles are able to offer wisdom and advice that somebody on their own can only acquire after years of doing it and learning from experience.

Looking forward to C&C tomorrow. I'll tag along to see the yellow 40 in Plaza Midwood if you set it up, although it's not looking as good as it once did. But you never know if the guy did some work that he didn't mention and photos don't show...

Sounds like a good plan! We'll definitely be at cars and coffee for lunch tomorrow to see and finally meet everybody and hopefully everyone can help persuade my dad some and peak his interest and educate him like you said. He is interested for sure I just don't know to the exact extent. He wants me to have one but I don't know if he's super into getting underneath it and working on it himself like I want to do. But idk. Who knows he may be. Looking forward to cars and coffee/ lunch tomorrow and getting to meet everybody that's there in person and getting to see some cool cars and especially the cruisers. I'm definitely interested in coming and seeing yours and having you take us for a spin. That would be great! Anytime you're free would be good. Just let me know. Do you still have my number? If not you can let me know and I'll pm it to you or it's probably somewhere in this thread.

Emailed the guy with the mustard one in plaza midwood and left my number and a message saying that we wanted to come look at it tomorrow. Waiting to hear a response. I'm going to call on the one in pigeon forge and the one in east bend too here in the next hour and a half or so. My dad said we could go Sunday and look at either one of them (which one do y'all think is better? I'm leaning towards pigeon forge one, but idk you tell me). Will let y'all know what I hear.

I can tell you this much. If you can, take a car trailer and $CASH and a blank bill of sale. The trailer and cash both say you are serious and not wasting the seller's time. If you can not take a trailer, make sure you have cash. The bill of sale makes everything kosher.

CHECK VIN NUMBERS to title. Ask before you go if they have title IN HAND. Make sure that the seller signs the title in the proper place.

Brysen I haven't seen the one in Pigeon Forge. The red one has some promise. The mustard one is pretty roached. I'd take advantage and travel to one of the farther away ones (pigeon forge) while you've got a weekend day and your Dad is available. The mustard one is so close you could check it out on a weekday after school.

Spoke with the mustard ones owner. He has someone that is coming to look at it in the morning at 10. We'll all be at cars and coffee but he said that he'll call me and let me know if it sold or not and then if not we could come tomorrow afternoon and look at it sometime after cars and coffee. I didn't get the chance to call in the other two yet but will in the morning. My dad said he'd go on Sunday to either one it's about the same drive to both. I'm thinking we'll probably go to the pigeon forge one depending on if the owner is free.

How did you do today?
We drove 492 miles and brought this one home today

I am trying to push him that way. I think that 5.3 combo came from fz80. Seller is a member of uc.

It is a good deal and the same one gimpy linked him above. Jimbo is a good guy. It is a 5.7 and came from me. Ran great. Had a few leaks but went well.

Call pigeon forge or east bend owners yet? It's just a 5 minute phone call.

Jason,
Is that a 5.7 Vortec? If so do you know the year?

Update:

Went to cars and coffee yesterday. Had a great time and got to meet everyone there. Got to ride in John's and David's 40's and Eric's 45! Lets just say that I was in hog heaven! Thanks for having us and hopefully we can do something like that again.

Mustard 76 in Plaza Midwood: called on it and was planning on going to look at it after cars and coffee/lunch. The owner had someone looking at it at 10 yesterday and said he would call me to let me know if it had sold or not. Well... He called me while we were at lunch and said it had taken them a while to come together but it had sold so we never got to go see it.

Red 76 in Pigeon Forge: Called the owner yesterday afternoon when I got home from cars and coffee. He said that it runs and drives great. He said the odometer is showing 80,000 but he doesn't know if its rolled over (but he and I are assuming it has), it has some rust (that's typical and expected though) which i would most likely repair. The only thing he's had done to it in the 5 years that he's owned it is, he replaced the starter to give it more torque when it fires up. He's not in town right now but said for me to call him on Tuesday when he gets back to set up a time to go look at it so I think me and my dad might go up Thursday and Friday this week cause he's off work Thursday.

Red 76 in East Bend: haven't called on it yet. Will call either today or tomorrow sometime.

78 in Greenville: talked about it with the guys at cars and coffee and it seems like a good deal too. My only concern though is that it looks like more of a rock crawler and a trail rig right now more so than a dd. I'm gonna contact the owner today or tomorrow though. We can probably go look at it on my dads other day off which is Monday (tomorrow) too if the owner is free.

-Brysen

The 78 in Greenville is a good prospect. It is a know 40 and comes with a great many other parts that also have value. The parts can be sold off and that money can be used to finance repairs to the rig.

Quite frankly, if I had the money and were interested in a 40 I would buy up the entire lot.
