Well I got the idea from another thread that seemed to not go anywhere. Lots of LX450 owners were interested in the replacement but the shop that was doing it seemed to not care about responding to requests for pricing or anything else about it.

I had a fellow friendly mud member send me a PM with what he thought was the speaker being used by the not responsive vendor. Tang Band W4-1720 4" Underhung Midbass Driver

For $46 I ordered it and figured if it was not the right one I would only be out $46. A week later the part was in my hand and it looked good, nice dome and big magnet. Well put together and much nicer looking than the paper Pioneer that was in it from the factory.

The person that PMed me the link said they had talked to the vendor and there hold up on selling them was the plug for the speaker. So I was ready to cut and solder if needed when I installed it.

This last weened I gutted my LX450 to fully clean out all the old owner and there smell. In the process I removed the factory sub box and Sub.

Sorry for the lack of pictures I was trying to get this interior out/cleaned and back in in one day.

So a side by side comparison.

Remember how the friendly mudder said he talked to to vendor and they were trying to get a plug to make the new speaker plug and play........and that was the reason for the delay............well it already is plug and play right out of the box.

All I needed to do to fit the speaker was trim off the two plastic tabs in this picture. Notice the factory wiring making this speaker a true plug and play. I also removed this foam seal (pictured) and replaced it with double sided foam tape. I then bolted it all back in and repainted the speaker grill.

I powered it up on the stock stereo just to make sure it was producing sound. I'm in the middle of replacing all the speakers with Polk 6.5's and a Pioneer double din deck with a Alpine 4x 75watt amp for the doors and will run a small 100W sub amp to this sub.

I will report back once I have the rest of the stereo up and running.

Sorry for the lack of pictures I was in a rush trying to get the interior all back in......did not in the end.

Hope this helps other mud members take on this very easy upgrade. I would say this is easier than replacing the door speakers. It should also make some decent sound once done.

On a side note I do not think any replacement will make stellar sound without replacing the factory amp with something a bit better.

Some nice info an pics here. Can't wait for your report on how it sounds... That must have been some bad smell to completely gut the interior.

It was not too bad but I like to do this to all my cars.....a friend calls is "getting rid of the old owner". With all the sequns and other crap I pulled out the girl I got it from must have been a stripper.........defiantly glad I did the bleach/soap and water rub down of all interior surfaces.

Cool -- let us know how it works.

coupn code for the place, and free shipping over $100 bucks.

I will let you all know, it will be a bit as I am getting tires and lift first.

Forgive me for asking but what tabs are you speaking of? I had my center console out a couple of months ago and thought about changing my sub as well as it crackles when the vol is turned up, but I had no idea there was that much room for such a deep speaker.

Sorry for the brief explanation, they are very obvious when you install the sub. If you look at that last picture, right by the bolt holes you see there are two tab's one by each. Those need to be trimmed, I used a sharp olaf cutter.

Tonight I did some testing of the new sub. I have all the other speakers out of the truck so I was able to turn it way up. it produces good base from about 1/4 to 3/4 dial no distortion at all and nice and clean. I would not call it thundering base though. I have a feeling the stock amp setup in this truck is holding it back quite a bit. I also do not think the sub is well crossovered as I got quite a bit of back ground noise (this would be from the amp not the sub).

The stock sub in the same test last week would pop and distort very easily and I did not get at all as high in volume as I did with this one last night.

I believe the hold up in the stereo now is the stock deck and amp arrangement. I plan to replace both but at this time I need to get other things done on the truck that are taking precedence.

Overall I am happy with the sub and believe it was a worthwhile update after hearing the difference between the two. Do not get this little 4" sub with the asumption its going to shake windows or masage your back as you drive.

Official thread-jack, do you know what size speakers are in the dash?

I have not measured but they are small, I would say 3", they also do not put out much volume and I plan on un plugging mine. If anything they are just going to muddy the sound when I have the Polk 6.5" door speakers in.

I replaced mine a few years ago when I replaced all of my other speakers. I think it made a big difference in the overall sound of my system. I can post up what size and what model speaker I put in when I get home.

This is certainly on my list of to-do's, but that list is pretty long. Keep us posted on amp and head unit choices as you work this out. Good work!

Thanks. I recently put some Pioneers in the front doors and now I want to put some in the rear doors, replace the dash speakers, and the woofer.

The dash has 4" tweeters. I clipped them from my system (they are wired in parallel with the door speakers and pull power) and used them for CB external speaker.

So the power to the front door speakers is split to the dash speakers? Do they also play the same frequency as the door speakers or are they true tweeters? How did you clip them? Would it be OK to just unplug them and tape up the wire ends?

Good to see you got it installed and working. We, the vendor in question, were not making a plug for it, we were simply negotiating pricing with the manufacturer in order to get you guys the best price. Other projects too priority and it got put on the back burner.

For anyone interested in those as replacements for the stock unit. They work well. They are not going to be a night and day difference over a functional stock unit, but they are a slight upgrade over the stock subwoofer for sure and sound good. If you're looking for earth rattling bass, this is not the solution for you. You will need a properly made enclosure and a larger sub and amplifier. But if you're looking for a mild upgrade over the stock unit, these midbass drivers are a great choice.

Has anyone replace the sub-woofer located at the right rear panel that is powered by a seperate little amp also housed in the same panel?
Mine died and I have not been able to find the correct size woofer to replace the dead one. I suppose they are rare.
FWIW, my truck is a VXR Middle East '96 model.

I'm interested. What's the cost?

Check out the link in post#1, you can buy them there. They are the same drivers pictured in the first post. You can buy them from Parts-Express in the link in the first post.

What model POLK speakers are being used?
