Let's talk MPG. How low can you go?

I've been tracking my mpg since I bought my 80 - over two years now. I am holding steady at 12.9 average mpg. That's rolling on 35s with 4.88 gears. My low fuel light comes on pretty much the instant the needle hits E. Supposedly, this means I have 5 gals in the tank. That's 64 miles till shut-down.

My UltraGauge (just installed) seems to be spot on with these numbers. When my fuel light came on, it claimed I had 60 miles DTE.

Simple math and my UltraGauge are both telling me to ignore the fuel gauge. Fear tells me to fixate on the gauge.

Who's run it to fumes? What's your take? Who should I trust?

My vote is 50 miles give or take post light. That is w roughly 33.75 inchers

As a FYI, the low fuel light is not related to needle position. They are two independent circuits, so unless there was something awry at the factory, everyone will have the same level of fuel at light on.

The needle on the other hand is controlled by a float which can be way off if adjusted wrong.

I drive a bone stock 96 LC w/ 95k miles. I live in NYC. I drive less than 8K/yr. My driving is mostly mixed highway/city. I check my MPG every fill up just for fun. I average 13mpg. The best I have done is 17mpg (that was a trip to Vermont all Highway some mountains average 65 mpg. The worst I have done is 11.5.
Whoever is getting 17-21.8 mpg. My advise is to keep it up. I can't imagine how.

I usually fill up when the light comes on just because I don't like looking at it, but I have gone at least 50 miles past the light on occasion. Once got close to 350 out of a tank, but I would feel like a real asshat if I broke down, so I usually don't push it.

My best was 15.8mpg, when the truck was stock. My worse is 8.6mpg, modified as pictured, towing the camper, roof rack loaded with six totes, packed to the gills, and driving through the mountains of NH. Worth every penny

I live in the mountains, lots of off road and mountain driving. I average ~10mpg. Overdrive nearly always off, lots of L and 2 gearing.

Offroad I expect 200 miles from a tank.

I get 13mpg, trying to knock that down to 10mpg, need to add more weight and perhaps push harder on the skinny pedal.

Did 507 miles on the main tank last weekend on a trip over the Sierras. 25 gallons burned = 20.3 mpg. Speeds up to 75, and flogged it over the passes. 108 degrees going through Sacramento on Sunday with the AC blasting.

My range on the reserve would be around 100 miles. Not really a fair comparison, as I also have a diesel, and always have the 13 gallons in the sub. I was lucky to get 12 mpg with the gasser; so one would expect 50 miles to be a safe distance for those running gasoline.

i typically get 14 MPG with 33's. Mostly city/hwy driving. (Lowest 11.5, highest 16.5) Still all hwy

I had my tank start leaking, so I changed my TANK. I kept the SAME fuel pump setup, just installed in the replacement tank (LX450).

BEFORE I switched the tank, my light came on at EXACTLY 5 gallons and my tank held EXACTLY 25 gallons (I ran out of gas rolling into the gas station a couple times......)
Now, with the replaced tank, my light comes on at ABOUT 3 gallons remaining. The light won't come on until it's PAST the E now (used to be exactly on the E).

Now, as soon as I see the light come on, I'm searching. I don't want to run out of gas at the bad end of the mall.

My blended average is basically 13 MPG. That's driving in normal LA traffic, commuting in stop and go freeway traffic. 80 miles per day round trip.

The low fuel light in my truck is apparently burnt out or broken. To verify that it wasn't working I ran the tank to empty. I then pulled over, stopped, flipped a switch, waited 10 minutes, then started it up and proceeded to drive home. I had nearly a full tank 20 minutes later when I got there.

Having a 24 gallon aux tank is fun.

Just finished a 1300 mile trip from Raleigh, NC to Alabama and back. Averaged 15.2 mpg
