This is a GREAT thread. Now I was to expo my 80!!! Overtime. First I am waiting to buy a plasma/tig for some custom work. The welder and cut off discs wont cut it anymore. Time to step up a bit. Thanks for all the great pics.

Here is my current expedition rig. So far all trips are all in state and involve lots of fishing and camping trips. Some day a big trip may be in the works.

Currently undergoing massive upgrades: 2x4 to 4x4 conversion, solid axle swap, spring upgrades, possibly air bags too, and re-gearing with LSD/lockers, power steering, KC lights, Warn 8427 winch.

I just picked up a big confer style roof rack that I may consider putting on top if the roof if it will hold it and still open.

Eventually I want an ARB or custom front bumper for it.

First picture is mine, Second picture is what I am shooting for.

that thing is awesome! whatss the story on the cabin?

Mine is not an actual chinook camper. Chinooks were made in the 1970's and slightly different. You see them up here from time to time with tipcial 30+ years of age showing.

Mine is a 1980's (late 1984, 22re) version of the Chinook which I have been told have a different name but in all my research I can not find what they are actually called. I have only ever seen one other one (the white one in the picture above, my brown one (use to be white), and I heard of another one up here in Alaska but from what I can gather they are verry rare. Possibly a limited custom made setup on a LWB truck. 112" wheelbase.

Here is a link to my build / repairs on the camper in the pickup section if anyone wants to check it out or offer advice, tips, etc:

The picture below is an actual 1970's chinook caper portion that someone here on MUD pulled off and put on a 1980's pickup chassis, this guy did a small lift and has 33's on his.....Its got me thinking bigger tires may be in order. :)

that thing is awesome! whats the story on the cabin?

Sleeps 2 above the cab.(top bed folds out on the inside to get longer to sleep 2). Bottom bench slides out to sleep one, or 2 kids. In the fall if I go solo I just sleep on the bottom and leave the top closed. COLD fall fishing trips. :) It has a sink, drawers, cupboard, closet, 2 burner stove, fridge, heater, and inverter outlets to run toaster etc. Small removable toilet.
A little storage under the seats, and a small table too.

It is a good thing I am a small guy. 5'7" 135#. I fit in it just fine.

I need to buy a small generator for it.

I think it has a LPG leak so I need to look into that after I get the build finished. The sink has a hand pump but I want to put in an electric one too that runs on batt. power.

The fridge only runs when plugged in to 115V as far as I know so I need to swap it out for one that will also run on LPG.

The heater also only works when plugged into 115V, hence the need for a generator.

So far the interior is all original and I will worry about updating that after I get it back to running. I will have to post some pictures of the inside next summer.

Brown interior of cours.......it's the 1980's man!

we could almost live in that thing:hillbilly::cheers:

Didn't see a lot of 4runners in here so I'll add mine to the mix.

1989 4runner, 22re (with 244,000 miles thank you), 5 speed, ZUK coils in the rear, 1.5" BJ's in the front, lockers front and rear, Wilderness roof rack, 285/75/16 TW Guard Dogs, geared to 5.29, MC front/rear bumpers, 82 Supra AFM, Red Top, LCE header, etc... etc... etc...

I have a camping box that goes in the rear that holds everything we need for an extended stay out in the middle of nowhere. We haul our own water, cooking utensils, fire starting things, recovery gear, firearms, signal devices, comm etc. Makes it great to leave after work on a Friday, pick up the dogs, and just disappear for a few days.

That little blue demon was my first expedition build. The next one is going to be a 100 series Land Cruiser and should start sometime this year if I can find one I want to pay for.

Cheers!

here is one of mine on a trip up to alaska for 37 days. It has a 3" OME lift, rear drawer system, onboard 85L water tank with a 12Volt RV pump for running water, dual swingout rear bumper, 1000Watt inverter, ARB fridge, and Simpson III tent everything is run off a second batter in the back with a smart charger and aux fuse panel.
