Exped DownMat 7 is the sh%t. Or, one of the Exped Synmats if you're worried about humidity. Comfier and warmer than the thermarest. Nice lightweight sleeping set-up either way!

thanks .. gonna take a look on that ..

Sorry, I haven't checked in for awhile.

D, isn't or wasn't there some sort of thread on the 80-series or am I thinking of the other silver one down there??
~Shane

Shane, I am not sure what you are asking. I do post a bit in the 80s tech. Is this what you are asking?

did you do a build on your rear cargo box? I made one last weekend, after fitment issue after fitment issue I gutted it.... and I am not happy with my results...

zrheard, I measured twice, cut once, after I made cardboard templates. Here is my drawer build thread:

Here's a pic from a few years back up in the Piute mountains in cal. I guess It was a hunting "expedition". Spent over a week back in those mountains. I just recently sold the trailer to a buddy and already regret it.

My FZJ 80 Pre-Build

Got this from a soccer mom last year after 6 months of searching. Doubt she ever used the lockers.
Goes into the shop next week for 2.5 inch lift. 33's and new front and rear bumpers, then RTT, and on and on and on....
Found this site last night and stayed up 'til 2 a.m. looking and reading.

i have a 94 with 2.5 kit and 33s, I think they look too small.

welcome to mud :flipoff2: I would give serious thought to 35s with a lift.
If you are set on 33s I would do a stock height kit, IF I ever buy another 80 I will go stock height and 33s. I dont feel like I really need the added height and it would make setting up my RTT much easier.

I'm not dead set on tire sizes, so thanks for your input.
Meeting with the shop owner this week to discuss what I want and why.

33's are fine to start with, and unless the situation calls for it, anything larger may become detrimental. Most exploration trucks rarely break the 35" line.

Nice 80!

Thanks. Think I'm gonna stick with the 2.5" lift
and the 33's.
Glad to hear it.
It's always a safe bet to start at a practical level, and work your way up.
Throwing the biggest tires you can find on your truck as soon as you get it is a "bro thing".
Tires are like shoes, keep using 'em until you outgrow 'em!

x2.
For typical modest trails (what you normally find on expedition type wheeling as opposed to rock crawling type trails) putting money towards dual batteries, a 12v fridge, sliders etc.a descent recovery gear kit, may yield better practical return on investment during your initial extended day camping / adventure trips. 33s Mud Terrain tire thread > ATs.

I would put that money somewhere else if you're not going to bump up tire sizes. 33s fit fine stock.

Here's my rig with 2.5" lift and 33's.

When I had 33's and no lift the rig looked kinda funny as if no articulation was possible.

I need to get a better pic of how the tent lowers the rear...

adding a rear cargo box helped bring the ass end down... but still sits well above the 33s

Ill check the desktop and see what new pics I have

Rallyroo and zrheard, thanks for the pics. Like 'em. Had to wait on the lift for a couple weeks but it goes in the shop on monday for the lift and tires. Just spoke to Greg at DiamondRax who has fabbed a rack for my CVT tent and thats on the way next week also. I'll post the pics when I get it back. Winch bumper next.

I like the other one with the two men better just because of the boy with a sling (and just noticed two other boys) staring at them. LOL!!

NCB, sharpen your gaydar gun skills! :hillbilly:

Anyway, I've posted this on another thread, but I've found this bracket that allows an aux light to be on, but was quickly pointed out that it would get ripped off by a friendly tree branch in a hurry.

Is that a real carbon fiber hood or a wrap.

Sorry retarded noob. the pic didnt come with the quote.

post #147 shows what lookes like a carbon fiber hood. I would like one just for some weight savings if nothing else.

These threads are really useful, so I thought I would run through some of the things I've done. I've had this car for a few years now, a 2001 HZJ105R Standard. She is built as a remote area tourer, but goes out sometimes for a 4x4 play weekend. These are affectionately known as the poverty pack, barn doors, and basic basic basic. They get almost no extras, 1HZ diesel, the weaker R151 gearbox, manual door locks, winding windows, no air bags on pre 2002 models. No glove box light, footwell lights, central locking, nothing! Some basics are good to have, the vinyl bench seat and vinyl floor mats are a joy when covered in mud or beach sand :)

Here she is at the dealer

Here she is out the back of Broken Hill in New South Wales.

Turns out she can't go "everywhere"…

I built a winch cradle for the alloy bullbar, it was on the car when I bought it so will have to stay until it eventually comes to a sticky end. When funds allow an ARB steel winch bar is the preferred option.

Basic interior with some mods…

Murdered the ashtray, promoted to a more important role…

Standard 16x6 0 offset split rims so I can fix them myself whilst away.

Engine bay - Safari turbo, dual batteries, ARB compressor for locker and tyres

Roof console, a bought item from "4wd Interiors" I think…

These models have an ugly fat rear end…

Inside a drawer system I built, when the back seat is folded down we can sleep in the back.

Get a good set of tire irons and a bead breaker, and you can change any tire on any rim yourself. I got rid of all the split rims we had here at the farm due to the danger of popping the removable part off when inflating. A high lift jack works nicely as a bead breaker, but for the farm I got a special bead breaking tool that is a special screw jack.

OUTBACK 4WD INTERIOR ACCESORIES
I'll have to look into those. For my 4runner, I've been wanting something to replace the obnoxious map lights out so they aren't so blinding. Looks like I'd maybe have to modify one, but it gives me ideas.

actually, it depends on the design of the split rim and the idiot working the wrenches.
the toyota splits have a 4 degree bevel so as long as you have the rim seated properly then the ring will seat tighter the more air applied
but
if a person is concerned, nervous, uncomfortable (or finds them ugly) then a one piece rim is for them.
