It's getting kinda crowded in the engine compartment

wow!

what other mods did you have to do besides the oil pan and oil filter relocation?
having worked on my om617 a bunch, seeing it under the hood of the 40 gives me chicken skin....

Well other than the lift to clear the oil pan during articulation and the adapters to fit the tranny, its all basic engine swap stuff. Working on the wiring now, should be able to start it up in a couple of days if all goes well.

In that last shot , you have the power steering reservoir there, are you going to use it as well?

It is hooked up to a Saginaw gearbox that the PO installed.

I had a setback today. Went to start the engine and had the worst noise ever come out of the engine. It sounded like a main bearing cap was laying in the pan and getting knocked around by the crankshaft. It actually sounded worse than that, kinda like nails on a chalkboard mixed with a bad car wreck.

Turns out that the starter is trying to reject the flywheel. When the engine try's to start it causes the starter to kickout and/or grind on the flywheel. I am using the starter from the Mercedes mated to the Chevrolet flywheel Both starters utilize the same number of teeth on the bendix but the MB starter must be a different pitch. Anybody have any ideas?

i would say," don't do that" ? :p:flipoff2:

can you use the starter that was orig with that flywheel or at least the pinion off it? i'd inspect your flywheel too if you think it chewed it up, bad sections will mess up whatever you put in even if it is correct... :frown:

That is sound advice but I am dying to hear that diesel rattle.

I think H&C can match up a bendix that will work with the chevy starter.

yeah i can imagine... sounds like a good next step.

:clap:I got to drive it today:bounce:
It runs better than the 250 six that was in it, and has a very nice powerband but is a little slow off the line.
I still have a lot to do. It has quite a bit of vibration at idle, which could be that my adapter is not truly centered. The vibration goes away right off of idle which may indicate a harmonic balance issue, either way it is annoying.

congrats! some good work there.

I'll get a video posted up on it as soon as I can get it smoothed out some.

I think I will try cleaning the injectors, readjusting the valves and mess with the rack dampener next. Hopefully that smooths it all out.

It is getting smoother, only rattles the park lights and the console now. I think everything else that could fall off already has.

I remember Pappy saying how to embed the video but I can't remember how too do it and can't find the thread while on my phone.

Put the Youtube blah blah blah between: {youtube}junk{/youtube} only replace the "{}" with "[]". I'll fix it if you don't get it the first time.

Example:

Replace "{}" with "[]".

Power? Mileage?

How is the overall power with the OM617? feel like it is enough ? how is hill climbing? after a while would be great to figure out what kind of mileage you get.
On another track, I'm sure you know that engine is one of the easiest to run vegie oil with, and even with the crowded engine bay, there would be some room to slide in the vegie oil conversion set up ( sorry for the pun) . Plenty of other threads on the subject....
