Of these two solutions for fitting minitruck disc brakes on the front of an FJ40 and retaining the stock LC tie rod & tire rod ends, which is better? Will the MAF bushings work just as well as the new arms at $30 versus $109? I am spring under with no intentions of SOA. Another option I have read about is people welding the hole shut and reaming to the correct size. What size/where do you buy the ream? Anyboby offer this service and if so how much? Downside if any? TIA

I bought the bushings from Classic Cruisers in Salida Colorado a couple of years ago. I think they were the first to offer them. They work great and probably less expensive than MAF.

Or you can buy them from the local auto parts store for $2.50 ;)

Borg Warner #SB1 or SB0 (can't remember which it is)

FJ40mayo,
What's the application? I can see the look on the sales drone's face now. Do you have the exact part number?

Chev starter bushing...

Butch posted this up over and over again on this and ppb...

Good luck!

FWIW, I hate to drag up an old thread but am going through this at the moment.

I first tried the starter bushings - repeatedly and could not get them in without crushing them.

I Manafre was out of bushings and had a few week lead time ($30 for a set).

I ended up getting a set from SOR for $5/ea. The bad news is that they DO NOT FIT!

The threads from the tie rod end do not even come up flush with the top of the nut when tightened.

What to do......

THe SBO bushings should be easy as pie to go in. I just did it last month. Fit perfect. Just light taps with a hammer and you are good.

i put mini truck disks on my 69 40 and used 79 steering arms and everything bolted up nice and clean also did the same thing on my 70 .but i had the arms dont know how hard they would be to get but with high steer being popular should be some around just an idea.i also have photos this time in case poser says i cant do that good luck

Take the steering arms and a TRE to any competent welding shop that does machine work as well, they can fill and re-taper them for say 50 bucks for the pair, no bushings, make it good for life, then you won't have to remember the bushing when you change TRE, cheers, Larry

Specter is taking the bushings back to see what is wrong with them. They seem to be doing right by me.... we shall see!

I am going to go spring over this winter - so whatever I do is just a temp fix.

I really did try the starter bushings - and I could not get them to fit! I used a vice and tapered them in the cone washer hole, then lubed them up and tried to press them into the TRE hole.

Each time they got about half way in and mushroomed on me!

Maybe using a hammer is the trick?

Mine did the same. Just when it would start to bind, I took a file and went around the outside of the bushing a few strokes. Dosen't take much material off that way. Al
