According to the Doug Demuro, the TRD Pro Sequoia is the new Land Cruiser, that's one of the reasons he replaced his 200 with one. Besides the power, he is going to be disappointed. :)

That's not Doug, that's what Toyota says. If you want a heavy duty LC in North America Toyota says you get the Sequoia.

Why would he be disappointed exactly? It really does seem the sequoia is the best modern option we have on the Toyota side.

I've owned a limited and a TRD Pro. Not that off-roady as one would think.

Land Cruisers articulate. They have decent off-road angles. They have a 112” wheelbase. The Sequoia lacks all these things. It’s great for what it is, but it isn’t a Land Cruiser.

So, with the 6G 4R press release is officially out now. Heres some take-aways from the press release.

... SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited grades will come standard with the i-FORCE powertrain....
...4Runner’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain is available on TRD Off-Road and Limited, while standard on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter and Platinum models.
...4Runner will be offered in 2WD, part-time 4WD or Full-time 4WD. 2... four-wheel-drive models have an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range...
....An electronic locking rear differential is standard on TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter grades....
...The Limited is offered with an available a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a center locking differential on i-FORCE MAX models, while this setup is standard on Platinum grades....

So my reading of this is the full time 4WD is only available on Limited and Platinum when paired with the iForce MAX, which i guess kind of makes sense so that they dont undercut the 1958 by offering full time 4WD with the non-Hybrid. Rear locker is only available with the part time 4WD, keeping the full-time 4WD with rear locker exclusive to the LC (and GX550 Overtrail)

...For example, second-row tumble seats help increase 4Runners interior versatility and maximizes cargo floor usage...

So it gets the same s***ty 2nd row seat folding solution as the LC that results in a non-flat cargo area.

I gotta say, they whacked that new 4Runner with the ugly stick. 5th gen looks far superior.

They doubled down on the Fu Manchu mustach from the Tundra. Not sure why that front piece needs to stick out so far. It would look much more clean without that extra bit in the front.

That’s a wide angle lens up close, which distorts perspective.

If those are correct - I'm not in love with the design. Looks like a truck they had to configure into an SUV on a budget to me. The design language doesn't work for me. I hope it's just a render and they did a better job in real life. The hood is too long. The windshield is too sloped and roughly 40% of the vehicle length is wasted by that ungainly front design. So the passenger compartment looks like it got smaller despite the longer wheelbase. Overall, to me, it sure looks like a big step back in design. Classic CALTY output. If this is real - I guess the LC250 has more chance of success than I thought it would.

According to that it shares the same 112" wheelbase and length overall as the LC250. This looks almost unusable: (So it must have a 3rd row?)

Maybe I'm the old man now yelling into the void. But it's hard to imagine a corporate officer signing off on going from this:

Aesthetics are subjective, but these proportions aren’t easy on my eyes. Long nose, slanted windshield, high, disjointed rear window. My wife says it looks like a mud hornet.

But I bet it’ll be an ultra plush ride on dirt.

My very crude re-proportioning that would look 100% better to me:

If Toyota had all the content and price of the 4Runner in the LC250 body - it would be a homerun.

It may mean the limited is also available as a 2wd model or AWD. That matches the prior model option choice. My guess is it will be 2wd or AWD or AWD hybrid in limited trim and platinum is AWD hybrid only.

I'm not sure why they have a sport, limited, and a platinum. How many pavement first trims do you need? Especially in a 4Runner when there's a Highlander.

I don’t have data to back this up, but I can guarantee you the sequoia has more articulation than a 100 series Land Cruiser

That would surprise me; but I’m happy to be surprised. The footage I’ve seen showed a tippy Sequoia with very little articulation.

so it is official now.
The only TNGA-F product to still use the 1GR-FE is the LC300.

The other TNGA-F product that still uses a naturally aspirated engine for selected markets and specs is the 250...can you guess what engine?

That looks like a great truck 👍🏿.

What's your feedback on it?

🫂
Here is some quick feedback
Pros:
  • very good power
  • 10spd (shifts smooth and fast)
  • 295/70r18 (34.5) tires easily fit
  • comfortable to drive on road
  • good tech
  • captain chairs
Cons:
  • poor articulation
  • not comfortable to drive off-road (suspension not working that great)
  • poor approach, break over, and departure angles
  • poor cargo volume for it's size
  • hood glare
  • in daylight, all the center console switches can't be read
  • fuel economy is about 20% lower than claimed
  • The hook for the jack is also used to lower the spare tire, which constantly slips out and binds when raising\lowering.
  • limited spare tire space. With an OEM wildpeak on the steel spare wheel, there is ~1/2" clearance between the panhard bar and tire.

Would it be the 2TR-FE?

sounds like an LC300 would hav been the perfect vehicle for you had it been offered in the US.
What about the GX 550 or LX 600?

I would love to have a GR Sport LC300.

I'll probably trade the Sequoia in for a 2025 GX550 or LC250
