Hello, I am attempting to replace my 1996 Cruiser steering wheel with a late model Toyota Sienna steering wheel with radio and bluetooth phone controls. Does anyone have any experience with this?

From what I have seen, Toyota uses the same radio wiring harness through the years and I have a 2003 Scion radio/cd that has several unused plugs in my 1996 80. From what I can see, other Toyota double din radios have these same plugs, including radios that have steering wheel controls like the Sienna mini-van. Toyota seems to use alot of items from other models between their products like the steering wheel in 80/LX450's is a leather wraped Camry steering wheel.

If the steering wheel fits, a wiring harness could be ordered from Toyota to plug it into the radio or a third party control box that transfers the signals to an aftermarket stereo that I've seen on ebay. Bluetooth can also be added the the right side of the Sienna steering wheel. (not installed on the pic below, just the blank is there)

The main caveat of this is weather or not the stock airbag can be reused. If it can, this could be relatively inexpensive.

However, as I encountered with my Audi multi-function steering wheel retrofit project, their are variences in the airbag it self. One is a single stage ignitor (2 wires) on pre-2005 models while the other is a dual stage ignitor (4 wires) on post 2005 models. I'm hoping Toyota did not change the airbags over the years ignition system or if they did, that they are still plug and play.

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated on this topic.

I am sourcing some parts right now to check fitment. However, it is somewhat cost prohibitive to just buy expensive airbags hoping that they will fit. Any of you who have a Sienna or other late model Toyota with steering wheel controls, colud you please post pics of the airbag, it's wiring harness & plugs as well as the plugs and harness of the radio/Bluetooth controls and the cruise control plug.

Pictured below is the Sienna steering wheel and a Landcruiser steering wheel.

Cool idea. Pls keep us posted.

doesnt work. the late models have a totally different mounting and airbag cover and shape. you would need the matching airbag and cover.

you need the wiring ring behind the wheel (yellow) which the 80 is not wired for- so the steering wheel controls won't work

the 80 steering wheel is common with only a few cars. I think the original LS400 was one of them but that's about it.

Interested how this turns out. What newer steering wheels can be used on the 80 in place of the stock one?

Ok then firsttoy, thanks. I need the airbag and cover but I'd need the cover anyway to match the new steering wheel. Now my next question is, are the late model airbag plugs compatible with the airbag plugs in the 80 series? If so, then a whole newer wheel may be able to plug right in. There have been some decent deals at pick and pulls for complete steering wheels. As for the ring, the plugs from the steering wheel controls should plug into a wiring harness that goes through the steering column so depending on the wheel this may not be an issue as it may be able to bypass this.

anything is possible. I mean, manned space flight in a rubbermaid is possible. lol

Once you have it apart, you will see it's not just plug n play or a little mod here and there. But it is just a steering wheel so you can make it work with enough determination.

Like the B7?

I don't know anything about wiring, but here is the measurement of the Sienna steering wheel that you were asking. It probably doesn't help too much as per FirstToy. Anyway, here it goes... (I have also emailed you a link with more pictures...)

The main issue if you retrofit is this: How would you know if the air bag will be deployed when you need it?

If it fits or not is not the point!

If the airbag plugs fit then it will work. Plus you can do a continuity test to confirm along with taking it to the dealer to have them check the airbag, as you are supposed to per the label on your sun visor.

Came upon this old thread. S.CarolinaFZJ80, were you able to get something working? There are these ugly aftermarket options (http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-Cdsr10...+wheel+buttons) but it would be really nice to find a OEM looking solution.

I saw that a Lexus car steering wheel would fit in another thread and I never got around to trying the Sienna wheel.

Can you explain? Lexus car steering wheel with more specifics? I am looking something like this with the paddle shifters too, don't rip it apart yet just wondering if / where you found what would fit? And does that include the clockspring?

I have found a used 2007 is350 column with the shifters and stereo controls etc and am thinking of buying it for a idea but wondering about fitment. Was "told" it would but I don't believe everything I hear.

thread revival since I'd like to get audio controls on my wheel. I think @rickashay did this with an is350 wheel and used the plus and minus for winch controls. he sold his very nice LX though so may not be active on this forum. he did put the wheel on his truck and he did seem to know what he was doing so I think there's a solution out there.

Anyone?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I would also like a newer wheel as well as one that could integrate the stereo controls with my kenwood.

just found @rickashay thread - he used a Lexus IS 300 wheel but it does not have audio controls. see: *Rickashay's 97' LX450* - "Tom Cruiser"

might be a better wheel, but I'd like audio controls as well. phone would be great too : )

I believe the Toyota Matrix/Corolla XRS is the same wheel as the IS300, with a Toyota emblem instead, for those not wanting Lexus badging on the wheel.
